Hi Mylotters have anyone of you ever tried to do something' in the dark with horrid results? My son Robbie had a glass of water by his bed on the bedside table. He had a dry throat so did not turn on the light, just took a swallow of water, then He felt something flutter in his mouth,so,still half asleep he took some more water. He said something crawled down his throat and bit him as it went. Whatever it was caused his throat to swell and it was hard for him to breathe. So finally he turned on his light and took some benadryl for allegry and the swelling went down. He woke yesterday morning witha sore throat and some chest pains but they subsided. We think he swallowed a spider and it kept biting him until the stomach acids killed it. Did anyone you ever have a mishap because you did not turn on the light?

OMG is RIGHT, Hatley!! You just described one of my worst nightmares - I used to wake up seeing spiders all over me, but when I turned on the light, there was nothing. If I knew I had actually swallowed one for real (or even suspected it), I would absolutely FREAK!!! I HATE those eight-legged creatures from hell (and, yes, I know they are beneficial, kill other bugs, etc etc etc - it doesn't stop my feelings! I'm totally irrational.) I hope, if it was a spider, that it wasn't one of the ones like a brown recluse or such, which would be more problematic in the throat area than on the surface of the skin. OMG - my skin is crawling just thinking about it!! I hope Robbie is OK.

hi oh how prophetic you were 11 months later damn the spiders'life hust handed us a real sucker punch not long after that, son lose his job,we lost our apartment, we were homeless, that real enough for'you girl now we are separated my son is in govpaid apartment with three other unemployed men and i am in 'gold crest retirement paid for'by my social security and ssi so if we deserved a d ose of reality well damn we sure got it but personally I wish this all had never happened. as for not adoring spiders a great many people have a healthy respect for them as the brown recluse bite can cause tissue destruction

Jerzgirl you should get some sort of professional help for that arachnophobia. I cannot imagine going though life reacting like that to every spider I see. Since they are so common you must be in constant emotional disarray . I have enough real life fears without an imagined one such as you have.

I have not ever been bitten, but I have gotten a bug in my mouth. I put a glass or cup by my bed that has a lid. It is a good screener for creepy crawlies. I think taking the benadryl was smart.

Try riding a motrocycle at 60 MPH in the summer nights. YUCK! I've eaten my share of gnats, flies, skeeters, and moths. Many other little bugs too I feel. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Oh my Hatley, that sounded really scary reading your discussion. I hope he is ok! I have not had anything like that happen to me and I hope it never does. I do tend to turn on the light before I seek out anything.

Oh poor Robbie! I'm glad the benadryl took the swelling down. That usually does the trick. I had something similar happen once but I have no idea what kind of insect it was. A couple of years ago I had a terrible sinus infection and couldn't breathe through my nose. When I finally fell asleep my mouth was open. My mouth and throat got so dry it woke me up a couple hours later and I couldn't swallow so I grabbed the nearest thing to drink which was the remainder of my morning coffee. I took a big gulp and felt this chunk hit my throat. It was so far back in my throat by the time I felt it there was nothing I could do but swallow it. I don't think I want to know what it was. Ewwww *shivers*. Ever since then I keep a bottle of water next to my bed that has a pull top lid. No little creatures are going to crawl into my drink when I'm not looking ever again!!

That is one of the most horrible stories I've heard fro a long long time. Yeauch!! I'm so glad Robbie is OK. I was bitten by a spider just the once last year and I was really feeling ill within about half an hour. The next day I couldn't even get out of bed. I will now think very carefully about drinking and eating in the dark! My own horror stories about doing things in the dark all seem to be about using the bathroom, and I'm sure you don't want to hear about that!!

That is awful. That same thing happened to me only it only bit the inside of my mouth because I spit him right out once I felt a fuzzy feeling on my tongue. My heart goes out to Robbie. I pray that he continues to get better.

I generally check something like that open container that has been sitting around with a liquid in it just in case a fly or something has not settled in there and drowned. I would hate to swallow a fly but would never think of swallowing a spider it must have been awful to be bitten while it was going down. It could have been fatal too. I guess someone learned a valuable lesson the hard way and will never do that again. I remember when I was a child, my dad was doing some landscaping for this nice couple and I happened to be there and she invited us in for tea. As I got down to the bottom of the cup, as I was draining the last mouthful there was a drowned housefly I saw was at the very bottom and I was lucky I saw it and did not drink it. I can still see that fly slowly come into view in my memory and will remember it in detail for the rest of my life. The lady asked if I wanted some more and I politely declined, I do not know why I did not tell her about the fly. The worst things that have happened to me when I did not turn on the light when I should are the usual stubbed toes and missing the toilet bowl when up for a midnight pee.

im glad your son is ok,thats the main thing,i remember when i was younger i had a drink of coke and all the lights were off,i hate the light ,anyway i took a drink and swallowed a fly, lucky me they dont bite, well i think it was a fly,and i felt so sick i threw up,another time i had a drink of coke n their was a fly which had landed into my drink,i felt something as i took a sip and spat it out, then i turn the light on and what do i see?A FLY,their i go again (runs to the bathroom to throw up. now i always have the lights on while im eating or drink and i look everytime, but i never see anything in my coke anymore, so i guess the flies liked the dark and also liked coke lol.. ewwwww anyway sorry to hear about what happened to your son,he's very lucky hes ok now...

Yikes and ewwwwww! I am glad your son is alright. My kids leave a cup of water by their beds too. I guess I should just take the cups out of their rooms after they drink before bed.

Always spit! I have done this on numerous occasions when drinking coffee on the back deck. I go in the house to answer the phone or something adn come out for a big gulp of warm coffee and there it is, a nasty fly tring to steal my coffee. I have learned to cover the cup, carry it with me, or spit the intruder out. I feel for your son. I hope things are alright now. It sounds to me like a really bad spider bite!

I do! and it was thesame as your son only that I have swallowed a cockroached...YAAAAKKKSSS! I was so sleepy that time after a late night work, I felt so thirsty that I took a glass which was on the table together with a pitcher of water, though the glass was alluminum made, so I can't see what was inside unless I look at it. So to cut the YAKKKKY story short, I filled the glass with water and drink it immediately. Only a little water I have drunk but this thing actually got to my throat all the way to my stomach. I have discover that it was a cockroach when a single foot was left at my tounge. I felt my stomach was trumbling that time and I lost all that I have eaten that day.....LOL

Just tripping over things and almost falling or stepping on one of the cats. Nothing quite as dramatic as swallowing a spider. Hope he's OK.

I have never swallowed a bug, but I am now cautious. During the summer months, I kept seeing these little fruit flies hanging around. I usually would have a cup of something to drink by my bedside as well. One night I had a cup of juice, I did not drink any of it during the night though, but when I got up and looked at the cup, one of those fruits flies was in it. I am so glad I did not decide to take a swig during the night. I had one of those little sippy cups that the children use, so I have now started putting my drink in that, and so far so good, nothing has gotten in my glass. I bet that was real creepy for your son, glad he is okay.

It's okay, here's a fun fact for you! We will all swallow on average about 8 bugs while sleeping in our life time. The only mishaps I've had because not turning the light on is spilling something, tripping, stepping on my cat(oops).
