What kind of different excuses do you use to skip your office?

All those who are working amongst us sometimes require leave to dispose of our private work or to attend some social ceremonies. Sometimes it so happens that we are not granted leave due to exigencies of work by our boss(es) at our work place. However, our requirements of taking leave may be very pressing, which our superiors may not appreciate. So if you are working and on requesting you are not allowed to go on even a day’s leave and the next day you do not want to go to the office, what different kind of excuses do you use to skip the office? It may be illness of self or spouse or kids and may be some urgent work. Do you use any different excuse, other than the normal ones, which I have mentioned? The other day, I read in a newspaper that a man told his boss that he could not come to the office the previous day because his wife burnt all his clothes in the fit of anger? Would like to know from you people, what kind of novel ideas do you apply to take leave, specially when you know that it is not easy to get leave at your workplace? Thanks in advance for your responses.

On the contrary Deepak, I find excuses to go to office!! Now don't freak out! As you must be knowing, how often we call strikes here and my colleagues just swear by those bandhs. They kind of seem so happy and plan out things ahead. But for me, it's completely different scenario. I hate skipping office, i hate falling ill which makes me take leave and if I could I would even go on Holidays. You must be thinking how weird it is! But it's true and my boss reminds me repeatedly NOT TO come to work in bandhs and that I must take leave to get charged up and stuffs like that. Coming to excuses, I remember my friend once took leave on grounds of his mother's delivery date!! His boss thought he was playing some kind of pranks! But he didnot lie. His mother was supposed to give birth from her second husband! BTW, do you? And how? Happy making excuses and have fun.

Thanks Deepak for the appreciation. I, for one, believe that the kind of person you are - you cannot really give excuses. You are most punctual and sincere in workplace so as in all other spheres. And see, that's the reason you are so much wanted in every department. Honesty, sincerity and good workmanship talk louder than words. Even when you were busy with some problems in the homefront you did manage to come office! That speaks volumes of your workmanship.

Now, I have to say - many Thanks for your kind words about me, I feel humbled. Yes, you are on the dot, when you say it is difficult for me to give excuses. Yes, I do agree with you that if I am punctual and committed to my work, specially in my office, it would definitely pay in the long run. In office, people will only recoganise/appreciate me only if I work hard and with due sincerity, otherwise they will just throw my out. I give due importance to my job/office and try to maintain the balance between my home affairs and office, to the extent possible, so that my better half and my bosses could remain happy with me.

I really appreciate your honesty and commitment towards your job. Sincere persons like you are needed everywhere to run the show smoothly. I'll not exaggerate, if I say my intentions also remain the same to attend the office, despite all odds. I only take leave, when it is absolutely necessary. If I can manage with 'late coming', I just attend my office and dispose of my work by reaching late. Normally, I do not need excuses to skip of my office, if I have to go on leave, I try to be true and transparent. However, if I find that I require leave urgently and it is not going to be granted easily. I just stay at home and ask my better half to phone my office informing them that I am unwell (when the message reaches my office about my illness, they do not press me to come to office). The excuse which you have mentioned sounds quite amazing to me, however you have added it was true.

Hello my friend dpk262006 Ji, Well, Thogh I am purely house-wife and always remained a house wife after my marriage, however, when I was a taecher at school, before my marriage, such a situation did warrant, when I had to lie for explaining, tthat I was late to join as my cycle was puncthured/traffic-jam, I took shelter from natural clameties. But I never believed to make someone felt sick, when they were not. Next face the music used to be my way of dealing the subject. Because, I even today believe, truth will alays be helpful. Lies will multiplymore lies only. May god bless you and have a great time.

I try not to skip work for whatever reasons. Usually, it is when one of my kids is not well and my husband can't stay home, I have to take off and then I tell the real reason. If it's a function I need to attend which I cannot miss, I tell the truth. lol..the trick I think is that I rarely ask permission for leave. I just state the fact that I am not coming on such and such a day for such and such a reason and will give it in writing if necessary.

