I'm Scared To Go Into My Attic When Alone In The House - What Scares You?

I haven't a partner so I have to do anything that needs to be done. Last week I sorted out clothes that were too small for my son and need to get some 'too big bags' down from the attic. The only thing is I really don't like going up their on my own so I will have to wait until I have a visitor so that I can. I think it is more the danger factor of where the loft hatch is positioned rather than anything else, not sure but I always rush back down from there. Is there anywhere in your house you don't like going? Does anything scare you? Are there things that you can only do, for example watch a horror film, with other people around? Please share. Ellie :D

I'm not afraid of my attic simply because I've been there lots of times and we remodeled it. I can't say im afraid of anything at home but I work as a building attendant and at my job there is a huge attic and its really old. The building was built in the 1920's so its very creepy in there it looks like a ghost ship made out of wood. its missing some wooden boards so you have to watch your step and hardly any light in there. I cleaned it only once and won't do it again it is so scray in there and filthy. I even saw rats running around so i just got out of there as soon as possible.

Oh yes your work does sound a bit scary I think I would definately be very uncomfortable going up there. I am ok in attic conversions its just to get to mine I have to go through a small hatch which is above the stairs and that in itself is dangerous and then when I get up there, there is no light and I just want to get back down as quick as I can. I really do not like going into the basement. It seems like you and I both have the same problem. You probably have some electrical wiring up there and all of the currents surging through the wires gives you an uncomfortable feeling. I know that in our basement, our boxes and what not are down there and it gives me a strange feeling to be down there but I know why now.

Actually you have probably hit on something here as I get very agitated around electrical pylons if outside. They have a weird energy so that makes perfect sense and yes TV aerials etc are all up there. Thank you for sharing your thougts on this one, much appreciated. Ellie :D

I actually learned this by watching Ghost Hunters on TV. They refer to those type of situations a fear cage. Having a lot of electrical wiring around that constantly surges large amounts of currents can give people uneasy feelings like they're being watched and their hand stands up on end. Looking at it this way may help put your mind at ease. And, some people just happen to be more sensitive to these types of currents than others are.

Thanks for the information it does actually make complete sense to me and I am quite sensitive anyway so would probably be sensitive to these types of currents too eh! I haven't seen Ghost Hunter by my friend the late Bill Harrison used to run Ghost Watch weekends that were very interesting and in some buildings it was just electrical activity rather than anything else now you mention it. No I don't think it is your imagination as you don't experience it anywhere else just in this room at your friends house so you are definately picking up on something that makes you uneasy that is for sure. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie-as you know I live on my own too but am scared of heights as I broke my back from a 2 story high flat (long story) the attic is the one place I am frihtened to go into mainly as its too high and I find it too hard to clean the tiles in my bathroom as they reach the ceiling my son keeps saying he'll do them but never gets round too so I just have to leave them-my one big fear is heights of any kind-blessed be littleowl

Oh Littleowl I am sorry sorry to hear this I didn't realise. I knew you were frightened of heights from my hot air balloon discussion. How awful for you. I can imagine why you are frightened to go into the attic. Another option for the tiles though is to get one of those long window cleaning sticks and do it that way if your son never seems to get round to it eh! Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Its just a real uncomfortable feeling I get and also the fact it is positioned above the stairway the safety factor I suppose. I'll let you go up there then eh! Yes housework is a scary one but a necessity. Did you enjoy Prince Caspian with your grandaughter? Ellie :D

I never go the first weekend a film is out either for the same reason. Glad you enjoyed and no it is not one I have seen yet but it is half term from school this week so on my day off Friday I might take my son. The wedding was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed and as I was travelling against the traffic coming to the coast journey no problem. I managed to spend precious time too with my eldest daughter, she actually came with us in the end so perfect, thank you. See you done well bullying me into it eh! I really did want to go though. LOL. Ellie :D

Ellie.yes we both enjoyed it so much and liked it better than the first..such pretty scenes of Narnia..but of course since i read the whole book i kept thinking some things were different..and since Tori asked me questions i could let her know it was ok in some scenes. You have to see it if you haven't yet. Going next week to see Indiana movie..figured they all went this weekend and will be less people. How was the wedding? the drive? yourfamily? Glad you went and i bet it did you good!

One of my daughters always sleeps with a light on too so you are definately not alone there and many people of frightened of spiders. I love swimming but will only swim in a pool rather than the sea. Fear you will drive people away from you sounds like an insecurity or low self esteem so I would work on that one and try to accept people love you for you and by being you won't drive them away it will encourage acceptance. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and fears. Ellie :D

Well, for me, some of the things I do not like doing when my husband is not around, is take a shower. For some reason I just do not feel comfortable doing so. Maybe it is from fear from some of the Horror movies, etc. that I have watched over time, but then some of it is since I have other Health issues due to being Diabetic, etc. I am afraid that I might fall or something, and if I did no one would be able to help me if no one is home. And definately when it comes to watching Scary movies, and such, I have to have my husband home with me when I am watching these.

