I just came across this story...it's actually a month old, but the story goes is that a mother cat and her one-week old kittens were trapped inside a burning house in the El Paso County area. By watching the video you can see that it was a pretty horrific fire, yet somehow mother cat and her kittens came out of it alive.
The mother cat saved her own kittens by taking them to a back room of the house, hiding them under a board and shielded them with her own body The mother cat and kittens were found and rescued by the fireman and were placed with a person who became their foster care person. The cats are now named...Sadie..who is the mother cat, and Abby and Lennon (the kittens).
Here's the article:
(Quote)
A cat and her one-week-old kittens were trapped inside a burning house at the beginning of August in eastern El Paso County.
"The mom took the kittens into the back room. She laid over the kittens and a volunteer firefighter found them under a board," said John Swetman with Dreampower Animal Rescue.
Now, 6 weeks later, Sadie's maternal instincts become a remarkable story about survival. Little Abby and Lennon are alive and well, living in foster care with their mom.
"They were all named after Beatles; Abby for Abbey Roads, Sweet Sadie, and of course, little Lennon," said Ron Diltz, the foster dad of the three cats.
"They’re sweet and playful. We call her adventerous Abbey," said Julie Dudman, the foster mom.
While Abbey and Lennon play, Sadie watches. She has no idea that she's a hero. She was just following her motherly instinct and keeping her little ones safe.
All three will be up for adoption through Dreampower Animal Rescue next week. Three dogs and another cat that's pregnant were also rescued from the fire. They will be up for adoption soon.

This is so reminiscent of that story that happened years ago...about Scarlet..another momma cat who also saved her litter of kittens from a fire and was rescued..that incident occurred in the Brooklyn section of NYC
Okay I'm a real softie about hearing stories like this...wonderful to know animal mothers have that instinct to save their little ones, isn't it? Heck, animal mothers I think sometimes make better moms than humans do in some cases

I herd about that book, is is good? I remember the news showing the video when it had happened and she went in and got each one and took them out to safety, I think she brought them across the street to a safe location away from the fire. Incredible story.

What a great story! Was it an abandoned building, or were these pets of the owners and up for adoption because now the owners are homeless? Lots of animals in that one house! Amazing they all survived. Cats are wonderful mommies!

No I think it was a regular family home and maybe they weren't home? And the mother cat and kittens were given to a pet rescue place and they were taking care of them all

What a great mama cat. Cats are the best animals. I saw the video and they are all adorable. I would love to have that mother cat. I think calico's are gorgeous. But I need another cat like I need a hole in my head.

Now, gee I wonder why you say cats are the best animals
I wouldn't mind adopting all three of them....if I could...but my landlord placed a restriction on how many cats I can have..long story

No kittens. The one I have is driving me batty.
He just learned to get up on my bed yesterday. Now I don't even have that one little place to get away from him and his investigations of new and exciting places... like the inside of my nose when I'm sleeping.
Only 1 or 2 weeks and he goes to his forever home.
They can watch him grow up into a civilized cat.

My response is completely off the topic of this discussion.
As we pulled into the hospital for dads surgery this morning there was a van in front of us. Odd thing it made me think of you.
It's license plate was PYE followed by 3 numbers. The numbers I don't recall.
Just wanted to share this as I felt you were with us at that time.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Pye, the more I try to catch up the further I get behind!! lol But gotta give me credit where credit is due for I'm trying!! lol
This is a wonderful sweet story! It is amazing how animals can be such caring little creatures or big creatures... lol I wish our human counterparts could take a lesson or two, maybe our world wouldn't be in the shape it's in if things like this happening were taken to heart as it should be. Great story!! Thanks for sharing!!

Don't worry CatsandDogs I'm WAY behind too, I'm doing more writing for other sites so am not here as much lately. Yes, animals seem to be more caring of their young than human mothers.

Aww that is sweet !! Stories like this show us that cats are just like humans in the sence that they will protect their young any way they can without regards to themselves . It was so nice to hear the story had a happy ending for both the mother and her kittens :)

That is such a great story and one that shows just how deep a mother's instinct will go. It's great that they were able to rescue the animals and will be finding them good homes.

In many cases this can be true. When one has a child, furry or not so furry, it becomes about them rather then you. Many moms don't realize this. Their instinct is to help themselves not their child. I wonder how many mothers would do the same as this cat or would just try and save themselves.
Yay for Sadie, Abby and Lennon. I'm going to send this video over to my sister. She just found out her kitty has growths on her leg and depending how the tests come out she may lose her leg. She's taking it very hard. We do know of a another little kitty that two of her friends are caretakers of who they adopted with only three legs as a kitten. And he doesn't even seem to notice and runs around terrorizes the older kitties in the house. I love their cats in any case - I used to cat sit when I lived in CA and its funny in the middle of the night they meet in the kitchen and just stare as if they're having a kitty conference. But that's off topic!
Thanks for the link.

Aww...I feel sorry for your sister and can only imagine how she must be feeling. Animals are great survivors though and can adapt very well just on three legs. Ever hear of that story about Faith, the dog? It was born with only TWO back legs....it was adopted by very kind, patient people and Faith is somewhat of a celebrity now and has even appeared on Oprah

Thats been a few years back and i actually have a little book about Scarlet. which shows that animals are often better mothers. it makes me feel that way when you see how some human mothers do their babies.
