Do you still sent or receive greeting cards for christmas and new year?

Whn I was in school the beginning of december was a busy time for me,for I had to draw up a list of friends and relatives, to whom I should sent christmas cards, followed by the actual task of going to the shop and buying good cards, then sending them, after filling them up with loving messages, and affixing stamps. This was followed by the moments of waiting passionately for the arrival of the postman, with cards that my kith and kin had sent me,in turn......... But today this system has become outdated and is replaced by ecards and SMS.Do you still receive cards by post or via emails? Which do you prefer to sent this christmas and why?

In the past I was used to send Christmas cards by post to my good friends. And I won't miss it. When the internet is available, I become to be lazier. I like to send E-cards much more because it costs nothing. And most of all, I don't have to use a pen to write down something and go to the post office to send it. My friends can receive my E-cards at once. I can even set a fixed time to send out my E-cards. But I still receive Christmas cards by post from a few of my good friends. And actually a Christmas gift is on the way:) I love China

Hi Youless......Yes sending ecards is easier and less time consuming, especially for lazy people like you and me.........But receiving greeting cards by mail ,has a more personal touch, and are special to me.....Best of luck for your mysterious christmas gift which is on its way.I hope its something which you can share with me too.....

It stinks, but I don't send or receive Christmas cards anymore. I used to send maybe 10 or 20 - but I've either lost touch or just changed over to emails and ecard greetings. I remember when I was much younger, our family used to get stacks and stacks of holiday greetings cards. We used to use them the next year as gift tags! We'd make little ornaments out of them too. I especially loved getting the "Family Photo" cards - some were the only way I'd see the senders each year! I'm surprised Hallmark and companies like that haven't lost a lot of business - if it weren't for the bazillion holiday and special event TV specials that Hallamrk always produces/sponsors...

Sadly No.But I send Xmas and New year cards to the sisters of the school where my daughter is studying.I feel that the SMS and email greetings are really insulting in certain places and people.

Hi Rose, You are right dear, now people are interested to send e-card and sms for wishing their near and dear ones. The advantages are; it will reach quickly to the desired people and you will get the notification when the people seen the card. Secondly you can save your time also, no need to go to the shop and search the suitable cards and now the cost of the cards are also high. You can save the money for putting stamp and again you have to go to post office for purchasing stamp and posting the same etc. Finally you can send attractive animated cards with music by free of cost. But one thing is there, when we receive a card by post it will give immense pleasure that joy you won't get by receiving an e-card. By sending cards through post, we are writing the messages from our heart. We are sending New Year cards to our dear and near ones in our native place. There most of them are not using a computer.

Yes Sree...What you have said is true. The new way of greeting is less time consuming and less expensive. But they do lose the personal touch, that is seen when we go to the shop, chose cards, write some private and loving message inside, and then post it.... . And you know something, now a days its a big bother for people to go and buy cards and sent them physically. And I have noticed that most people do not bother to sent greeting cards to people who do not have a computer, saying they are out of this world, and not doing the "in" thing by having a PC at home.....!!!!Times are changing, and if we do not change with the times,we will become mis fits...........

Now people are busy and they don't have time for keeping the personal touch and depending much on the technology to ease the jobs. Yes dear, Time is changing and we are forced to change with the time. Best of luck and have a nice day.

It is very rarely that we either send or receive christmas cards. After reading your discussion I was trying to remember when was the last time I received a christmas card by post....and frankly could not remember. Now it is e cards and SMS. And I make it a point to phone my family on that day and personally wish them all over India. I have my nephews in Delhi and Bangalore and my cousins out of my city. Christmas is one day when I make a call to all of them.

It was fun adding these christmas cards to the decorations at home during the Christmas week. For the past few years I have not been celebrating either Diwali or Christmas so did not miss these cards so much. But this year both my kids are in the Christmas mood and are busy making plans of how to decorate the house next week. And I am missing the greeting cards to much as the table looked really colourful with the Diwali and Christmas cards all placed around.

Hi Mayka...Yes times are changing and we have to move with the times. This time I guess your kids will to make do with other decorations, for their christmas tree, which thankfully are abundant in the market now.but yes, those personal greeting cards will make their mark by their absence and we have to put up with it.Everybody is too busy and consider it a big bother to sent greeting cards... Any way wish you and your kids A HAPPY AND WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS,Mayka........

Hi mayka..sadly even I do not get many greeting cards by post these days. Most of my family and friends stick to ecards and SMS and telephone calls too.....But it was a treat in my younger days to wait patiently for the post man,and to receive greeting cards from him.I used to preserve them lovingly, and meticulously sent greeting cards to all the persons who had sent me greeting cards the previous year......But now I only get greeting cards from business establishments...(mostly a s reminder to me too, to visit them again next year.....)....

Sadly, I do not send or recieve any Christmas and New Year cards now. But like you, it was a tradition in our house to make a list of friends and relatives and go out and buy nice cards and send them with loving messages. Even my father who was very particular about this tradition has stopped now:( It's e-mails all the way noa.

