2 weeks after surgery for Taj

Well, its been 2 weeks today since Taj had his teeth pulled. He is eating wet food eagerly, still looking for the baby food tho. I have even seen him mouthing kibbles! I think he actually ate the kibbles he was mouthing! He's still wanting to be alone with me in my front room that I keep cats out of, well, except for Taj. So, to update, Taj is doing very well, he seems to be fully recovered from his surgery. Got a note from my vet, who says he's a cool cat - and he is!

It's good to hear he's recovering well. You feel so ssorry for them because you can't explain that you did it for their own good. All you can do is give him heaps of extra love and cuddles and remember that cats are tough and bounce back quickly!

I'm not keeping the others from him. He wants in the front room with me, but he does spend most of the day out of the room because I'm not in there.

That is great news about Taj's recovery. I bet before long after his gums heal more that he will be eating the kibbles just like he had a mouth full of teeth. I think it is cute that he is still looking for his baby food.

He really loves his baby food. Now he has to eat a whole can of food before the baby food comes out.

In other words the baby food is his treat now? What is his favorite type of baby food?

Fiona, Elic forgot to tell you WHY he has that name. In Beijing (so one of my students from there told me), cats who have 4 white paws are called Tah Shueh which means "Walks In Snow." Taj is a 4-white-booties (with the rest of his fur, mostly, being yellow-stripey) kitty. And Elic's right. He IS a really cool kitty. I LOVE that sweet yella fella! Maggiepie

It is good to hear that Taj is fully recovered. Sometimes when the pets get sick, we always worry about them. They are like our kids, don't you agree? :)

So glad to hear this great news. It's awful when our pets are unwell. My own goats are stuck under the house following a horrific hail storm last night. I can't coax them out....poor little mites. They've been filling their bellies these last few weeks so they are not hungry. I guess they'll come out when they need to eat or drink. Give Taj a cuddle from me. I hope he continues to do this well.

Its worth every penny of that $700+ for the surgery to get him feeling so good! I haven't been to the other vet in almost 3 weeks!

That's good news. His gums should toughen up to enable him to eventually munch the kibble. (I once witnessed a man chomp away at a raw celery stalk just days after he had all his teeth out.)

ewww, but then again, I don't like celery! Yeah, mouths heal pretty fast! Already his look pretty in pink instead of raw and red!

A couple more weeks out and you'd hardly know he ever had surgery - except he doesn't have any teeth! He's doing GREAT!

Does he look any differently or hold his mouth differently?

Hurrah! That means he's a healthy and happy fellow! Maybe you can feed him some kibbles moistened with broth once in a while so he can enjoy them more often. You don't want too many sitting wet because they get "funky" after a bit. It's great that he's doing so well.

I did try that earlier this year, when I ran outta wet food, was broke and we had some chicken in the freezer. I have been told by other cat people that have had this done, that their cats eventually get back to eating some kibbles, but you know they aren't going to give up the wet food if they don't have to!

He was sitting right next to me when I read your letter and reached down and gave him a pet! He's a happier boy now, tho he's still grumpy a bit, but then he always has been when he didn't get his way!

I saw a few of these thread go by but I haven't caught up with my lot for a long time. I have over 230 threads in waiting and will probably whittle that number down a bit as i go over the subjects again just so I can reply to a decent number. I do read the subjects before passing them to the to do file so I am glad to hear Taj is doing well. My cat's prefer to chew so I don't know how they would handle that situation. Even with the canned food they all but ignore pate and love the chunky varieties they can sink their teeth into.

I've been feeding him the "savory shreds" and he's doing just fine with it. I now have 2 other cats with problems, just not as severe as Taj's and they still have their teeth.

Tony loves those usually. He's gotten bored with them lately so I've been getting tender slices and chunky varieties to get him interested again. He'll go for the same thing for months then refuse to eat it for a while when he gets bored with it but both he and Gizmo tend to turn up their noses at the pate types. They might take a taste but they live 90% or more of it on the plate until I have to get rid of it because it's going bad, dry and smelly. It's good to hear Taj can "chew" some now. My grandfather was a dog breeder years ago. When the older dogs had chewing problems he would use water, milk or raw egg to soak into the food and soften it. Egg not only added protein but it was good for their coat and they loved the taste. We even used it to get them to eat things they usually didn't like. with a good food processor you can grind the shell into the egg extra fine so they can eat it safely and it is a great boost of calcium. I don't know if any of this is helpful with cats but, your vet might agree to some of these tricks to help nutrition if Taj has trouble eating in the future.