I am a big scaredy cat about alot of things. I will not go outside in the dark if someone else does not go out there with me. I am too scared that someone will be out there waiting for me. I work nights and I am home alone while my husband is also working nights away from home. We also have a crawl space under our house that we can access through our garage but I will not go under there at all because I am so afraid that a mouse or snake will cross my path while under there.

Oh I wouldn't like the idea of going into a crawl space either I would feel too claustrophobic. Just the thought of it makes me cringe. I am not frightened of the dark though and will go out if I have to. Thanks for sharing Steph. Ellie :D

I wouldnt go up into the loft in our house on my own!!..i would be really worried..but the thing is that our loft lid is quite small so anyone going up there doesnt have much room really...we dont keep a lot in the loft here..just a few odd bits n bobs...but if ever we need to go in there i always send hubby!!!!There are places that worry me..places that i would have to rush away from!!...I once had a real issue withpublic toilets...and I was petrified to lock the door..so i used to wedge my foot against the door and hope that no one pushed it!!lol....but that was a real fear....as for horror films..Oh no..dont even go there..because i cant watch them!!!

Oh, I see that you are absolutely afraid of going up into the attic. I see that you need someone to go with you to the attic to put clothes that were too small for your son. Right? My place does not have an attic. I wonder what scares you when you go up there. So you will have someone go with you.
@ellie333 (21016)

Hi Jakesnake, no I need to get clothes that I have been given that were too big down from the attic. The too small clothes will go to a charity shop. I go up there alone but I need someone in the house beneath the hatch as I worry about falling as it is at the top of the stairs and as there is no light up there it creeps me out a bit. Ellie:D

i think i'm scared to go anywhere that's dark and deserted. i feel ashamed of being scared so i try to face my fear, i think the cause of this is watching horror movies cause people in the past weren't so cowardly.

Nothing much. I guess.. I am used to be being alone at home, especially when family wants to go somewhere else. I prefer to be be left alone at home, I easily get tired of going out with the whole family. I even wake up in the middle of the night, walk around my house then sometimes go out to check and if some thing's not right. What usually scares me are the living, people and/or anything that I sees that can be a threat to me or my loved ones..

Yeah I don't like the dark so anywhere in my house scares me when it's dark! I will never watch a horror movie on my own, I need to have someone there with me and I'm usually scared for another one or two days after I watch it! I am a scaredy cat but I think that's OK. I wouldn't like going into the attic either if I were you! I don't have an attic but I know that they're often depicted as an area in the house that harbours a lot of mystery and secrets! (and dust).

To get to my attic you have to climb up through a small loft space that is almost above the stairs so it is the danger element too that worries me going up there alone. I'm a bit scaredy cat too but I don't mind like you and I will only watch horror if I have others here with me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Ellie :D

I too am scared to go up into the attic...it's more like a crawl space and the only one that has ever been up there is my daughter....her husband wouldn't even go up there! When she did go up....guess what she found? A turtle shell! Imagine..what the world was a turtle shell doing up there? Go figure. I also don't like scary movies. So they are not on my list of things to do!

Oh I am pleased to hear that I am not the only one. I will go up but I just like another adult in the house when I do. I think because the hatch is almost over the top of the stairs so it is the danger element if I did fall or something too. Ellie :D

hi ellie I will not go down the outside stairs here at our apartment complex as there are no railings on either side and I am deathly afraid I will fall. you see I had a bad fall two years ago that resulted in a badly smashed left shoulder. Ihad to have surgery and am now a bionic woman in a way with a plastic and steel shoulder joint. so if I were to 'fall now it would mean more surgery and the original one cost my insurance $86,000 dollars so not again ever.I have never fully recovered the use of my left arm so am afraid of steps without railings.
@ellie333 (21016)
26 May 08
Oh Hatley I can so understand why you won't go down those steps. Boinic eh! Must have been a terrible experience for you. I think that is why I don't like going up into the attic as the hatch is over the top of the stairs so if I did fall it would be a very long way day so I always feeler safer going when someone is around. Is there anyway that railings can put put along these stairs for you? I would definately try to sort something. Thanks for sharing your story. Ellie :D

Im very brave! I just hate spiders so I cant even look in the attic incase they fall down the hatch!!!! that is scarry? I can watch horror films, I know they are not real, but spiders no way?
@ellie333 (21016)
26 May 08
Oh I am very brave with spiders they really don't bother me but I do know that some people are terrified of them. So no point in inviting you round to go in the attic then as you wouldn't go in case there was a spider LOL. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

This is going to sound utterly ridiculous, but I am absolutely TERRIFIED of moths. I generally dislike all bugs, but for some reason moths fly at me and I panic and run, or cry. Moths are so harmless! I don't know what the reason behind my silly fear is.

Moths are attracted to the light so you must be a lovely person but I can understand it as I would hate something to be flying at me even if they are harmless. A bit like some people who are terrified of spiders eh! Thank you for sharing. Ellie :D
