My Cats Have It Confirmed...They Now KNOW Their Mom Is Nuts

I recently started a discussion of how I've been inundated with a LOT of pesky flies....I had gotten the flypaper traps and honestly those flies must know what it's for as they've avoided it like the plague...Then I did actually find one idea on-line about taking a jar, place some kind of bait...like food...I used molasses, punch holes in the top..the idea they can get in but they can't get out...nope they seemed to avoid that too. Some of my friends suggested placing in a small jar lid or other container some pepper..don't know if it worked. I didn't have a fly swatter but did roll up a newspaper, and tried my skills to swatted the darn pests..no good, my fly swatting skills suck...or....at least they did...hehee Anyway, I was plain fed up with those flies..so most of the night I've been off-line, why you may ask? Just call me Fly Stalker....I don't have a fly swatter like I said, but a rolled up a newspaper...So I decided to practice my fly swatting technique--THIS WAS WAR! It was either me or the flies...I really didn't realize that there really were A LOT of flies until I did a vigilant stalking around my entire apartment...weapon in hand ready to blast those bugs to smithereens with my rolled up paper...Now there still are a few buzzing around, but not as many as before...Honestly I had to laugh at myself, and one image that came to mind was the scene in Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, where the elf, Legolas was counting off all the orcs he was killing..because I was counting off those bugs as I swatted them into oblivion and bug heaven...I counted 22...yes, 22 of those bugs! They were in the bathroom, kitchen, hallway, even bedroom. The thing is....my cats must think their mom has gone off the deep end...if they could I just know they'd be shaking their heads going tsk, tsk, tsk..better call for those men in the white coats...mom has lost it. I still might be off-line more than on....my mission..to get every single one of those suckers....My swatting skills have definitely improved within a short time...but then I was downright determined. So, those of you who have pets....do you ever think if you do something a tad odd, that your pets might look at you and think you were nuts...Aren't you glad they don't know how to call 911 and tell the dispatcher to come over with a net to catch you and place you in a "nice friendly place"?

My sweet Maya has known this for a very long time! I have a tendency to dance and wiggle with no apparent causation. Also, as a lifelong confirmed Cub fan by birthright, I tend to burst into the "go, Cubs, go!" song at a moments notice! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrlLmTh32KI Which also requires wiggling and vigorous arm waving and fist pumping. She will tilt her head and just look at me. In my defense, she acts the same way when she is on catnip.

LOL...well I don't know if this is a compliment or not, but sometimes as I'm cleanig the apt, I put on a CD and start signing and Kissy usually comes running over to me...I don't know if it's because she's admiring my singing or trying to tell me to shut up.

Yes its good she couldnt call 911 and send over the white coats. "hurrah hurray I am going away , with the men in the little white coats, I have a note from Napolean V, that hes got something for me to see, hurrah hurray I am going away with the men in the little white coats." lollol lol.

I think my two kitties have since accepted some of the strange things I do..Like my habit of yelling at the computer with language a truck driver would use....if they could think they would just roll their eyes and think "Mom's done a mistake on the computer again"

I hope you have gotten the few more or the beasties and you will soon be fly free! Around here we call moths - myths because once they get inside, they don't last long!

Mom said that the newspaper was the weapon of choice for champion fly swatters - so you are in good company - and you can't BEAT the price!

Yup...I think I'm just about fly free now....I was in my local Walgreens today and nearly burst out laughing....as I past one isle I saw....plastic fly swatters for $1.19...was thinking of getting one, but heck I'm doing just fine with that rolled up newspaper

My fly swatting skills suck too. It is like a slapstick comedy when I go after a fly. The fly usually gets the 'upper hand' and I end up more frustrated than I started out. I'll end up with welts on my skin and stuff knocked over all around the room and the fly will still be buzzing around... taunting me mercilessly. Therefore I have had to come to an agreement with them. I will leave them alone if they leave me alone. They have kept their side of the agreement so I have kept mine. I also figure they can get out the same way they got in so when I see one buzzing around the door I open the door and let it out. They're as bad as my cats wanting in and out!

Well I'm improving quite a lot with my fly swatting routine...I'm zapping them like crazy now...LOL. I had one unfortunate incident....one of those, "I can't believe I did that..how DUMB" One fly was on the lampshade...so I whacked it...my force must have been a tad too strong and wound up creating a hole in the lampshade....waaahhhhh I would leave the flies alone too, big problem....they could be breeding and laying only more eggs...the average female fly can lay up to 500 eggs...uh, no thanks

I guess it only takes one female fly to sneak in the garbage somehow and lay her eggs...the average female fly can lay a total of 500 eggs in her lifetime in batches of 50-75....so there's your maggot farm for ya...ewwwwwww

Moist and warm, and with a source of food for it's darling little babies, hehehe. I'm fortunate to have the whole outdoors to keep my garbage... well, I mean I do have a grocery bag that I keep in a little plastic trash can in the kitchen which I take outside to the big can just about every evening. Which reminds me... how in the hell does that little plastic trash can get so FILTHY when I never throw garbage directly in it and only put garbage in the plastic bag?!?!?!? I have hosed it out and bleached it out and felt all prim and proper about it and the next thing I know it's looking like a potential maggot farm again!!

Hi Pye..I hope you haven't got a nest of flies there maybe you should get it checked out if they come back again...if my dogssee me swatting a bug or something they start wagging their tails as if to say 'I haven't done anything wrong mum..are you alright?' it makes me laugh especially as one of them 'grins' at me at the same time!! Then there's when I tell my Grandson that something is naughty..once again the dogs get worried and come up to me as if to say 'I haven't mum'..it can be quite funny sometimes as the dogs seem to know everything I say..well most of what I say..bb littleowl

I sometimes think our pets can understand us a whole lot better than we can understand them, don't you think?

