I am just a smidge overweight so have a little mid age bubble in my middle. I am so tired of buying a new top to find out it has that touch of stretch in it that clings to your body. I am sure that it's great for younger women and very slender woman but being a bit on the older side I really dislike the fact that it forms to your shape so it accentuates every little flaw you have! So please bring back the cotton tops or others that don't cling to my flaws! LOL Do you have the same problem?

I am skinny, so I do not have that problem. I recommend that you actually try clothes on before you buy them. Also body shaping underwear is great for giving you are slimmer silhouette. There are lots of cotton tops still around, try shopping around more than you do currently.

You are right..sometimes I just pick something up in my current size then get home and they fit so tight...I really have seen very few tops that don't have that stretchy stuff in them......I love the pants that stretch but not the tops.

Sizes are really badly done and very few people actually have one current size, personally I range between a UK4 and a UK8, so I have to try things on. I think most people are the same. I also thought of something else that you could do. Buy high waisted trousers, this will keep your stomach in and then stretchy tops won't look as bad.

Hi Jill, I have the same sort of body shape but what I do is buy tops that flow out from under the bustline and this way it takes the emphasise away from the tummy area which is where any extra I am carrying tends to be. Even the clingier type of maerials don't seem too bad with this styles of top. My daughter also says that plain dark bottom and patterned top helps, plain top make it worse. Ellie :D

I have one top that is so pretty. Bought it just a few weeks ago. It's bright and looked great in the store on the hanger. Well, I got it home and washed it. Now it clings to my body. Sure didn't when I tried it on. I have a little tummy, not enough to be concerned about, but at my age wearing something tight around the middle isn't a good idea.

I usually try everything on....and you are right. They look good in the store and after a washing they find a new way to fit! Yikes!

Hi jillhill. This problem occurs occasionally for me. That's because my weight goes up and down by 5 to 10 lbs. and that determines whether I'll have this problem. I can tell you one of my little secrets: wear a Spanx under-cami when this problem presents itself. It goes on over the bra and fits very nicely. Plus, I think I stand up a little straighter when I have it on. It doesn't make me feel too squeeshed in, though. I couldn't stand that. Spanx makes some wonderful foundation products that are pretty comfortable but can really make the difference in how a woman looks when she gets all dressed up. It can be obtained online or through Norm Thompson catalogs or online website.

I think its terrible and so hard to find good fitting clothes. The last thing I need is the cling anywhere, as it just makes me look more "gifted". The few stores that sell good clothes are so costly that they aren't affordable.

Its the same story here too. I too love clinging tops, but unfortunately my middle is also out, so its out. Here in India we have lot of cotton tops and light pretty coloured kurtis or lose tops which we can wear and they look very pretty. No matter how much I try, it just refuses to go in to such an extent that I can wear tight tops, so poor us. Anyway, so long as we are happy.

Oh yes, I have that same problem too, most of the tops you see have that stretchy material in them, so I tend to stay away from them, they're cute but it wouldn't look good on me...lol. I'm overweight myself so I don't like to wear anything that clings to me, because it shows everything you don't want to show. I don't know why some women wear things like that if they aren't stick skinny, you can see all their rolls, and if they don't have a flat tummy you can see that too. I guess some people don't care what they look like, but I just couldn't see myself dressing that way, I'm too self-concious. So yes bring back the cotton tops, and take back the clingy stuff..lol. Have a good day

I have a problem when girls who don't need to wear short shirts that show their guts think its sexy, a muffin top is not sexy! Pull your pants up or pull your shirt down its an occular intrusion on my eyes.

I have a large mole on my side and that clingy material even show my mole through it! So if it's a little tight you can see it plain as day!

Just my a bigger size so it does not cling and wear any material you want. I hate cotton because it needs to be ironed LOL. I buy mostly shirts that are cotton/knit which is pretty much jersey material. Its comfortable and really does not need ironing.

Oh you put it across so sweetly, I was almost laughing at my own reflection…its exactly the same with me, only that since I dislike that bubble so very much, I never could think of it in such a cute manner. The saving factor for me is that we Indians are not much into dresses and more into loose salwars (me at least) and since I tailor-make them, they don’t actually hide the bubble but its not so prominent either. Then there are other tricks like the length of the top and the sleeves…the longer they are, the slimmer you look. I remember these while instructing the tailor and am just managing to pull thru.

HI jill, Great topic!! I too have this problem. Isn't it amazing that these tops fit great in the store, then you take them home and wash them and they no longer fit. I work outside the home, and I am very self conscious of my looks. It is very hard to find shirts that fit. I am with you, let's bring back the cotton shirts that don't cling to every flaw that we have. These are cooler and much more comfortable. All cotton shirts may still shrink a little, but we can allow for that. Have a nice day..

Yup....when you do try them on their okay...but once washed then forget it...I have started wearing a blouse over some of them but prefer not to if I don't need to.

The thing that I hate the most about shirts that I have seen in the stores lately is the shortness of the sleeves. I have some flab on my upper arms that I would prefer be covered up a little better than what these shirts do. They are not short sleeve. They are practically NO-sleeve.

I have lots of trouble with this sort of thing and I probably aren't really overweight, but I still have bumps here and there (could they be called curves?). I tried this pretty nice top on the other day, it was good because it was a good length to meet the jeans that are all cut too low these days. Anyway this top was quite long, was black with long sleeves and had a lovely pattern on the front with a few flowers and butterflies in blue and silver. Unfortunately I thought this top made me look a bit too big in the tummy because it was one that gathered under the chest (I think the other word is declared mature by mylot) and then flowed but I didn't think it really suited me. Such a shame because it was quite pretty. The other thing I really hate is that so many jeans and trousers now are so low cut. I don't feel very comfortable showing my tummy off, particularly when I am at work. So bring back some jeans we can wear to work!

Yes, I do...but due to my latest diet regimen, I lost some pounds and now I can wear one of those, however, you're right. I don't like every shape of my body contoured by my clothes...he he he..as it is not perfect., but who is perfect anyway? Go ahead and wear them. You're entitled to...at an age like this...Happy mylotting.
