I Want Money.

Ok I know there are a few discussions about the rebate checks but I havent found my answer yet. Ok the back story here. I got a good refund this year but found out we made a mistake so we had to file an amendment......and now I owe money I havent received a bill yet but i applied for a payment plan. Now I just got my letter saying I can expect my check soon so will I actually be getting it? I know they will take for back taxes but why did I get a letter than? Im thinking it may be because I filed an amendment so they could just go based off my original filing?

I have not read anything about if you owe you won't get the check. But don't forget, this rebate you get now, is only a "loan" based on any refund you get NEXT year. If you get $600 check this summer, and next year - you have to deduct that $600 from any refund you get. No effect if you owe, just if you get a refund. Govt is just allowing you to borrow from yourself. So it might not effect your owing this year.

Yes it is very true I did a discussion on it while back. Buried in the "terms" of the Stimulus Rebate says - this rebate will be deducted from any refund you get for 2008 tax filing year. The IRS even is in the process of re-printing 1040's for the tax year 2008 to include a line at the bottom that once you do all the math and have your refund amount, the next line says "Stimulous Rebate check for 2007" and you have to enter how much you get with this check and then deduct that fro the refund amount, and that is what you will get next year. If you owe, it won't effect you. If after the deduction and you have a negative, you don't have to pay anything. It is simply a loan to yourself from money you will get next year. Oh yes, it is very true. I did the research!

i really don't know how it works but i guess if there was an error & you filed an amendment, you won't be getting any money back. but that's just me. who knows?

if it is like our system here in quebec, it is because the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. They will send you the check then ask it back for what you owe.

Its possible your amended return did not get to the correct department before your rebate (stimulus) check was in the computer. My friend owed taxes and what she owed was deducted from her stimulus check and she got the difference.

I'm not sure, what will happen to you. I know if you owe them money they will get it anyway they can. If you get some kind of payment they will take that from you. I thought that everybody got a rebate check, if you filed taxes this year. I don't know either, sorry I couldn't be of help to you...Good luck

I would think they would send you the rebate check and then send you a bill for what you owe. I believe the rebate and the taxes are separate entities. I haven't gotten mine yet either and I signed up to have it direct deposited. I am getting worried. I thought all the direct deposit ones were supposed to be out already. Maybe they are mailing it instead.

It would be nice to get but if not at least my taxes will be paid. If you had a tax place do your taxes and your fee was taken out of your return then you will get a check mailed.

I'm not sure Minnie. This reminds me of a mistake I made on my taxes when I was young and just starting out. I thought I could file my own taxes, no problem. I could save some money by doing it myself. Well the first year, no problem. I got a nice little refund and went on my way. The next year I get a letter saying I had made a mistake and I actually owed them money. So I get on the phone and call the IRS and they tell me what I did wrong. So, like an idiot, I say "well I filed it the same way last year and I got a big refund". Dumb move. The agent says "oh really, let me check". By then I realized I had screwed up but what could I do. I toyed with the thought of hanging up but its not like they didn't know who I was. She comes back and says yes you did do the same thing last year but we didn't catch it. Then she tells me I owe all that back too plus interest. I found out quick that the IRS isn't patient either.

We filed our taxes and had them electronically done. We had to go back and file an ammended return also. We got our first refund and then had to mail in the ammended return and wait for it also. We finally got our tax return from the ammended return and a few days later we got a letter saying how much we would get for our stimulous check. We got the whole amount. They may have based it from your original filing. I know the I.R.S. made alot of mistakes recently with the checks also.

Yeap that sounds like the government to me, give with the right hand then take it away with the left. Thst's unfortunate right now especially with the baby coming. I know all to well what it's like. It sucks big time.

I know I owe on my student loan and they haven't taken away for it at all. I don't know exactly the deal but that is what I encountered. And if you get the letter, then more than likely, you'll get a check soon. I remember in 2001, I got a letter stating I would be receiving that same rebate money, but never got it. Come to find out, It went to a bill I had. so that's how that went.

That sounds complicated. I would assume the worst and be pleasently surprised if you are wrong. Seems safer than the other way around.

Even the I.R.S. makes mistakes. Don't worry. If you owe them money, you can bet your boots that they'll come looking for it. If you do get a rebate check, I think you should just put it in the bank (savings account) and hold on to it for a bit, just to be sure. But from experience, I know that they will come after any money owed to them, even if it is a penny. (I used to be self-employed and had to pay my own taxes.)

They probably have to wade through all the papers and amounts and it all takes time to do the detective work. I would think there woould a number you can call. Go to: www.irs.gov and check it out. Good luck to you!
