I would like your help please. As part of a little diversion for myself I am trying to find some popular short stories. Anything from children's to adult. But nothing that takes more than 10 minutes to read aloud. Are there any stories that I absolutely MUST have. All contributions will be gratefully received. Just let me have the title and author and I will find the stories myself.

The Loaded Dog by Henry Lawson. My mother used to read this to us kids we we were young, and had us in fits no matter how many times we heard it. I read it at a musical "workshop" presentation I did on Henry Lawson at a National Folf Festival to adults, and had them rolling in the aisles. I read it again recently to my partner, and she loved it. It's part of a huge body of work by Lawson, much of which would fit your time limits, much of it very funny, some very serious. Lash

Now that I have found it and read it, I realise that this is an old joke that I have known for years. If this is the origin then it is a very worthy addition to my little anthology.

Umm, Around what age group are we talking about? They are alot of short cute stories for the little ones just starting to read. But it would help to have a age group so it makes it easier to suggest appropriate stories. I am sure an older child wouldn't be interested in See Spot Run..lol

the first thing that comes to my mind is that of the hare and the tortoise. The hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have never yet been beaten," said he, "when I put forth my full speed. I challenge anyone here to race with me." The tortoise said quietly, "I accept your challenge." "That is a good joke," said the hare. "I could dance around you all the way." "Keep your boasting until you've beaten," answered the tortoise. "Shall we race?" So a course was fixed and a start was made. The hare darted almost out of sight at once, but soon stopped and, to show his contempt for the tortoise, lay down to have a nap. The tortoise plodded on and plodded on, and when the hare awoke from his nap, he saw the tortoise nearing the finish line, and he could not catch up in time to save the race. Plodding wins the rac

Look for anything by Mem Fox. The illustrations in her stories are wonderful as are the stories themselves. Try Possum Magic, Koala Lou and Guess What? The latter is my all time favourite children's book.

Hi p1kef1sh, One that comes to my mind is, The Gift Of The Magi, by O Henry. It's a Christmas classic, and is considered a short story. The entire thing is available to read online, of course. It may take a bit longer than ten minutes to read, but it's well worth it in my opinion. Happy reading. Take care.

There is a collection of short stories by American authors called, "The American Short Story." It's edited by Thomas K. Parkes and published by Galahad Books, New York. There are many good stories and authors in it.

Yes, why not try Aesops Fables. They are great stories with just the right lenght. They also have themese and morals behind each story. Anyone of any age should pick up and read it as it can all teach us something and keep us grounded!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle Can't You Sleep Little Bear, Martin Waddle and Barbara Firth Guess How Much I Love You, Sam Mcbratney and Anita Jeram. They're three of my favourites and I'd love a laugh. Youngest wants The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Judith Kerr Aliens Love Underpants, Claire Freedman and Ben Cort Hope to have a laugh listening to these.
