hi I have a habit of always saying hi to your user names,
I notice everyone does not do this, is it really necessary
or just my own hang-up? I do it just as I think its good
manners but of course it does not have to be done.'
Whats your take on this? I mean this is not a soul riveting
discussion but I just sort of wondered about it.

Hello Patsie,
What do you mean by your question?
As in you like to say hi (like I just did) before you proceed with the rest of your response?
Well, I do that sometimes, I don't do that other times. I think it is ok and not really a lack of courtesy (due to the "info exchange" format of myLot) to omit the hi.
Just my 2 cents!

Hi Patsie, I would suggest you just go with the "flow". If you *feel* like saying hi then, say it. Else, skip it. I would think both are fine. Cheers!

hi lordwarwizard, I mean just by you thought, sometimes I say hi and use the users name and o ther times when I am really tired, I just write in my response and go on to the next. I just got to '
thinking about how I had been carefully typing in hi and the name each time an wondering if I could skip it at times in interestof saving some minutes? No I dont think its ride notto use the user name as sometimes I am very tired and want to get my quota and go to bed. lol

I do not do that but that is not a conscious choice. It is usually I just want to concentrate on my response and do not have time to spend on niceties. It is entirely up to you if you wish to do that or not there is no rule "fur or agin" it.

hi whiteheather, would love to know why I want to call you whitefeather as feather has nothing to make it like heather.
I did not know if there was any rules but never saw any. Sometimes I do and sometimes I dont if I am in a hurry to make my quota I will just plunge on in.

I noticed that I only start with the users name when I have gotten to know them a little better through the discussions. I don't know why that is either.
After commenting on their response to a discussion I've posted, I've noticed that I thank the user and add their username there like 'Thank you for your response Hatley." :)

I don't think it's necessary so it might be your own hang up. I have to say though that I like it when people do it. I try to do it but it doesn't always happen.

will not get upset whether we say hi so and so or just skip it and get to the converastion.

Hatley, not only is it good manners, but it shows the person you are addressing that you have read-heard what they have to say and you are acknowledging to them that you have. It makes us feel good to be addressed by name, it makes it personal, intimate. I try to do the same as tou. Sometimes in a hurry I let it slid by as many good manners are often tossed to the way side, but I try.

Hi Hatley...
I don't know that it is required, but I believe it adds a personal touch to the response you are giving...I think it makes the poster feel like you are wanting to respond and think it is a good discussion..

Hi, Hatley. I know what you mean. Growing up, I was expected to use people's names (although I varied from the taught norm of the time because our neighbors weren't Mr & Mrs, but Charles, Emma, Jim, Florence, etc.) It was proper to acknowledge people by their names. And, probably still is - yet, in the medium like this one, where pseudonyms are the norm, and where other cultures/countries are also in participation, that norm changes because not all cultures are the same. So, I don't think it's right or wrong on here, although I'll use someone's screen name if I want to address them directly (whereas, responding like this, you know I'm speaking to you directly). Other times, where they've revealed another name, I'll use that name when speaking to them directly (such as Mooch whose screen name is something I really don't want to type every time!) Now, Pyewacket - I'll call her Pye, even though I've seen her real name and even though I know her cat's name is Pyewacket. She doesn't generally use her real name, so I don't either.
And no - it's not just your "own hangup". It's how you were raised and you're participating in a totally new environment. The only problem I see herein is that some of the communication methods used online and by cell phone are creeping across into face to face communications and I think that's something best to avoid. I think it's time to bring the teaching of proper communication and introductions back into the schools so they at least have the foundations for when they are out in the live public rather than cyber public.

Hey hatley, I guess it's because we're used to doing it.
I don't really care if someone know's my real name. I
don't like my name, but it's not a secret. I think this
just makes it more fun! I don't know, what do you think?
I kind of like going by Opal-(it's my birthstone-I'm a
Libra). Let's see how others feel. By the way, my name is
Leslie.

Hi Hatley
Even I find myself doing that most of the times. It feels good to address someone with their name. Sometime I do not know how to address , say S123, in those times I say Hi honey/sweetie...

Hi Hatley, As you know from my responses to any of your discussion I always use your name at the beginning of any response. I like you feel that this is polite, maybe in the responses back to the response as it is an ongoing discussion I might not but I will always end any response with Ellie too. Some user names are very long with lots and numerals and in that case I will abbreviate for example with my own user name of ellie333 most poeple will say Hi Ellie and to me that is fine and it what I do also. Ellie :D

I think, it's a polite gesture if you acknowledge the person's username but without it, they would not mind either. What everyone usually looks at and watch out for are the remarks whether they are sensible, friendly, conversational or rude. As for me, it's just okay if one would respond to my discussion without saying hi. It's understood.
