Uh, Star Wars vs. Trekkies?

I've heard there are usually one or the other - Star Wars fans, or Star Trek fans. Supposedly, one cannot be both. Yeah, I'm being melodramatic. I'm not a huge fan of any of the movies, though if I had to choose it would be Star Wars. There is a new Star Trek movie (from JJ Abrams, creator of LOST and Alias) coming out, and I'm wondering about all the people who will show up in their Trekkie outfits. I remember when George Lucas started making more Star War movies, fans would line up in all different costumes of characters in those movies. Where does your allegiance lie? Star Wars or Star Trek? Know anyone who goes to those movies in outfits? Are you one of them? There is no shame!

Well, I love both but I am not an obsessive fan, just someone who enjoys the movies and shows.

How many Star Trek TV shows have there been? I know of two, but there have been more I think. One had Whoopi Goldberg.

Star Wars, but only the first movie. Star Trek, not really. I never like it and I didn't understand how people can watch this boring serial. I am not going to see Star Trek....

The first move may seems slow now, but at least I could understand the action... In new Star Wars nobody is able to translate English to English....

Yes, it is the only Star Trek we have, but that isn't the reason it is my favorite, it is the story line that says, we need all the wildlife, we can't hunt to extinction..

I am a Trek fan (TOG). If I had a budget, I'd dress in costume. Believe it or not, I am married with kids and see the good in both "worlds". As as Trek fan, or Trekker, if you look past the surface, the story lines are always for peace, understanding and sometimes an environmental angle to the show. You don't need to watch the shows in order to enjoy the episode. The main message of Star Trek that I see is hope. Hope that things will be better. Yes, I plan to see the new movie. Have you seen "Skylar/Gabriel" as Young Spock?!?!?!

I like both. I am not a fanatic, though. And I never went to watch either in any special costume. MY allegiance? I guess to both and to none. I wouldn't choose because I can't. They were both great for their time and are classics now. That's about it for me :)

My daughter's boyfriend is a big Star Wars fan. I don't know if he likes Star Trek, but he does have all kinds of Star Wars posters and toys that he's collected since he was very young. When a new Star Wars movie came out, he had her watch all the Star Wars movies in order from the first one that came out so she'd be ready to see the new one. He has a daughter from his first marriage that he named Leia.

Well I've actually been a fan of both, having grown up watching all the original 78 episodes of the Star Trek series. Though not fanatical. I have one friend who really IS a die-hard Trekkie, can recite the entire script/dialogue of all 78 original shows and used to go to the Trekkie conventions. As for me though, while I do love both, I think I'm more a Star Wars fan....I just love the whole idea of "The Force" thing...may the force be with you Uh...I do however do a great Live and Prosper Spock greeting..heehee

I can't do the greeting! And it vexes me (I put the vex in for Transdisc). My mom and sister can do it, but I sit alone, unable to properly tell people to live long and prosper.

I grew up as a fan of both, as my parents were equal opportunity geeks. They pretty much watched any sci-fi that they could. :) I do love Star Wars a lot more, though, but it's probably because I've seen those more consistently. There are TONS of Star Trek episodes I've never seen, and a few of the movies also. Of course, I have written a paper on Star Trek, and not one on Star Wars. :) And no, I've never dressed up like the characters from either, but I did own a few toy lightsabers. And I collect Star Wars toys. :)

I've seen the three older movies. They used to come on TV all the time when I was a teenager. I've not seen any of the new Star War prequels. I don't really have any interest in them.

Hi AmbiePam, I think I prefer Star Trek myself as as a child it was on as a series each week whereas Star Wars are just films that you see over and over. Both are okay. I am not that into them though but do watch as my son has started taking an interest as has his own light sabre now LOL. Huggles. Ellie :D

I suppose that since I'm not into either of them in a big way then I like them both. I will watch them on the television if there is nothnig else on, but I wouldn't go to the cinema to watch either of them.

I would have to say pro star wars all the way. That's not to say I didn't enjoy some star trek stuff. I used to watch TNG a fair bit and liked that cast. Shatner really ruined the classics for me, even more so as he started to stray from doing just star trek. But I think before the end of days we're going to have to have some challenge issued between the trekkies and the star war fans to see which has the supremacy... Maybe have a brand new movie from each series premiere at the same theatre and see what happens...

The Crew Of Star Trek - The Captain And Crew Of The Star Ship Enterprise
My country had only got television in the 1970's so you can imagine that we were watching a lot of old stuff that the real world had seen years ago.In any case that was when I got hooked on the original Star Trek series with William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and co-starring the inimitable Leonard Nimoy as the pointy eared half Earthling half Vulcan Mr. Spock. For me it will always be Star Trek, the original Star Trek. When Captain Kirk and his crew "Boldly went where no one did before" Errrr.........I am sure that I did not get that quite right!!LOL!!

with star trek, if I'm honest, I only really enjoyed The Next Generation. which I loved. none of the other series really cut it with me. Star Wars, for all it's flaws, I adore. I even have 3 lightsabers.

I love Star Wars I have never been able to stand Star Trek it is sooo boring! I flip the channel immediately if it eve comes on. I have never gone to the movies or seen anyone go to the movies in an outfit that would be just a little bit silly and I think uncomfortable.

I've worn Star Trek inspired outfits at some occasions. Though I like both Star Trek (TOS/TNG/VOY/ENT - I hated DS9) and I also like Star Wars (the old movies are the best - Jar Jar sux). It's just a matter of having fun, so if people go to see a movie dressed up like the characters of the movie... sure, why not. It's fun! Life's too short to spend time worring what people think. About the allegiance thing... I think it's a matter of fanatism, and a way for fans to distanciate from other fans and their way to prove how loyal they are to the subject. It's cute... silly but cute.
