The MadHatter was one of the characters in Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland...maybe folks who don't know this means they never read the book or even seen Disney's classic animated movie. Not really surprising though....I didn't read many children's classics until much later in life...truth be told since my mother wasn't a great reader she never encouraged me to read classics...I practically taught myself to read..then I couldn't stop..LOL

Hi Hatley - you're not a nut. People just don't read like they used to. It has been a very long time since I read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, but the Mad Hatter was one of the card players who kept an Ace (I think) in the rim of his hat. I was very confused by this part of the story along with the Queen, et al, but I do remember him. Of course, the term itself is derived from hatters who would use mercury (again, I think) in their hat forms while making the hats. They often either sized the hats on themselves or wore hats they made, so the chemical in the product would literally "drive them mad". I did miss that discussion, apparently, but I know who that character is (and the white rabbit, the Cheshire cat, and that little white pill.)

I know people who absolutely HATE reading. But, I really suspect it's either they have some sort of reading disability no one has diagnosed or, like my guy friend, are truly hyperactives and can't sit still enough to do it, so their thoughts run wild and it doesn't grab them like it does us. But, if they only knew what they were missing. Books were my refuge as a child. In many ways, they still are. There's a comfort in books, even just owning them, or being in a library, that other things can't provide. More of a serenity, in a way. The book I'm reading now is VERY hard to read - it's about the links between gnosticism, druidism, the Essenes and the Catholic church and how knowledge was kept alive during the dark ages brought on by the Catholic church's denial of education to anyone but clergy as well as monopolizing the interpretation of scripture. Very "academic" so it's a tough read - but also very interesting as I'm learning things I'd never known.

I believe the Mad Hatter (ot MadHatter) is a character from Alice In Wonderland. Wasn't he in charge of something and Alice encountered him in Wonderland? Something to do with the Queen of Hearts I believe. And as I'm typing this, I'm recalling the Disney-ized version...he always made me think of Gene Wilder for some reason. Soooo...am I right? I didn't look this up first, so I'm not really sure if I am off my rocker or if I need a straight jacket...

I have heard of the name before but cannot remember what or who it was. I just looked it up online though and found this. The Mad Hatter is a fictional character in the Batman comics, published by DC Comics. He is modeled after The Mad Hatter from Lewis Carroll's book.

I never knew there was a Mad Hatter character in the Batman series; I only knew of him from Alice in Wonderland. But since that tale is fictional, I would naturally assume that the Mad Hatter from DC Comics is too. Thanks for sharing!

Hatley, are you serious? Well, of course you are. The Mad Hatter is my secret friend. I love him so much I spent more than I could afford at a charity auction for an original cel from the Disney film, and my students had a milliner make me a green tophat exactly like his. When I was a little girl, the only story I would listen to was Lewis Carroll's masterpiece. I can't imagine anyone having such an impoverished childhood that they don't know the Mad Hatter! Those poor people!

The Mad Hatter From Alice in Wonderland - Read the book, you won't regret it
Fewer people read any kind of books today Hatley, let alone the classics. Here's some info and a pic for those of you who need a classical education: lol"The Hatter is a fictional character initially encountered at a tea party in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and later again as "Hatta" in the story's sequel, Through the Looking Glass. He is popularly referred to as the "Mad Hatter," but is never called by this name in Carroll's book- although the Cheshire Cat does warn Alice that he is mad, and the Hatter's eccentric behavior supports this. (Likewise, the chapter in which he first appears, "A Mad Tea-Party", is often erroneously called "The Mad Hatter's Tea Party")."

Fear not Hatley. I recognise Alice in Wonderland when I see it. I have often thought that I would make a good dormouse as, like the one in the story, I love to sleep! Actually, Alice used to give me nightmares. My grandmother would read it to me and her copy was very old with some line drawings that far from getting me off to sleep would keep me awake all night!

hi pikey oh yes its a real classic. I loved those English classes so much as I loved to read anyway, but I hated the criticism' class asit was so stuffy and boring, and made really for those who were going to teach English , but I was not into teaching, I wanted to write fiction. I did get a degree BA in English but I have yet to have any of my writing published. lol

Hi Hatley! But of course; the Madhatter is a character from the book Alice in wonderland. There are many versions of the story, but i liked the one by Lewis Carroll. The madhatter was a character that was a little loony, almost everything he said was a riddle.
