How old were you when you got your first pet?

I was seventeen when we got our two cats. I had always wanted a pet, but whenever I asked for one, the answer was no. Finally, my parents saw these two kittens that had been abandoned, and brought them home. They have brought so much joy to us. I can barely remember a time when we didn’t have them. They were so small when we got them, about ten months ago, but they are so big now! I don't mean fat, just tall.

Me and Babette...Two Years After We Got Her - image of me and Babette, my first cat
I had my very first cat when I was a mere 5 years old. My mother grew up in a pet type family, but mainly dogs. I think she got the kitten for me since I was an only child and she thought I might like a pet companion...so a little before Christmas, she went to a shelter and picked out a black and white kitten, and named her Babette...here is a photo of me, believe it or not...this was taken a few years after getting Babette

Oh my heavens. I don't remember a time when we didn't have pets. My mother loved animals. We owned everything you can imagine at one point or another in my life. From cats and dogs to horses and quail. We literally owned almost everything under the sun while I was growing up.

We always had pets when I was growing up but none of them were actually mine to take care of until I was about 9 years old. I got me a couple of hamsters to love and to care for. My hamsters used to let me love on them for a little while and then they turned mean and wanted to bite. We have one now and he is very sweet and loving, especially if he is sleepy.

Dad wouldn't allow hamsters or other small rodents in our house but he did allow mom to get us a puppy in 1962.

I think being on a farm we always had cats and dogs and other animals. The first pet that i had that was MY pet was a springer spaniel named Rejess. I was 2 years old when my great uncle ron gave her to me. She was my best friend at that time and She went everywhere with me. We have all sorts of photos with me and my dog. By the time i was three my puppy and i would go play outside in the yard and we'd wander off and she always made sure i got back to the house safe...or if i did something like oh fall down an old dried up well she'd sit and wait by the spot and bark til my mom found us. We were kind of sneaky and escaped moms view. We'd even go catch snakes together...She'd catch them and I'd play with them.

You were lucky. We moved around so much when I was little so we didn't get a dog until I was about 12 or so. Now I can't imagine life without a dog.

I was 6, I think. My mom brought home two baby budgies for me. They were mine to take care of and feed and clean their cages. They both ended up dying. One because it got old and the other because it flew into a window trying to escape. :( Almost a year after we got them, too. I haven't had any pets since.

i was 5 when i got turtles, but they always got killed by birds of prey. then i had fish at age 6 until 13. but at 10 i got a rabbit and and a rabbit at age 11. and a cat at age 12 then another cat at age 16 and it goes on and on. not too many pets but deeply attached and they all had bad endings. so i worry about mavis my cat now.

I was 3 years old when i got my first pet, it was a rabbit. My dad and i went to the pet store to buy dog chow. When we were leaving i started screaming "I want a rabee"!!(rabbit) at the top of my lungs. My dad said every one in the pet store was looking at him so he had no other choice but to buy it. To this day he still tells me that story. He says i was nothing but a spoiled brat.

I don't know exactly how old I was, but I was very, very very young. We bought a rabbit and a guinea pig, Pepsi and Cola. I also had a dog for a short while around that same time, I think it may have been my first pet and Pepsi and Cola were my parents attempt at mending my broken heart. I've always had pets though. I've had rabbits, a guinea pig, rats, hamsters, fish and a cockatiel. At the moment I just have one dog and one hamster.

I was either 5 or 6 yrs old when I got my first pet. He was a cocker spaniel and his name was Rocky. I remember I use to sit on his back and ride him like a horse!

well, I got my first dog i think when i was around 8? maybe but our landlord said we couldn't keep him so we gave him to this old lady down the road so then i got a pet rat from my teacher lol.. and i've had a few others but my parents would do the actually "taking care of them" work.. all i did was play with them and love them.. so what i count as my "first pet" is the dog i have now. because i do everything and pay for everything when it comes to him but it took me about 8 years to get him because my parents would always so no but in 06 they said yes! best xmas gift ever!

As far as I know, my parents had a dog when I was born. We've always had a pet (or 12) in one form or another; fish, lizards, birds, dogs, rats, mice, hamsters, giant African snails, more fish... lots of fish, rabbits, guinea pigs, stick insects. It's only been in the last couple of years that I've not had pets... stupid landlords; what are they afraid a fish is going to do their property? Oh well, now I have a boyfriend... that's close enough for now. And he's far more likely to course damage than any fish, rodent or big ol' bloodhound. Although technically I have goldfish, but they're so big and so old I can't take them form my dad's house; they'd die en route. Bob is nearing 17 I think. He's practically pure white now and almost as long as my forearm, from mouth to tail. Wat, Roland and William are only 6, but even Wat, the smallest, is as big as my hand.
