I have Man something or other and having been up almost the whole night feeling progressively more poorly I have taken to my bed. I am bored rigid, but I know that I really don't want to be up and downstairs. I have slept, read the newspapers and am now using my daughter's laptop to see what's happening on here. What do you do to entertain yourself when ill in bed?

As a woman, I don't have time to be ill and certainly not to stay in bed!:P The odd time I have had to do so, I have a collection of puzzle books to keep me occupied although I have my two children who have a habit of following me and keeping me company if I'm in bed when I "shouldn't" be. Now we've moved, our bathroom is downstairs so any kind of yucky illness will probably mean not being able to go to bed anyway. Maybe I would have to live in the bathroom or something.:) What was the question again? Oh that was it. I have puzzle books. I hate it when I run out. My current favourite puzzle is Hanjie. That's the one where you make pictures with numbers using logic and whathaveyou. I got into Sudoku for a while ages ago but I got bored with that. We also have lots of books and things and, if I'm up to it, I will use some poorly time to do a bit on my course. I must get on with that.

Did you notice that Sudoku is an anagram of Sod u uk?

No. Women aren't allowed to be ill in bed. It's much better for you to keep going!! Puzzle books would have been good yesterday but not sudoku. Although I have tried and it has been explained to me a hundred times, I just cannot work out how to do a sudoku puzzle! I'm much better today so have emerged from my bed and come downstairs.

Aww hon, I hate to hear you are feeling poorly. I read and watch old movies while confined to the bed. I have a lap top but I do not like to use it in the bedroom. My husband thinks the TV is a distraction enough. LMAO.. Sugar I hope you get to feeling better... We could send Mo your way. She could tuck you in after a few other of us Girls have had our way with you in your defenseless state.

Thanks Mummymo. It's a tummy problem that I've had before several times. If I just rest it clears up. But this is being a particularly tough bout. You cheer me up too. XX

Sorry to hear you have man something or other, it does not sound as though it is very nice. Well, I have never been ill in bed, I am now touching wood in case I have jinxed myself and end up really sick. But I am one of those that fights an illness all the way, I rarely get a full blown cold or sickness bug, I only ever get it a little bit of it and then it goes. I just do not get the time to be ill, if I am ill then the whole of my house would fall apart! I hope that you get better soon xx

Thank you Gemini. You have the advantage of being female and as we know we men are on the wimpy when it comes to illness! Mostly I am very tired as I was unwell last night with stomach cramps - you don't ned to know more but you can imagine I'm sure. I shall be fine tomorrow Thank you again.

I had a real earache earlier in the week. Maybe that and my current problem are related.

Hmm yes being married to a male who makes a mountain out of a molehill over a sneeze, yes I do have to agree to the term wimpy. Saying that though if you have a bug then you are quite entitled too, there are some nasty bugs about just now and a friend of mines son had it last week. My daughter has also had a touch of it and a nasty ear infection. It will all be down to this orrible weather we are having.

I would probably do the same as you. If you want to waste a lot of time, go and join a site called Winster, it will keep you busy for a while playing games, it is very addictive. Don't go in it win though it is very hard and takes a long time to win, but if you play with other people it is a real blast.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I find those game sites either completely addictive or super boring. I shall have a look at Winster. Thank you.

I lie down on the living room couch, pull a cover of myself, and get my husband to put one of my dvds on and I will watch the entire show. I do not have a laptop, but if I did I would write on my novel, but since in order for me to write, I have to be sitting up in the computer room, I will be watching tv. I also will nap more or less, so even if my favorite show is on Tv or I am supposed to be watching the Dvds, I am too tired, so will probably miss most of it.

I am glad you are feeling better. I doubt that I would be much help if I had a laptop. I doubt that you would want to hear me complaining about how miserable I felt. At least I got a chance to catch up on watching my Dvds. You know the only time I do watch a Tv series on DVd is either when I am sick, or when my husband is not feeling well and then I have to put them in for him.

The important thing is to be comfy I think. I used the laptop but didn't have the energy to do more than come on here. I'm batter now thank goodness.

Gosh Littleowl. I went to bed 15 minutes after you but I did feel very unwell. My daughter sleeps with her iPod and laptop sometimes. When I go in there some days it looks like a hospital scene with all the wires etc coming out of the bed. Hope that all is well and that you aren't worrying about anything that's causing you to stay up so late.
19 Jul 08
If Im ill I normally get a duvet and stay on the couch as I can watch tv and make myself drinks and such. I feel closed in when Im upstairs, downstairs seems more open and spacious. Also the computer is downstairs so if I feel upto it I will sneak on to see what is happening. Hope you get better soon from that man thing you have!!

I do too. But we have a houseful and it is better for me to be elsewhere. Plus, it's too noisy for me down there. I like silence. Thanks. I'm sure that I shall be up and about tomorrow.

