Your Job and The Economy

Do you work at a job that is directly affected by this economy? Are you afraid everyday that you might laid off at any given moment? Or do you work in a job that is recession proof such as the medical field?

I am actually on disability right now, I don't think I will ever work again.

Are you going to be able to make this a permanent situation? I was just wondering.

I'm a stay at home dad so no the economy does not effect me or affect me. My wife is a travel nurse so she's pretty safe in the job market.

Even the lower echelons of the medical field can be affected by the economy, people like CNA's and even nurses for nursing homes and institutions can lose our if the census of their facility is low. Been there, done that. The economy is bad, so people will make stronger attempts to keep their loved ones home, and will put off surgery and non life threatening treatments. That being said, I will comment that I am in a pretty secure position, unless I abuse, neglect, or exploit my clients. If I show up and do the work I am asked to do, I am fine, in fact I may be able to go from part to full time. It pays as well as Retail, better than fast food, and it is a more gratifying job than either of those. I like being a helper.

This has been a trend I have seen for about ten years. One administrator at a nursing home said that at one point the only people who will be in nursing homes will be those with dementia so bad that people cannot keep them home. Everything else, families will try to cope with in a home based setting.

That can be really rough on a family. That is a sad thought. If things don't change I think by the time my generation is older we won't be able to afford nursing homes or assisted living. Social Security will likely be nearly gone, and now the stock market has taken so much of our retirment savings unless things get massivly better, our generation is in for a rough retirement, if we are even able to retire at all.

Wow, what you said about people holding off on getting surgeries in stuff is something I did not think of but I am sure is true. That is a very scarry thought. The state of this economy is so sad and scary on so many levels.

I've been at Headstart for 14 years. Several years ago my job was actually eliminated due to budget cuts, but I worked as a sub the following year before taking this lunch aide position at another school. Pay sucks...14 years in and only make $8.56 and hour. I desperately want to quit. Marsha

I hear you, but you know what they say anybody who has job in this economy is lucky. My husbands company lays some people off every 3 months or so. It is very scary. He thinks there will be another lay off in March. I hate constantly living in fear of him losing his job. We try to put as much money in savings as we can just in case that day comes. We always feel kind of bad every time he does not get laid off too, because that means other people have been, this country is in a sad state of affairs.

My job is not recession proof, in fact my job almost depends on a good economy. If people don't use our services the company does badly and when a company does badly people lose their jobs. So unless consumer confidence starts to go up and people are not afraid to spend some money I have a very good chance of losing my job. I worry every day believe me.

Actually I work in the medical field. 2 supervisors in my unit were dismissed and they say it was due to downsizing. So, I am not 100 percent confident my position is secure. 80 percent maybe, since I am a continuous care hospice nurse. If they close our positions, then the company will close. Plus, we are raking in overtime, something that wasn't given to us in the past. Right now I am taking advantage of that wonderful blessing. I love my job!! Hopefully the economy will stabilize and the layoffs will decrease. People need their jobs now more than ever. Finding a job is difficult at this time. So, if you are fortunate to have one....you are indeed blessed.

I don't have a job at all. I think if I were to look for a job right now, it would be difficult to find one. I'm lucky that my husband is in the education field and that is hopefully not likely to be affected by the recession.
