Why do people decorate their bathrooms to be like the ocean?

See, normally I would think, of course people make their bathrooms nautical themed. Why not? It's obvious. Everyone does it. It's perfectly logical. I just realized, "But why?" What does emptying one's bladder and bowels have to do with the ocean? Is it the fact that the sea is salty.. like urine? I don't even think most people know urine is salty, anyway. I mean, I assume it's the water. It's also supposed to be relaxing. But loads of people feel the opposite of relaxing when they're in their bathing suit at the beach, but hey! If you want an oceanic bathroom, have an oceanic bathroom.

I have my bathroom decorated with seashells and a beach theme. I decorated my bathroom that way because all my life I lived near the beach. When I got married, I moved away. I became extremely home sick and unfortuntely I couldn't just move near the beach. So away to feel better was to decorate my home with seashells. Now I have seashells everywhere. Why I added this theme in the bathroom was primarily because it was easy. There are tons of bathroom accessories that are seashell themed so to do so was so easy. Now because I live in and apartment the bathroom was already tiled and painted. It just worked out the the tile was baby blue which went up half of the wall and the upper half was beige/ cream color like the sand. :-D I am into interior decorating so I guess the look did affect that the seashell them went into that bathroom.

I guess that people prefer ocean themes for their bathroom so that they can relax. One associates sea with sun and sunbathing and swimming in the sun. © ronaldinu 2008

Hi Sheepie, Well that is common that people decorate their bathroom oceanic, but I haven't. Have pale peach and aquamarine, mushroom colour. Tamara

I'm sure it has more to do with the tub full of water than the toilet bowl, though!

lol.it seems to be perfectly logical.i would want my bathroom to be cosy and comfortable, not like an ocean.lol though my son would prefer that.he can go anywhere and pee in this vast ocean and i wouldnt yell at him for making bathroom dirty.

I don't think it has TOO much to do with bowels and bladders ... mind you, I'm sure some naughty people DO pee in the bath. It's probably more to do with bathing and showering, and getting that feeling of being at the beach. I have one nautical bathroom, and one not. Something for everyone!

Actually, I think the proper question should be why do people decorate their bathrooms at all? I put the things I need in there, like soap, shampoo and toilet paper. I'd rather not sit in there looking around the room admiring the scenery. Just do my business and get out

I'm guessing because of the water. They like to pretend they are in the ocean taking a bath? maybe
