Since the price of gas is going down, would you consider purchasing an SUV?

November 29, 2008 Gas is going down each day, I paid $1.51 for a gallon of gas, I can’t remember when it was so low. SUV sales are increasing because the thought of packing everybody into one of those “Smart Cars” doesn’t seem very smart to me. I stepped off the curb the other day and stepped on one, whoops!. If gas stayed this low would you go get that H2 or H3 that you’ve been wanting?

Nope. There are only three of us, and in a few years our son will be leaving home. Besides, we can't afford an SUV anyway. We have a Nissan and like it very well.

Like that you call yourselves that? Sure. We have a Sentra. We like it very well also. It is really good on gas and plenty big enough for us.

I would never get a H2 or H3. I don't understand what i would need with a vehicle that was originally a military vehicle. The closest i have come to wanting an SUV is a Ford Explorer. The price of gas maybe going down, but the amount of pollution they omit is still high. There are environmentally friendly SUV's and thats what i want now. Well as soon as my car wears out which hopefully will not be for a few years atleast.

If the zombie apocalypse ever happens, then i might get one. Okay i think another point needs to be made in this topic, which i don't know if moon posted or if anyone else has posted it either. Yes the gas prices are going down, but there is nothing to stop them from going back up, so lets say someone goes out and buys the H2 and then in a month the gas prices skyrocket again, now not only can you not afford the price of gas, you can't afford the payment for the vehicle.

If I had a drivers license, I would buy an SUV. I cannot see those Smart Cars doing any good in packing the groceries or the shopping, since you would have to pay for the delivery of the groceries and the stuff you ordered like furniture, electronics, the new dish washer, stove, and you could not put the tent and the camping equipment in it if you wanted to do a little camping. I want room and if I would drive I would not go alone.

Well, last year we got a Chrysler Town & Country. It is beautiful, it has all the bells and whistles, etc. However, it only gets 17 mpg and when the gas was as expensive as it was it was just absolutely ridiculous. Now it is more manageable but still it sucks up gas so bad. I have a family of 6 so it is hard not to have a car this big. Once my kids are bigger I will definitely get a SUV for me and my husband will have his sedan like he has now or else a convertible. I do hope that the gas prices stay down now, $4.00 a gallon is just absolutely ridiculous! Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

No, I have a Jeep Liberty and we also have a Dodge Ram and both use a lot of gas. I would not want something that uses more gas than our current autos. If we lived where it didn't snow or maybe in a city that had good snow plowing, we would have cars.

We bought an SUV 2 years ago and didn't realize how bad the gas situation was going to be or how bad my husband's truck business was going to get. He had to park the truck and go to driving for someone else to pay for this thing. Thank goodness we have only one year to go. I think I'd be waiting to see how this economy was going to get before I got in debt for an SUV. They drink the gas, believe me. 18 miles an hour is not enough for on the road driving now days. I'm happy to see the gas low, but you never know what's going to happen with the oil market. It's too iffy right now.

It really depends how many people you regularly have to transport. My window faces onto the road and I see no end of SUVs and 4WDs go past with only one person (the driver) in. I console myself with the fact that they are paying the gas (and the extra road tax, here in the UK) and not me. The price of gas/petrol here has now dipped to below £1 a litre (I think it's now around 95p per litre). Doing a little sum with the current exchange rate and the US 'short' gallon, in your terms, that would be $5.39 a gallon. You may say that, in the US you need your cars more and do more mileage. The fact is that the average annual mileage per car is about 12,000 to 15,000 in both countries and that we in the UK are just as addicted to shopping at the out-of-town hypermarket as you do in the US. We do tend to have smaller and more economical cars, though, in spite of my rant about 4WDs and SUVs above. They are just as comfortable for four or five people as an SUV and can generally hold enough shopping for a family of four or five or more for a month (provided the whole family doesn't go shopping)!

The real issue though is how much longer we can go on putting falsely low prices on non-renewable resources. Be prepared for owning a horse and buggy and for using horse manure, methane or whatever for heating your house. We have become accustomed to having a convenient tin box for getting us from A to B and, especially, to tin tubes for taking us long distances on vacations or to see friends and family. At the moment, there is no suitable bio-fuel for planes, so they have to use fossil fuel. At least we could 'save' for those vacation trips by using more economical cars, using them less and using public transport and delivery services more.