Yes I don't think we all give them credit for how sensitive animals can be and how they do understand more than what we think they do..bb littleowl

yes when i do something Coco my little dog dont understand, she hides under the bed. my late hubby could hit a fly with a broken rubber band! he said he learned it in viet nam when they were sitting around with nothing to do sometimes they would kill them and put them in a pile and see who got the most and that person got drinks bought for them when they went out. btw, you can get a swatter for a dollar at the dollar store if you have one near there.

no, i think it was just because there were so many flies there and it was at times when they had nothing else to do and were bored until the time would be to go out on the helicopters and fight.he was one of the guys that leaned out of the helicopter and shot at the enemy.

I am sure my animals think I am nuts, but I would say yours are not earning their keep. I had one kitty that sat in the window and caught flies, day and night, and she would leave them in neat little piles. I keep a bottle filled with white vinegar and spray them. Or the store brand of Listerine original. Neither of them will hurt you or the cat, and the mouthwash makes the air smell fresh. It keeps the flies and mosquitoes away, at least temporarily.

lol..... that is quite a comical site to think about. Running around trying to swat all the flies! Love it. I'm the same way- If I see a bunch of them... I grab a newspaper or my shoe and go for the kill. My cats all love to chase flies too. So at times I think they are thinking- mom let us help--- you are taking away all the fun. :)

Your discussion evoked warm memories of my dear uncle, pyewacket. He also used to wage all-out warfare against those pesky flies. He was an expert with the fly swatter, and wasn't above swatting flies over the dinner table(really irritating to my aunt). I have to say that I've only seen one or two flies this whole summer due to my holing up in my apartment with the A/C running almost constantly. I am well aware of how bothersome the critters can be. I think that pets have definite ideas about the behaviors of their humans and often find them odd.

Wow all those flies. I'd be going batty as well. I've only had like 2 flies in my house the whole summer, although I have had a few other bugs though. I do odd things all the time, and my kitties just look at me in amusement lol.

Hi pye, I am glad you are quite expert at swatting flies now you have got rid of a few, and yes I can understand why you cat thinks you have lost the plot because my cats thinks the same of me when I'm on the floor execising, they sort of looks at me saying what in the world are you doing on the floor raising your legs up and down? well I think they all thinks we all mad now and again. Bright Blessings. Tamara

LOL. I have the same fly problem.. I have given up swatting them and pray for winter so the cold air will get them.. lol But I did have an experience similar to yours.. I had a centipede in my bathroom and I screamed and started jumping up and down trying to stomp on it (and those buggers are FAST) My dogs came running -to wee why mommy screamed -The cats all fled (cuz they are smart like that) and after I was done- I looked at the dogs who were staring at me totally perplexed. I mean hey you screamed.. I came running .. where is the big bad I am supposed to save you from.. I looked at them started laughing and trying to convince them I was NOT nuts!! They walked away. I too was confirmed NUTS!

I took a peek at your profile page and saw all the pictures of your dogs (beautiful) and your three kitties. I think if my cats saw a centipede they would run and hide...LOL Yikes that must have been a large centipede you had though....know what's even faster though...and I hate them...silverfish! Ever try to catch them?

well as long as you get them all that is what counts, you can also place a bowl in the sing with soapy water and they will go to it I am told, I don't know I never tried it.

All it takes is one pesky fly to sneak in maybe when I had the door open...and if it was female could have laid eggs which could explain why I had a good number of them ..one time, now you have to understand I do keep a clean apt....and clean out the garbage constantly, but just the other day when I opened up the trash to pull it out to throw out, on the bottom were.....maggots..."baby" flies..must have been about forty of them..AND I JUST CLEANED the garbage container the day before! But maggots do grow fast into flies ...I do routinely clean out the garbage container..anyway when I saw that took the garbage container into the bathroom and turned on the hot water in the tub filled the container with the hot water and dumped it in the "loo"--good thing I'm not the squeamish type though

OMFG, You are my long lost sista twin too! That so sounds like something I would do! When I get something in my mind that needs doing no matter how crazy that's it! I could see myself doing the same exact thing, in fact I think I have! I'm pretty sure I have done the rolled up newpaper thing before to catch some pesky flying creature, probably a horsefly that my cats couldn't catch! And oh yes, they've seen mommy doing some strange things and I'm so glad that they can't dial to call 911 or I might really be in big trouble too! I'm glad Luna can only say "mama" and not "mama" is nuts! Actually, just recently I had a bunch of those little annoying gnats or fruit flys in my apartment and they were all over the place and in my face taunting me and I was swatting them, but they were to small for me to really hit. The seem to have disappeared so I'm just thankful that somehow they left maybe the way they came? I do hope that you get those annoying critters because I would hate for them to win and I would have to visit you in the hospital and maybe have to bring your "children" to you on "visiting day" to see "mommy" sitting in a corner and mumbling something to herself about those damn flies!

It really is great how our kitties accept us unconditionally no matter what bizarre or weird things we do There are still a few pesky flies around but nowhere near the number I had...I've gotten quite accomplished as a fly swatter When my two kitties do give me a weird look as I swat the flies though, I say to them.."Hey, this is supposed to be your job in catching them" LOL

About fly swatting - there is actually a technique to swatting those pesky flying insects! Recently on the news it appears that researchers in the US have solved the mystery of why flies are so hard to swap. The research suggests that the best way of swatting a fly is to creep up slowly and aim ahead of its location. And isn't that why we keep pets? Pets are always our friends, they don't tell on us, even on the periods of almost-insanity that some of us go through when we are alone. I mean, animals certainly don't call the police when we sing in the bath with our creaky voices or talk to ourselves through the mirror! Just my 0.2 cents.
