Nose Bleeds and All That Fun Stuff

One of the side effects of a medication I am on is occasional nose bleeds. It has happened more often now because of the weather. It is allergy season, so it makes it even more likely for me to have a nose bleed. I don't really like them, big surprise! The last one I had took 20 minutes to quit. I've heard after a while, like 30 minutes if it hasn't stopped, a person should seek help. I don't know if that is true. I know you shouldn't lean your head back. We were told to do that when we were kids, but then later all the medical professionals discouraged that. So, when was your last nose bleed, have you had one, how did you get it, and what did you do to stop it?

I always lean my head back. If I didn't, it would not stop. It sounds like the medical professionals who are telling you not to lean your head back know that it will not stop if you don't and then after 30 minute you go see them, and they get paid. After about 20 minutes, it stops. My last nose bleed was a couple of months ago. Many times it happens when I get in the shower or when I get out. Why I don't know. When I was a little girl, my uncle said to roll up a match book cover and put it under your nose. I don't remember if it helped.

No, they wouldn't benefit from my nose bleed not stopping. They worked in a physician facilty, not equipped with an ER. The ER would make money from me, not those people. They aren't in the same network. Besides I didn't take their word on it. I looked it up and watched a couple videos about it on the web. I can't believe they actually had that stuff on the web. I guess if we looked we could find just about anything. And with so many different people saying different things, I say just do what ya got to do. But don't blow your nose during a nose bleed. Yuck, I've seen people do that.

Hi there, I am sorry that your medication is doing this to you. I am sure that you may have already asked your Doctor for another type without this side effect! I have heard Never tilt your head back! Only lean forwrd. I am very thankful that I can not remember the last time that I had a nose-bleed or any of the details. Sorry not more helpful. But, I feel really bad that you are going through this.

Hi, Pam. I do not remember my last nose bleed. On the other hand my husband and his sister get them so badly that a school nurse he had for only a year and a half, over thirty five years ago, remembered him because of them. He has had the capilllaries cauterized years ago. Good news, here is what helps: Take a vitamin C supplement, and take it consistently. Although C is a blood thinner, it also strengthens the walls of the capillaries, so that they are less fragile. The second is an instruction from our current doctor. He told Bob that when he finds that he is getting nosebleeds frequently, he should get the OTC saline nasal spray, and use it up to ten times a day to moisten, and lubricate the lining of his nose. It also washes away any allergens that might irritate it. These two simple things have done wonders for hubby. I hope this could help you as well.

Yes, I actually do both of those things. I really thought the nasal thing would work for me since it had worked in the past. I guess it works for the allergy part, but not the side effect from the medication. Thanks for the advice. : )

I haven't had a nose bleed in a very long time. I actually cannot remember when was the last time that I had one. I know how to get them to stop though. I cover my nose with a tissue or a wash cloth and tilt my head back to make the bleeding stop. I know alot of people say not to do that because it causes clots. I say to do whatever it takes to stop the bleeding and deal with the consequences later if you have no other knowledge of how to get it to stop another way.

Actually, the reason I got for not tilting the head back was because it could make a person choke on their blood. Sounds weird, but when I thought about it, it is true when I used to tilt my head back, the blood would gather at the back of my throat and I would have trouble swallowing. I don't lean my head back, and I still get so many clots. Oh nasty, I'm going to gross you out...

I have not had a nosebleed in years. My daughter gets them alot from her allergies. We just get a cold wet washcloth anad hold it on her nose until it stops. I don't think they have ever lasted 20 mintues though that would scare me as you are losing blood. You are not suppose to lean your head back when you have a nosebleed as it can run down your throat and choke you if there is a clot you are suppose to hold your heard forward.

Exactly. But I still see parents with little kids telling them to lean their head back when they have a nose bleed.

Yes it is true, if a nosebleed does not stop after 30 minutes, and its heavy and going down the throat then you should seek help. This is because they can be covering a more serious underlying illness and also because the bleeding is higher up in the nose and so will need doctors help to stop it. I have never had a nose bleed, but my son gets them often through blowing his nose a lot with having hayfever. To stop it he sits up straight and pinches his nostrils together firmly for ten minutes. He does this until it stops and then he puts petroleum jelly in his nostrils and it stops anymore bleeding.

I've never had a serious nose bleed. I'm like you, if I have one, its allergy or sinus causing it. Several years ago I worked at a nursing home and this one lady had severe nose bleeds. It was awful. We would fill a laundry barrel with stuff she had bled on. One night after her nose bleed the nurse packed her nose with gauze. I watched and when I left the room I got really dizzy and almost passed out. The nurses wouldn't let me into the room again after that if there was going to be any blood, lol.

I dont have nose bleed problems unless my allergies or sinuses are really bad and im all dried out. Usually i use saline spray to keep my nose and such moist. Ive never had one that lasted as long as yours though!!!

With your allergy problems I'm glad you don't have them all that often. Have either of your kids every had one? That would freak me out as a parent. To see a little one with a bloody nose.

Pregnancy does it to me. Not usually bad, just more like when I blow my nose, there is a blood plug. My last proper nose bleed was a few months back, courtesy of one of my girls. White top and all, and we were out!!!! Seems someone didn't like their lunch, so I got a little hand in the face!!!!! The recommendation these days for a nose bleed is to pinch the top of the nose right between the eyes, and have your head forward. If it hasn't slowed after 15 mins, then you should seek medical advice. If it hasn't completely stopped after 30 mins, a trip to the emergency room is recommended. Using ice on the nose and the back of the neck also helps to stem the flow.

I hadn't heard about the tip to put ice on the back of the neck. Thanks, next time it happens I'll try that.

It works because it restricts the blood flow which allows the clotting factors in your blood to do their job. It also reduces the time a nose bleed lasts for as well.

hi ambiepam the last time I had anose bleed, this is weird was when I gave birth to my son fifty years ago,I had that block where they put medication into your spine to stop the pain, well after I gave birth my nose and throat were dry and i was coughing up blood then they found my nose was bleeding back into my throat,so they thought the spinal had some thing to do with it, I was given some sort of antihistamine and it cleared up in a day or so. at first they were worried I had an ulcer but thank goodness it was only from my dry nose and throat. I have never had a nosebleed since.wow. that is strange but lucky I guess