I would love to have an SUV. My daughter used to have one and a few years ago traded it in and got a pickup and ever since wished she had not gotten rid of it. Just a month or two ago she traded her truck in and got a Ford Expedition. She got a great deal on it. I think we need to start looking. :)

Yeah, finally the price of gas is going down, but i dun think most ple will be going for Big family cars.. Instead, with the COE for small cars, being at just $2, alot of ple are opting for that.. lol =D Imagine the amount they can save on that, as compared to saving on gas for a SUV, i think a small car is much more worth it ^_^ hehe

Nope. Gas is lower. And that is fantastic. But the economy isn't rebounding. We will be driving our cars into the ground at this point. We need to save up for the rainy day. I am sure it is coming.

i would not at the moment cos i dun see the need of one. ask yourself what is the purpose of the car and most of the time who would be travelling in it. If you have the means to afford it and money isnt the issue, then go ahead and buy it if u like it. But if there is some constraints on budget, then you would have to do some planning and choose a car that meet your needs and at the same time does not bust your budget or add on unnecessary costs to maintaining it. Most pp have the ability to buy a car but faces difficulties in maintaining it like paying for petrol, parking, taxes and unplanned for expenses, like breakdown, accidents and traffic summons, parking fines etc

Sure, just like everyone else lets not conserve gas reserves, let's burn it all up until it is gone. Let the next generation worry about gas shortages, meanwhile we can pump all the money we can into countries that hate us and fund terrorism with our own money we give them because we don't want to drive small cars, it's un-American, we don't want to be like those sissy Europeans. The thing I cannot figure out is why God put all that American oil which we are entitled to under middle-eastern sand, I think he must have been playing a joke on us.

I guess it means neither, we seem to have a free will choice for now. At the end of the next generation when oil is obsolete they will look back on us and wonder what were we thinking as we look back on the polluting factories of the Industrial Revolution.

I bought a Toyota RAV last fall and with the gas spiking to an all time high this past summer it really helped me out with its great gas mileage. GO TOYOTA.

Hello gitfiddleplayer. No, I would not consider getting an SUV, regardless of how cheap gas gets. I think their time has come and gone. They simply use too much gas. I believe (and hope) that the wave of the future will involve the majority of people driving vehicles that use less gas as a way of conserving our resources. I used to think SUVs were cool, until I had to commute 30 minutes to and from work on an interstate. Driving a "regular car" amidst so many SUVs feels unsafe. It seems that SUV drivers are zipping in and out and don't seem to have any fear. I've never been inside of a Smart Car, but they do look small. I got up close to one of them and they do look like they would be fun to drive. But my husband is over 6 foot tall and I think he'd have trouble fitting in one!

I don't think it would be wise. These low gas prices are not going to last. Theyare lower becuse it is winter time, but mark my words once summer rolls back around again the gas prices are going to get outragous again. They are already going up. The best thing to do is stay with the more fuel efficient cars. Gas prices are too unstable.

If I have the money I would love to buy an SUV or bigger cars. The price of gas may not be the major reason why a person would buy a car but it is one big factor to consider. It is very impractical to buy big cars if the price of gas is very high.

Even if I do have the money...I won't. I'd probably buy a Toyota Prius any Hybrid for that matter. Its eco-friendly. And it'll save me money.

No way. I love my Honda Accord and I have no desire to go back to an SUV. I got rid of my SUV in 2005, though. That was after I was spending 900 dollars a month on gas. No joke. I don't trust the oil market enough to consider buying an SUV. Plus, I do think that people should try to be a little more mindful of how much gas they're using. I can feel good about driving my Accord because it's a ULEV (Ultral Low Emission Vehicle) and it gets about 35 MPG highway. If I drove an SUV, I would be paying more for gas. Why pay more if you don't have to? I pay about 20 dollars to fill up right now, which is awesome. I don't know how long it will last, though. I was watching on the news recently how one of the oil providers was cutting the amount of oil they supply in order to try to raise the price of oil. It backfired, but it still goes to show that oil producers are in it to make as much money as possible. Who wants to trust that? On the news here a few days ago, they were talking about people who have traded in their SUV's for smaller cars and are regretting the switch now that they are driving on the slick and icy winter roads, but I have had no problems with my smaller cars in the winter time. You just have to be careful. Besides, I have seen plenty of trucks and SUV's in ditches on bad weather days and I just drove on by in my little Accord.

I want an SUV! I've never driven one before though. I'm kind of scared to drive a big car even though you can see everything a lot better I think. I don't know if I'd buy one just because the gas prices are going down though. They might go up eventually and then I'd be stuck with a gas guzzler :( I'll stick to a smaller car, not necessarily those smart4two cars. Haha - vanonas www.thelendingstory.com
