Red Cross Disaster Fund has been depleted

The Red Cross has depleted all of its funds for disaster relief. I'm shocked. I'm also shocked at myself to think that they have a "never-ending" supply of money and help for all of us that need it. They have responded to 30 plus disasters in the last couple of months and are now totally without funds to help. They are taking out loans to get more money and increasing their fund-raising efforts. That doesn't sound good. Read all about it here. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/16/AR2008061601734.html?wpisrc=newsletter

IT isn't surprising that the Red Cross Disaster Relief fund is depleted with as many disaster that we have had alone in the United States, but I'm surprised that they let it get this low before deciding to increase their fund raising efforts.

sadly, this doesnt really suprise me just because of all the world disasters that have been happening of late and perhaps with all the prices going up too, people are less willing to give to charities...

Boy that is shocking. I would never have thought that the Red Cross would run out of money. But with all the disasters that we have been having it isn't really surprising. All the tornadoes and floods the last couple of years has been keeping them real busy. Donation have got to be down too withe rising cost of gas and groceries. The food banks are suffering too.

It doesn't surprise me, although it is sad. What is worse is people don't have the money that they used to to help. I think we are going to see alot more agencies struggling.

With all the flooding and recent tornados, it really doesn't surprise me that the Red Cross has reached bottom in it's funds. It makes me feel really bad now because, up till this past March, I was a regular donor of $30 a month. I had to stop because that 30bucks filled my gas tank so I could work for 3 days. I've been forced to cut back on not only 'luxuries' but nessicites as well to put food on the table and into my furbabies bowls.

It is crazy that we try and help people everywhere around the world and spend billions on a war but when people in the central US need help we have nothing in the kitty for them. I am not saying we shouldn't help when we cam but when US citizens aren't getting the help they need it just seems wrong. I also wish so much of the money people actually gave to charities wouldn't be spent on things other than helping the people who need it. I know there are expenses but I think it is amazing the total amount people give versus what actually goes to help.

I am sure people are not donating much and are probably not well off enough to take care of themselves. I knew a lot people that the Red Cross helped out after hurricane Katrina. Many of those people owned $300K homes and not a lick of flood insurance!

Yes, this is a very disastrous year. I will remind everyone to give blood as well. We miss the blood drives in town frequently, but as we drive to and from Oklahoma we almost always take time to stop in Wichita and donate. It is free to us, and can save a life. Thanks for posting this. EVERYONE: give what you can, when and where you can. You never know when you will be on the receiving end.

That is a little scary. Of course with so many charity and helping organizations it is hard for people to decide what to contribute to. I really hate to see them have to borrow money to help us. Then again I hate to see our federal government borrowing two billion dollars a month from China.

I wouldn't have thought about it either - although I know that they must be spending a lot of money helping all of the disaster victims. They often help servicemen when they need to come home for family emergencies as well. Even if you can only do a little, please contribute to the American Red Cross. We never know when we might need their assistance!

This is not good news since you can imagine what it feels to be involved in a disaster and not expect anyone to come to your rescue.

I didn't know that the Red Cross was in such bad shape. I'm going to spread the word to all of my online and real life friends about this because the Red Cross is one of the best when it comes to disaster assistance. Whether it's a house fire involving one family or something larger involving hundreds and thousands of people, the Red Cross is there. I've seen them in action after a hurricane comes through here in Florida and they are quick to get in and get set up to help people.
