poverty: is it reason enough to commit suicide?

Philippines
September 9, 2008 6:27am CST
i felt bad earlier while watching the national news over the television. one mother killed her 3 children by letting them drink "toilet duck" a brand that is used to clean kitchen sink and bathroom tiles and after which she killed herself as well. most of the neighbors said that the reason why she had to commit suicide is because of poverty and they owe a lot already from their neighbors and what the husband is earning is not enough to provide for the family? is poverty reason enough to kill oneself and your children? i know there are a lot of ways how to solve a problem and not by committing suicide and what's worse is she killed her children too. too bad.

That is really sad to hear. She has given up so easily as there are many other means where she can get help from others. The government can assist at some point. She could have maybe help his husband from earning a little on the side. I think she needs a little creativity that she needs to do to make things work a bit. I think in cases like this its her self pity that pushed her to do this thing to herself and more so with her innocent kids. It is sad and tragic that this thing happened but I do not think this is a hopeless case if she just trust herself top continue her life.

What a sad story. It's a shame this woman couldn't reach out for some kind of help before taking such a drastic step. Didn't her husband notice she was in such a bad way?

Well i guess the husband was clueless at all or might just be too busy and ignored the signs at all.

it was really sad, i agree with you that she should have though of something to help with their finances. the husband was working in the city that was why he didn't notice it and the mother was interviewed she mentioned that they didn't notice anything that she will be doing it at all. thanks for the post!!!

This is sad. Taking away a life, yours or others, can never be justified by poverty. I do understand that living is difficult... but each and everyone of us has to fight and work really hard to fight poverty. On a socio-economic perspective, this should be a wake up call to the government - both local and national, and to the international body that focuses on international economic movement, that wealth had to be balanced out to everyone and we should be able to provide the basic needs of the grassroots. Sad. It happened.

Unfortunately with all the high cost of everything anymore it can truly make a person depressed. For someone to do something like this though, was there not a sign of something like this? Can you imagine how the husband must feel? This is so sad that someone would do this. To kill your kids and then yourself. Unfortunately things like this happen, and there needs to be a solution and more help available before people stoop to this.

i really dont think so that poverty is the main reason for commiting such crime.. well, i dont have some money too. but i find the means to really work hard to earn some.. there are a lot of reasons and ways to really be earning money.. but most of all, it has to do with the way you looked at life.. if and when you see it negatively, then certainly, you will respond to it negative too. so, again, there are a million ways to kill a cat.. hope you get what i meant..

I think that any parent who would kill their own children must be mentally imbalanced to begin with, despite the poverty. But stress can trigger depression and unstable behavior in some individuals, and being poor and not able to provide for your children could certainly be stressful! It's so sad to hear of these types of stories. There are a lot of people living in poverty who don't kill anyone or themselves, so I don't think that's an adequate reason.

Oh absolutely not! Especially when there are charities out there to provide the basic needs for a human being. I think she was just depressed. I am struggling financially myself as a single mom but I have people helping me. I have medicaid for my kids and I get food stamps plus I contatced crisis assistance to provide furniture. Also there are places that give poor people donated cars. I don't know where this woman lived but if she lived in the US she could have got the help easily. Life is not that bad, come on now.

Poverty sure is not the way. However, I think the mother thought she was doing herself and the kids a favor by killing them. She probably thought if living condition is so harsh and money is always going to be a problem, why let the kids live this kind of life. I wonder what country this happened in? I have to say poverty sometimes is the best mix of richness. Why do I say that? Many are much happier with less money and others are so unhappy but they have all this money. I don’t want to get started about the USA government on how much they pay and provide welfare, food stamps, and cash for those claiming to live in poverty, when in reality they have several kids; don’t work yet they can go and get their nails done, buy new clothes and never have to work in their liftetime. Oh did I mention free childcare, free preschool, free meals at school, and free everything else. Yes it does bug the heck out of me to see this mother having to make this choice. She should have seek help at her nearest center (I don’t know what they call them) but the place where they will help families in need. At least in the USA they have one, if you do not have legal documents and have no job or low paying jobs and young kids, they will help you.

That is no reason at all, se must have had some serious problems to take such action. Either we don't know the full story or she had some mental problems. That is such a sad story.

Who doesn't have a problem these days, anyway? Even if you say, you are still eating 3 square meals per day, you still feel the crisis or in worst terms "poverty". However, in my opinion, taking your own life much more of your children is lunatic. I am not that religious and I also share the common paranoia of depression, helplessness especially so if you're jobless and no one would lend you money because they won't trust you. But remember, there is still Almighty God who is in control of all the things around us including our lives. Let us not feel abandoned, instead, pray and pray for some more and He shall hear us and in due time find means to our need. Have faith and believe in His might and power. For all brothers and sisters who are about to give up life, please don't. I ask you to pray for mercy and help. Almighty God will not compromise his power to save you from any misery.

This is really sad. But I don't think poverty was the main reason however that still plays a huge part. It is sad that a lot of people need help and can't get it when it is actually availible. And we wonder why Jesus said" It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven". This is sad but people are selfish and that's just the way it is. I see people go and get free stuff and won't tell their neighbor of the resources they've found knowing that person is in need.People are so insensitive.

Poverty isn't enough to make me do that no. Nor would I do it to my children. There are always options out there for help. I know, cause I'm pretty poor myself. Health on the other hand would be an option for me to consider it. I'm disabled, and getting worse and the thought has crossed my mind a time or two. But, I'm stubborn and love my family too much to do so. So for now, I'm still around.
