Do you think that people don't understand therapy?

I know that a lot of people who go to see a therapist, or to go see Dr Phil, expect this normal human being to completely turn his or her life around at the wave of a magic wand and by spending a few bucks on the visits. But it's just not true. Nobody can make you happy, these people can only do so much to open your eyes. I don't think most people really get that. A lot of people resent psychiatrists because of this, because they don't really understand what they're really meant for I think that this lack of understanding is what really makes psychiatrists have to prescribe drugs for people who don't really need it, because the patient is not cooperating and is not willing to fight for all they're worth to change his or her life around.

I think that some people expect their therapist to solve their problems ("Here are my problems, please fix them for me") but that is not the way it works. Sometimes it can be tempting to let go of the responbility and ask someone else to take over, but unless you are very ill, I don't think that is the solution. I personally don't expect my therapist to find the answers for me, I expect him to ask the right questions so that I can find my own answers.

It's not entirely their fault, you know. For decades now, we've been bombarded by the media and told what perfect people are like and how to be happy. The television, magazines, newspapers, movies and radio all bray at us that buying this thing will change our lives, that we are not attractive if we're not a size 0, men have to have huge and grotesque muscles to be sexy, etc. No wonder people are impatient with therapy, this is the age of instant gratification. If there's something wrong in your life, go buy product X and it will immediately get better! After all, Paris Hilton has it and look how rich and happy she is! I think this economy is going to put the lie to a lot of that and it's way past time for it. I hope the lessons stay positive and improve the country. A lot of therapists might be out of business if it plays out like I hope it will.

Earlier there was one view that those who go to psychiatrists are mad, only those people need a psychiatrist, at least now common people who are stressed also visit and that label is not there. But yes it is a common tendency that we expect miracles from psychiatrist which is wrong.

some people donot understand that the doctors have their own limitations.Limitations due to patients inability to understand situation, limitations of context eg going to psychiatrist.they consider them as gods and expect them to perform a miracle.but this is not at all true.this leads to disatisfaction.

I think some people don't have enough will power in them to change. In this situation they might need to see a psychiatrist to help them think more positively to help in changing something in their life. People need to realize that it takes a lot of time to change and if they're not patient then they probably can't be helped.

I think that most people want the doctor to tell them that they are correct for feeling and acting the way they have been. In other words, they want an advocate. They have no idea about the personal work that will need to be done on their own part. They want change. But not having to change. I agree.