The most recent leave that I took for a personal reason was for my wedding anniversary. And I didn't have much problems getting the leave because they know that I do not simply bunk work. I'd rather miss a social function (unless it is that of a close relative that I cannot avoid) than take leave from work....and everyone knows that.

I know you are very sincere and bold and you do not believe in making excuses, when the real story (reasons) can help you go on leave. I also believe, it is better to tell the truth rather than going for an excuses to avail unschduled leave. Thanks for joining and sharing.

What a wife! Hi Deepak!I do not have this problem;but I just want to share a joke with you-a person who was weak in English had to write a leave letter and he wrote it in the following manner."As I am suffering from my sister's marriage, I would like to take leave from --date to --date." [earlier he had learnt to write a letter when he had had fever.]

What a fantastic joke! I liked it very much. I can also tell you one - One fellow wrote, for applying for leave - "I have to go to cremation ground, I may not return, I may be granted half-a-day's leave" YOu are lucky, I think because you do not require to search 'excuses' for taking leave. You are your own Master, I believe, and you can take leave, as and when you feel like.....LOL!

LOL that sounds like a good excuse to me hehehehehe I try not to make many excuses because the more I lie the less I remember what I told LOL usually I tell them I can't come. I have learned that we are the ones trying to explain all the reasons why we can't go to work and often they don't really need them or want them. Humans have a tendency of over explaining:) I sometimes comment on why I can't go, or if I'm calling the same day for some emergency I might mention it. But often I just say that I need that day off, without explaining why. It has worked so far, but then again I don't do it that often.

It is good that you do not need to use 'excuses' to skip office and your bosses know that you will take leave only when required. It was just an idea for a discussion, I know all here are very honest and true to their jobs etc.

No, I do skip sometimes. I just don't give an excuse. I used to over explain before. And then after hearing myself and some other colleagues trying to explain something to the ones that really didn't want to loose time to listen to it all I started skipping the explaining and keeping it simple: I can't come next tuesday. Or, I can't go to work today. I don't abuse it, but I do take my days , sometimes just because I do need a break. I'm not sick, but I really need a break. It does help that I do have sick days accumulated. I have still 23 days that I can take any time until June 2009. I intend to use many of them because the rumor is starting next year if we don't use them all, then we go back to zero in September.

Well the usual excuses will work ,I ma sick ,I have an emergency etc .Luckily at my work place we are given about 15 days casual leaf and 15 days sick leave. When you have exhasuted these days you may ask for emmergency days but I think these will come out of your pay.It seems however that our work situation is not as strict as yours.

You get sufficient number of leave/off days, therefore, I do not think, you would be required to use any excuse to skip your office. Our conditions are also not very strict in our office, we can go on leave, as and when needed, it was just a discussion for some fun. Thanks for sharing.

I have never needed to make an excuse to take time off work for social ceremonies. If I need to book a holiday I will book it well in advance. I’m not sure what sort of things you mean when you say social ceremonies? Generally people who want others to attend things like their wedding ceremony will book it on a weekend. If it’s a close friend they will give you advance notice. In this country (UK), I’ve never had a holiday rejected when I’ve booked it far enough in advance according to the company rules. Even where I work now, if I need to take a day off at short notice, even if I needed one tomorrow, if an emergency came up, my boss is flexible enough to allow me the time off. I think as a manager, I would be very suspicious if someone asked for a day off that was rejected as it was too short notice and then suddenly that person called in sick on that day. It’s happened in the past at other companies I’ve worked at and people have had disciplinary meetings over it. I guess things are different in India. When I was there last time I went on holiday with my cousin for 4 days and she’s a doctor and had booked her holiday months in advance. On the 3rd day of the holiday they rang up her home and said she needed to attend work the next day as they were short staffed, how stupid were they? Did they think we could change the airline schedule and get back a day earlier than scheduled when they knew we had gone out of state? Weirdos!

