No doubt many of you have already heard about the major store closings circulating in emails. I do not and never will trust anything in an email, if it is news it will be on the television, in the newspapers etc. There are two many false emails circulating. This email was another scare tactic as anonymous emails are so good for. Most of the information about the stores are outdated according to Urban Legends, And many have already closed the stores in question that were meant to be closed so there is no reason not to buy the gift certificates if the stores still offer them. here is the list of the actual store closing such as circuit city, and Lane Bryant, Home Depot just to name a few and their present conditions. And remember you still can buy the gift cards if they issue them because they will honor them. http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/business/a/store_closings_2.htm Do you shop at any of the stores mentioned in the link and will you continue to buy gift certificates from them?

My sister told me about this a few weeks back.. If you buy gift cards use em fast!! It's no wonder the job situation around here is in shambles. She passed me the same list you have linked here as I am rereading the same info. Are you saying the email was a hoax?

the email makes it look like all the stores are closing and going bankrupt right now, the link I posted explained what really happened such as one place went bankrupt a year and a half ago that that makes it outdated info, there are no gift certificates left for that store, and, many of the stores closes some outlets and opened others. When you take big names like Home Dept and it says it is closing 150 stores that is nothing, except if it happened to be closing in your own area, countrywide there are thousands of home depot stores, then there are international stores here in canada a well. Basically the link is saying don't panic, just check out if those stores have been closing in your area if not you have nothing to worry about. stores do that all the time, they close stores that don't generate enough profit and open up else where.

Well thank you for clarifying this. The underlying point here is still that our economy sucks and it is affecting businesses everywhere. Whether one store or a few hundred, closing stores down is never a good sign. It is much like KMart who closed down a lot of their stores a few years back but KMart does still exist in other areas. I lost my job back then though and it was not a good time for me.

I shop at Lowe's and occasionally Fashion Bug seems to be the only two that I shop that that was mentioned that is close to where I live. I don't buy gift cards though from them. Only gift cards I get is ones I make online or is given to me. I guess I would like to hear it on the news or at the store itself before really believing. With emails it should be..believe only half what you see, half what you hear, and half what you feel.

I have always purchased gift certificates as gifts. It doesn't have to be exchanged at the store and several stores have hard to return policies. The stores that are closing in this area have big signs on them that they are closing.

I rarely use gift cards. I think that most of the people passing on these 'scare' e-mails are well intentioned. They are caring people who would like to save their friends and family from bad things. But I sure wish they would check the facts out first. I had just received a funny email from my uncle about these warning. It lists all the things he has been warned about like public toilets, poop in glue, and how prayers won't be answered unless you forward something to x number of people. I am one of those people who uses the delete key a lot.

There is definately some truth to it. There are many stores in jeopardy of closing, and if they do close the gift certificates will be usefull. I think gift cards from Walmart are fine, and also cards from Walgreens and CVS pharmacies, I would be weary of many other cards though.

I don't bother with gift cards. They really are impersonal gifts. If I get one I am at the store the next day to use it. You never know what will happen in this economy.

We still have a circuit city store opened here but we don't shot there often at all. As for home depot we have a credit card from there and we do shop there real often. As for gift cards I got one for my son in law before but he already used it from circuit city.

that is good, I think gift cards are great when they are from places you actually want to shop at.

This year I was going to save through a scheme that would give me vouchers at the end of the year. But then I heard rumours about there being a possible recession and quickly changed my mind and put the money in the bank instead and saved for christmas that way. I am pretty glad I did with the way things are going and I noticed that a lot of stores are now refusing to take the very gift vouchers I would have been saving for!

:/ this really sucks. My mom loves to go shopping at Bombay. She goes there often to buy her furnitures. However, that chain is still in business where I live in Canada althouth I noticed some discount. But We rarely buy gift certificate so I don't think this would be a problem for us.
