Mac, XP, Vista??

I'm in the mood to shop for a new computer. I'm not sure which way to go anymore. Currently, we have a desktop computer with windows xp loaded on it. I've become very familiar with it, and do like it. It is just getting full and SLOW! BUT, while shopping, I find that you can only find computers with Vista loaded on them. I've heard so many bad things about Vista, I don't even want to deal with it. First and foremost... it's a resource hog. Kind of like there is a reason you need 500 million GB harddrive. (OK, bit of exaggeration.) How about Macintosh? Macs have been around much longer and seem to be a lot "safer" as far as hacking and virus are concerned. They can even run windows based programs (i.e. MS Office) with no hassels. My question then is, can my windows based games (i.e. Sims 2 and MM) be played on a Mac? What are your opinions? Be honest.

If you're a serious gamer (as in you play MMORPGs more than 3 times a week), stick with XP. Vista, as someone notes, is not very friendly towards games, and I wouldn't suggesting running XP on your Mac machine because not all applications work well with Boot Camp (the software used to run XP on a Mac). Depending on what MMOs you're talking about, most DON'T have a Mac version, so if you get a Mac kiss it goodbye. It would be easier and better for you to get a new computer with faster memory specifications and a larger hard-disk space. If you can only find comps with Vista loaded on them, why not just build your own system? That was what I did when I got my new computer earlier this year. Saved me time and money.

That may be the direction we head. Thanks for the advice!! Can you suggest any good places to buy the hardware/software that won't break the bank?

Unless you're in Malaysia, unfortunately not. I did my shopping at the PC Fair in Malaysia, where there's a 3 day sale on computer parts. It's a quarterly event here.

I had Windows 98SE for the longest time and loved it. The only reason I got XP is because all these programs and games were coming out and saying "Compatible with Windows 2000/XP only. The reason hardcore windows fans love 98SE is because it had less bugs, better security and stuff. Yes its a horror, 98SE has better security then XP, but go figure its Microsoft, they are moving so slow its backwards smile.gif Anyways I've been experimenting with Linux, or at least trying to experiment. I havn't managed to get my computer to boot off of a Linux installation yet but I'm almost there. I just ordered new computer parts, I am going to put together a computer that just uses linux. Probably turn it into some sort of server later, because even if Windows 98SE was an awesome version of Windows, it still sucks.

well am having a laptop and a desktop pc. in my desktop computer am using windows xp operating system. it is good and fast. no problem with that. then in my laptop am using windows vista. the problem is it is slow even though the laptop has good configuration than the desktop pc. so i think, if possible u buy a laptop with only dos loaded in it. then u install windows xp by yourself. that would be a better option if you dont use internet often. am telling this because some people are telling that, using xp for internet browsing in laptops is not safe. am not sure about it. but i know one thing, that is, the vista os is not good. it is having lots and lots of problems and complaints. its just like the beta version of a software, that means its somewere around the testing phase. may be later versions of vista will be more reliable and useful. system crashes occur more commonly in vista. then about mac, mac is good but xp is better than mac.

There is no equivalence to xp.It offers all features greater than vista and mac.Xp has compatibility to almost all softwares whereas vista and mac are limited

Ive never owned a mac but from what ie heard they arent as good as windows for general use, they are designed more for multimedia e.g. photoshop and web design. if i were you i would continue to shop around for something with XP, Vista is crap! the problem is most computer are now preloaded with Vista so you wont get as wider choice of PC.

I have always used Windows XP. I have never tried any of the other ones. I have heard people say that they have had alot of problems with Vista, but I heard MAC is pretty good too.

What does MM stand for? Ok Honest opinion here. First thing you should know is that exe files do not work on Macintosh. So all your old applications and stuff go to the trash. You would have to go around downloading Mac Versions now, and don't worry, Mac comes with so many applications that you might want to reconsider downloading any other. So what is your budget? Macs start from a range of $ 1000 and go to a max of $2500. Which is the case of Mac Portable Computers and not the iMac. The iMac would be much cheaper, or around the same cost. What you have heard about the Mac is absolutely right. There have been no virus threats to the Mac Community and it is one of the most stable OS. But it comes at a cost. If you are a hardcore gamer, then Mac is not for you because there are no games for the mac. Instead, you can install XP on your Mac and run the games on it for a change. bourne

Sorry, MM... I forgot to finish it, as I can't remember the acronym. MMORPG games... online gaming. (9 dragons being my favorite) I haven't done a lot of research on the Macs, but if I can install the XP on it, it may work. Thanks for the advice!

Windows has a vast market of compatible software, trust me! Stick with XP, Vista is crap! I don't think they'll work according to what I heard in another forum! But I could be wrong.Macintosh could be the 'Ferrari' of all computers and I still wouldn't buy one! The layout is too childish !

Thanks for the advice. I know the MMO that I play is reworking it's software to be compatible with Vista. Still scares me, though.