I have sorts of excuses, when I am going to be late. I will say that I was withdrawing a cash at the ATM and then my card was stucked in the machine and I have to report it to the bank guard but then the bank guard don't know what to do so we waited for employees to arrived to solve my problem. Sometimes I do alibis like there was no public utility vehicle and there was a heavy traffic. When I planned to be absent my reason was that I have soreyes , there was a problem in the house, or some sort of emergency.

Hi Dpk, Before answering your question I just want to ask one thing to you? Do you want to help your dear friends by way of giving tips to them as, how can make excuses for skipping the office? Or do you want to learn more excuses to skip office? Fortunately my boss is very nice person so there was no necessity to telling lies for getting a leave. My colleagues are also cooperative as they know that my kids are small and I may take a leave anytime without prior notice. But most of the time I inform them if I have any problem.

Many thanks for wishing me!! LOL! There was no such intention to learn new ideas for skpping my office. It was just a discussion to see how others take leave, when their bosses do not want them to grant leave. I also have no problem, in skipping office, however, I see to it that my office work does not suffer, if I am on leave. Nice to know that you tell the true facts to take leave.

I think I should keep a track of the replies you get to this discussion because I have to learn to give excuses for getting my leave sanctioned. I have always told the truth to my boss. I have never tried making up stories just to get leave. Now for the past one month I have been trying to get my leave sanctioned because the year is coming to an end and our leave is not carried forward to next year. But my leave has not yet been sanctioned. I have now been told that I can take a few days leave next week but I am still doubtful about it.

Hi dpk! I personally haven't used any excuses to leave work that are odd ,but being in management,I have certainly heard a few.I had someone tell me once a dog chewed a hole in their tire.lol..I guess it's possible but I don't know. I had a girl that would call and tell me about once that she thought her husband was being unfaithful and just could not emotionally stand to come in until she hunted him down and found out. That one is a little more believable but it was often she was hunting him down.lol.Take care.

I would not think of making an excuse to get leave or take some time off from work. On the contrary my present job has had its times demanding a number of hours of work which i have gone about doing without a whimper. And since i am into this with a friend have given it my whole hearted effort. In return i have never been questioned anytime about my desire to take some time off for whatever reason. When ever i do need the break i give them the actual reason and go about it.

In the past I have received a lot of unique excuses from employees that I supervised, they ranged from my dog buried my car keys in the backyard, which is the adult version of my dog ate my homework, to I can't come in tomorrow, I will be busy planning an good illness that will last through the weekend. On the other hand, I just simply tell the truth, I'm burned out and am taking a day for myself unless you'd rather I quit and let you tow the whole load. It has never failed me yet.

We are required to call the office two hours before our shift to let them know that we cannot come to work. There was a time when we were in my cousin's wedding and I have to work three hours from that time, I called my boss with the help of my cousins that there is a fire in our neighborhood. Everybody is screaming to make it realistic. I told my boss that we are all packing up our things. It worked. :D

Mmmmm... interesting! I'm actually a workaholic and I love to work, but when the lazy bug bits me, my brain churns a lot of excuses that I actually used. Here are just some of them: 1. "I failed to pay our electric bill for three months and I needed to settle it with the power company else we won't have electricity for a few days." 2. "My bed was infested with ants, and when I woke up, my face was all swollen because of the bites. I couldn't even open my eyes." 3. "I had to rush my puppy to the vet. I think he swallowed a chocolate bar." 4. "My uncle arrived from the States. I had to pick him at the airport and show him aroun. He has not been home for ten years." 5. "I have diarrhea." 6. "My doctor says I have arthritis and I have to rest my hand for a day." I know they're lame. But some of them were actually true, most I just made up. I actually got very good at making excuses that my friends would text me if they don't want to go to work and ask what their excuse this time will be. Not that I'm proud of it, but sometimes we gotta rest, you know. If our bosses will just grant our leaves, then there won't be a need for us to fabricate stories.

I'll tell the truth because when I tell a lie my face will sell me. In my opinion whatever one lie can't be used frenquently otherwise no one will believe you again. That will be a pity. In fact more and more bosses are humanistic. After all they have a family, too. I like to serve in these type companies.