Could answer that but im not going to,whats been the matter with you then?and you better now?bet it was that asian flu, been a bu*** that has.Get yer wife to rub some goose grease on your chest, and stick your head over a bowl of steaming water too.Have you got your own thermometer?oor even better have you got your own nurse?

Tummy problems Ella. I'll survive. Have done in fact as I am up and about again. I don't know why but I read your comment as "stick your head down the toilet"!! Must be my eyes too. LOL. My wife was a nurse, but saw the light and decided to get out. So in a manner of speaking I do have my own nurse. No sympathy there (he lied)!!

When you're feeling ill, the best thing is plenty of rest and fluids (mostly water, juices are mostly empty sugar calories). That's boring usual advice, so I'll give you some advice you won't normally hear. According to some studies, humans should consume about 50 mg/kg of body mass in Vitamin C. I'm 215 lbs (97.5 kg), and that comes to roughly 5000 mg of Vitamin C per day for me. The average male is 150 lbs (68 kg), and that means about 3000 - 3500 mg per day. Based on the same studies, that's the amount you should consume when healthy and not subjected to stress. When ill, you should boost your intake. When I'm sick I tend to take 1000 mg every hour I'm awake, popping it like candy. I barely ever get sick (it's been really about 10 years since I've had even but the sniffles), and whenever I do feel like I've allowed myself to become sleep deprived, or if I'm under more stress than usual, or if I'm experiencing the beginning of the sniffles or other feeling of dis-ease, I start popping Vitamin C at much higher rates, and then what I'm feeling never ends up progressing, and rapidly improves. I do the same when I've hurt myself, and since Vitamin C is important for the production collagen, it helps in accelerating the healing process of those cuts, scrapes, and bruises. It's important to remember that virtually all animals produce their own vitamin C, and, generally, we can project that 50 mg/kg to all of them, although they produce sometimes ten or more times more when they're ill or under stress. Humans, other primates, some species of fruit bats, and guinea pigs are the only creatures without the ability to synthesize it, and so we need it from diet. During the course of evolution, losing the ability to make our own was advantageous, because our monkey-like ancestors were much smaller creatures and could get all they needed from their high fruit diets, and so they didn't need to waste precious glucose and energy to produce vitamin C. So we need to compensate, as best we can, by making conscious choices, like proper nutrition, and, in some cases, supplementation, especially when ill. Incidentally, there have been successes in improving immune function in people with HIV when they ingested as much as 100 grams (100,000 mg) per day of Vitamin C, although that quantity consumed by you or me would lead to digestive discomfort and diarrhea. A good general rule of thumb devised by Linus Pauling, the only person ever to win two Nobel Prizes on his own, is to ingest Vitamin C up to your bowel tolerance. In other words, take as much as you can before you would feel bowel discomfort. You will find that, the sicker or more stressed you are, your bowel tolerance for Vitamin C will increase in direct proportion. This explains how someone with a severe immune disease like HIV can cram 100 grams throughout the day without being stuck on the toilet all the time. Anyway, thought I would share that. Best way to entertain yourself is to get out of bed sooner. But while you're there, I'd suggest a good book, or mindless TV. It's less than healthy, but if I get really bored, all I want to do is knock myself out. To that end, I might take sleeping pills if I have any around, or some "PM" OTC medicine, or anti-histamine like benedryl, or even have a couple of shots of whiskey. After all, why be awake when you're body is healing, if you don't have to be?

Wow that's a most comprehensive reply and makes for interesting reading. My Dad is a Vitamin C obsessive. Except he has diabetes now and that has messed up his daily intake a little. I'm actually up and about now and have just come in from clearing stuff in the garden. But I am impressed. Welcome to myLot and please accept the Best Response

Well, sorry that you are having a day in bed because your ill or were ill. What do I like to do when I am stuck in bed ill? Well, if I am not to ill I would enjoy a good book. I would seriously love a laptop computer to play around with but that is not gonna happen anytime soon. I do however play a few games on the trac phone my mom gave me since it couldn't get service were we live so I di use it for the games and the alarm. Other then that I guess I would suffer..unless I got a deck of cards and played a few games of solitaire.

I'm up and about again now thanks. The laptop relieved much of the boredom and was a fair swap. My daughter came onto my computer which is bigger and faster etc, and I used her laptop which is just the right size for using in bed. So we were actually both very happy with that arrangement.

Well, as I'm a Mum, a big sister and a houseperson, I'm not allowed to be ill! If I am too poorly to do anything, I have to sleep as if I'm not asleep, I'm asked to do stuff..........'Mum, will you help me with this.............'Dory' will you do this' etc etc.

I sleep, then I read a magazine, then I sleep some more, then I put in a movie to watch and fall asleep during it! Sleep is what I need when I am ill. Sometimes I will call my mom and moan and groan on the phone to mommy!! And I'm 48, how sad, but she loves it. It's the feeling needy part.
