Why does every Halloween costume that’s designed for a woman have to be sexy?

September 12, 2008 You’ve got the “naughty” librarian, the “hot” nurse, the “bad” teacher and the “filthy” French maid. They even have a sexy pirate costume, how is scurvy sexy? I’m not a prude and the only one that hasn’t been altered is a nun’s habit. I just think fantasies are for behind closed doors not public display. I guess we’ve all seen cheerleaders and swim suits and we’re bored so we have to spice up a fall holiday in order to have fun. Am I alone on this?

yes very irritating. and guess who buys and wears them? But, I prefer the creative, old fashioned Halloween. I never bought a Halloween costume in my life. One year I went to the office as GI Joe. I wore my husband's fatigues, boots and hat. Now I was sexy that year. Another year I went as a Serial Killer. (A Blouse and skirt with those many cereal boxes pinned to it, with knives and blood running out!) I know that was pretty lame. But for me, that's the challenge. Come up with something original or with a new twist, and the materials and make it myself. That's the fun of Halloween. (Well, that and the spooky pranks and all that CANDY!)

well and when my daughters were young I was so excited for Halloween and wanted to make really neat costumes and made suggestions and all they wanted to do is buy the commercial, popular ones they saw on TV, their favorite characters and what their friends were doing. I was one bummed Mama!

I agree with you. You think that is irritating? I am pregnant and will be about 8 months along around Halloween. I refuse to paint and then display my baby bump. First, EWW! Secondly what if it is cold? No thanks, not for me. You aren't alone. My hubby has come up with some neat t shirt Ideas I may give a try. Let us know what you end up being, I bet it will be great!

I don't think they have to be sexy, but a lot of them are. I think it is something that should be behind closed doors myself. I don't like the idea of dressing really skimpy in public myself. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

It was a bit irritating when my boyfriend and I wanted to go last year as matching bunnies, but the only outfits I could find that were not hundreds of dollars and elaborate to the point I'd never want to wear it was sexy playboy bunny outfits. :( I know it's pretty easy to make a costume but I am lazy and not very artistic and wanted to buy it, especially if we could buy matching outfits. (I know it's a bit cheesy but who cares?)

they are the one that sells, if not they would not be all around the place for me and my kids I prefer home made costumes, though Halloween is not as popular as it is here in my country, but my first born birthday is just a week away from Halloween, Sometimes we make costume party for his birthday. I sew a bumble bee costume and sponge bob! as for me I found a nice black dress and just decorate it to look like I am a witch. It is more fun to make costumes than buy one, it is very practical too. This year I still have no idea what they would wear this coming Halloween. do you have one? I have 3 cute boys to dress up!

I don't have a costume picked out yet, probably angry dad. Not sure what the kids are wearing either, I have a boy and a girl. I can guess what the girl will be wearing but the boy might change his mind.

I just think fantasies are for behind closed doors not public display The sexy adult costumes are for adult parties (think Playboy mansion, swingers parties etc) and for the record there are sexy men's costumes too...I've NEVER seen a man or a women wearing a sexy adult costume in inappropriate places to be honest with you..

Oh and when I was a girl I was always a gypsy or a pirate princess. But I guess with women it is suppose to be for those ah -private parties? Or for wives to arouse husbands. And are they not a little old to go trick or treating? I do not like Halloween but in those old movies they had some very decent costumes for ladies, but I guess morality went out through the window. It does get rather boring and I would not want to dress up as one of the bad girls. I cannot see the fun in that. I was a bad girl and it sure is not something to emulate.

I'm tired of all the dresses, myself. I did see a loverly pointed black hat that I really, really want...but all the girl costumes around these parts are cutesy rather than sexy, and all dresses. BLEGH! Give me some more variety, please! It's a rare occasion I wear a dress...and I'm not a prude either, I just don't like following crowds, very much...lol.

I have noticed that too, somewhat. There are costumes for women that are not sexy. Myself, I think half the fun in getting dressed up is to be creative and come up with some sort of get-up that I put together myself. I have never gone out and bought a costume for myself nor my kids.

The go today is always like this. Besides that is what sells. Costume makers have to make money too and that is why they do this.

HI I know what you mean! I run an online lingerie store which stocks some of the items you mention above (and more) - which is great for that site. However, we are in the process of opening up a site which will cater for adult and child fancydress and have really been battling to source costumes for adults which aren't 'sexy' - just plain good ol' fashioned fancy dress! Luckily, I think I have finally found someone - he has some great costumes, but some of them are really really pricey - even when we are looking at the wholesale price! Maybe I will just stock the lower end of his price scale - those which will be affordable to the masses - lol. Pity you are in the US or I could have helped you out (with a good price of course) - what are you looking for specifically? Violetdreams

I checked out your website. Nothing on there would fit me, thanks though.

Oh dear, that's not good! we do have some stuff in + sizes but not sure if it woudl be what you are looking for or indeed if it would even fit. I have noticed that the sizes are somewhat odd, for eg - a UK 14 is considered Large - that is not something that I would have thought, Medium OK, but Large? Does that mean that a UK 16 is considered a +size? What next hey?

The only reason i can come up with its Halloween gives you the right to dress like a "sl*t" and get away with it. maybe "sl*t" is not a nice word so we will say "sexy" you can dress sexy and someone will say "it's Halloween, no big deal" its the time to have fun and just be crazy. you can find some non sexy costumes online.

Need we say more? - why do they do it??
ooo but there is a naughty nun costume...lol and one that is prego. It depends on where you look they are not all sexy. If you got the body to pull it off them more power to you if you want to be wexy wench. But yes I know that they are everywhere. I make my own so I don't have to worry about it. I have a gothic outfit that I love and still wear the dress because is black velvet. But I now went back to making my clown outfits...lol I will wear a witch costume from time to time. Wonder if men design the sexy women costumes. But if you don't want to spend a lot of money Walmart has a good selection and not all are sexy.

I've often wondered this myself. I tend to create my own costumes rather than buying them...or if i buy a pattern i alter it so its not as risque. Ive gone as my dad (borrowed his coveralls a hat of his his boots and drew myself a mustache) a princess, cleopatra (a bit more covering around the midriff area) santa, a dinosaur, flower, my mom used to make us costumes as kids too...in someways i was jealous of the kids who got boughten costumes but i appreciated the costumes my mom made us because i knew how much time effort and swearing over her sewing machine she spent just for us.

I have had that thought as well. If you dress sexey everyone will think that you are sleazy, but that seems to be all that is available unless you want to be something like a nun or a clown. I am always hoping we don't get invited to a Halloween party because I fear having to pick out a costume.

Yeah, I know what you mean, why can't there be normal teacher, nurse, librarian, and maid costumes, that don't have to show everything you have. I think those fantasies should be left in the bedroom too, I for one wouldn't wear one anyway..lol. Anytime I dressed up for Halloween I was always dressed in something scarey, like a witch, or Michael Myers or something like that..lol. Your not alone in this....

Lol, even the nun's habit has been 'altered' you just have not come across it yet. I agree, the outfits are over the top. It's not like we are all out to seduce some poor guy, lol. Fortunately, regular Halloween stores still have 'normal' outfits available, but they are hidden away in the back.

Oh yeah, there's a "sexy nun" costume! There are some that I think are really cute and/or funny, but for the most part, those costumes are for girls without the imagination or character to be something interesting or gross. Halloween's about scary, NOT sexy!!!
