Ever lost a library book?

We had checked out a library book for my son, and on the day it was due we could not find it anywhere. The librarian renewed it for me to give us more time to find it, but we never did. Reluctanly I decided to just pay for it. I know I could have bought the book on Amazon used for $4.00 including shipping. The library charged me full price which was $9.99 plus a $10.00 re-order fee. Have you ever had to pay for a library book that was lost? If so how much does your library charge?

I'm embarassed to say we hardly ever go to the library. We usually buy all of our books. I guess we're not very frugal! I don't think I've ever had to pay for a library book, so I'm not even sure how much they charge. I guess we should start using the library more often to save some money!

You can get movies there too, and some libraries even have video games.

I've recently lost a library book from the library in my school and the librarian kind of questioned my character that really got me mad and I was ready to tell her who dioes she think she is questioning that I had misplaced a book and I had Happily paid for the fee so why is she getting mad. Books don't cost to much these days. My English teacher made one of the students pay 60 dollars for losing a book and I think that is absurd, we could have found that book in the damn garbage can and I think that she was being very unreasonable

I think the librarian's response is understandable. It doesn't matter if books are cheap or not, you misplaced property that did not belong to you. If someone borrowed something of yours and then lost it, wouldn't you expect them to replace it or compensate you?

I have not yet lost a book before but I always return books late. I always forgot the dateline and end up returning late. In my country, we need to pay a fine if we return books late. I owe the library $2 and have not yet returned. I'm lazy to travel all the way to return 2 bucks. Now, I do not go library. If I need any reading materials, I'll try to find from the Internet first and usually I can find a lot of information.

I've never lost a book, but I did drop one in a puddle and have to pay for it. They charged $10 for it - they have a set fee for all their books. So much for a paperback, so much for a hardcover etc. It's a good thing that I read the book before I dropped it or I would have been annoyed to pay for a book that I hadn't even read!

It is good that you read it. $10.00 isn't too bad.

Oh gosh I had to do that with one of my daughters books. But they gave us the option of buying it ourselves or paying them for it. I opted to buy it myself. I knew it was Sams club. They told me not only I had to buy the same book we lost we had to buy one of the new books out. When I went to Sam's I found 2 books and got them for less than 5.00s so we lucked out and the Library never new the difference of the price of the books.

I once have lost a Library book which costs about $15 and I have to pay that amount to the Library in order to re order the book. I thought of buying a new book and return it to the library instead of re order the book. I bought another book for a very less amount which is in good condition and returned it to the Library as a replacement. Later I found the original book and I kept it for myself.

My library won't allow that, they have to get the book, and charge you extra for it.

We lost one once and the librarian renewed it for a year for us. The day before I planned to pay for it as were moving, I found the book. It was in my daughters' toybox- the one place I thought that I had looked. I was thankful that we hadn't paid for it and that she was understanding with us.

I remember losing a library book that my son checked out. The library also renewed it to give us more time to find. We couldn't find it by the time it was due back the second time. When I was getting ready to pay for it, my son thankfully found it. I can't remember how much they were going to charge me.

Luckily enough, not yet (knock on wood). We sometimes have a hard time finding a book because the kids put it into their own bookshelves, toy boxes, fell behind the bed, couch, you name it. We also encountered it at least six times already (twice the public, four times the university library when we were still students) that the library claimed we had not returned the book when in fact we had. The person scanning the books back in simply skipped one and it went back on the library bookshelves without moving into the 'returned' status. We had to go find it in the library and 'return' it, lol. Always an option worth checking before one pays up. And yes, they always charge full retail price and then some including re-order fees and fines. I can't tell you how scared I got, when the university library claimed for the first time that my husband had 'lost' a scientific book of theirs valued at about $250. They wanted over $350 to replace it. My husband was sure he returned it on time with about twenty other books he had used to write a paper. After taking our appartment apart and car apart, he went to check the library shelves. Law and behold, the book was already back on the shelves! They all have a unique code and are easily identifiable, even if the library has 100 issues of the same book;)

No I have never lost a library book. I have been entitled to pay fines but never lost any book. Whenever I borrow a book from the library, I try to be very careful with that book because I know that the book does not belong to me. And after all a book is very previous, it's a source of discovery and knowledge :)

I stole a library book once. As in deliberately kept it out. For a very long time. Anyway, I worked for a library for awhile, and having done so, I find their policy to be very understandable. You lost their property, after all. :-P

I used to be really good at returning books on time. But lately I've gotten really bad at it. In July, I decided to pay off all my library fines to the tune of $80.00 so I can now borrow books again. I resolve not to have an even late library book much less a lost one for the next year. It was embarrassing. I couldn't even look my librarian in the face when I saw her in the grocery store.

Many years ago, I did have to pay for a book that was lost. They charged me a restocking fee and the price of the book, so it was really a costly book. I could have purchased a bag of only read once books for the amount paid for just one book. I offered to buy them a new book, as could have given them several books, but they turned down the offer. I don't remember the exact amount paid, but it was a lot.

sometimes the library accuses me of not returning stuff and this happened to me twice. i had borrowed a huge coffee table style book and returned it, the library called, i said i had returned it, she looked on the shelf and found it! i was told i lost a book, ended up paying for and guess what, they found it...i got my money back!

When I was younger, it always started as an overdue book until I lost the book. I think I had 3 episodes for it. So, not only did I pay for the book, I had to pay the overdue price for it too. Sometimes, the librarian would even let us look for the book. If we really cannot find it, that is the only time she lets us pay the who;e amount on top of the overdue price. I think the library got a lot of money from me all those years. LOL!

Yes - it was The Hobbit. We still have not found the darn book either and it has been almost a year since we lost it. And what is worse is that I think I am the one that really ended up losing it not my kid. My son had asked me to look at the book to help give him some ideas for his book report and then all of sudden we couldn't find it. What is equally embarrassing is that I sometimes work at the Library. Ended up paying $12.00 for the darn book. I still hope to find it one day.