Like you Rose, when I was younger I used to send out a lot of Christmas cards but then my priorities and financial situation changed. It is not cheap to buy Christmas cards as well as the stampt etc and in so many instances the cards are thrown out. That is a total waste as far as I am concerned. My partner and I do not send Christmas cards to our children. If we are going to see them for Christmas, then we give them their present and if not we post/mail it to them. We write a personal note to be included with the present instead. Those friends that we will be seeing within a couple of days of Christmas or who might spend part or all of Christmas Day with us will also receive a small gift from us. That too has a short personal handwritten note with the gift, so we do not send those friends cards. We do send cards to some good friends that we will not be seeing any time around Christmas but that would be limited to about 8 families. We do not send a card to my favourite brother and sister-in-law, as either we phone them or them telephone us on Christmas morning. Generally we take it in turns to phone and this year, being an "even numbered" year means that we phone them. For us it is about the personal aspect of giving. Yes there are some Christmas cards which have inspiring messages on them but those cards are also very expensive and we siomply cannot justify the cost. Even the cards that we send to friends are all hand made, although I do have to admit that my partner is the one who designs the cards and writes the verse etc. I am just told where to put the picture and ribbon or whatever else she wants on the cards. You see, my writing is not the best and some would say it is not all that legible either! I do not think that the giving/sending of Christmas Cards through the traditional method of the postal system is outdated. It is more a matter of economics. In our case for example, we have 36 family between us, i.e. children, sisters and brothers, mother plus nieces & nephews who are adults living independently. That is 36 different couples plus the 20 couples we are friendly with and will see either on Christmas Day or within a few days of it. Also those people we already post Christmas Cards to. In total it would be about 64 and if we were to send each of those families a Christmas Card, it would cost us $32 just for postage alone without the cost of the cards. Basic economics prevents us from sending out Christmas cards to everyone.

You just helped take me a trip down my memory lane. It was indeed different with paper greeting coming from all over the world and how I used bug my mom to buy me cards and then moved to my father to had posted them! I hardly get paper greetings nowadays. While my mailbox is being flooded with electronic wishes only a couple of friends and my sister send me real cards. And, I do send them back. Having said this, on birthdays I make sure to buy paper greetings for the people around me. That is so special and nostalgic. Wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

I remember those times when i would send my father and uncles christmas cards... because they work abroad... and i would eagerly wait for the ones they sent me... because for sure it will have money inside... But then... it has been years since i received a christmas card nor did i send one... friends and family living far away is like seconds away because of sms and cell phone calls... so that is what i do... don't know if i will ever send cards via mail in the future...

Yes I always do...sending greeting cards on christmas in fact I've sent already two of them to my family and and a friend in the Philippines and will be sending more this week. Me and my husband did likewise received season's greetings mostly from his family a couple of weeks ago and we're planning to send them ours this week. I also want to send some for my relatives in California, together when we will be sending cards for my husband's families. It's a nice thing sending greetings back and forth. In return, my family in the Philippines were sending us cards too and hopefully we have them soon. Even though there's no tangible gifts from anyone, sending and receiving christmas cards are some sort of expressing love and mostly it's feeling great when one is being remembered.

yah you are right not anymore, and i also get tired of sending cards to my friends and relatives, i just text them or mail them instead. I still do send them cards but through email, and they do the same thing too. Anyway it doesnt matter for me, what matter is they remember me and send me a mail or text.

Same here. We would draw up a list of people to whom we needed to send christmas cards. We would go card hunting in the first week of december. By stamps, write up the addresses, post it. Even the postman would wait around the christmas bring it around that time (extremely sweet around christmas for baksheesh- give you a big smile). We would wait for the cards to arrive, especially wait to receive the card sent by my uncle. He would always send us different and unique ones, musical and all. But those are long gone. No more card hunting. Now look out for websites to sent e-cards, this is easier and less time consuming. The time when we pick each card with good thought and wordings is long gone. I don't think it is going to come back again.

i use to receive a lot of greeting cards through mail when i was in high school since i also love to send some i usually spend time going to the mall and choosing among many cards in store. Card giving through postal mail started to cease when i entered college since most of us has already been introduced to the new technology. most of my friends preferred to write emails and send e-card during occasions instead of taking the hassle of going to the mall, writing a card and going to the post office. As much as i want to receive snail mails or postal mails i understand the pace of the new technology, and i even think its more practical, besides i'm also guilty of forgetting postal card greetings and instead use e-cards and other mms greetings

Hi Rose, I guess I'm a bit old-fashioned but I see nothing wrong with that. I still send Christmas cards to my friends, but only to those that I've been sending them to for many years. I've adopted the new ways for my younger friends. Blessings.

I remember growing up my parents received lots of Christmas cards. I know the main reason was because my mom was teacher and for every card they received they would save that address and it became a part of there yearly Christmas list. When I grew up I was disappointed my first Christmas on my own the card I got was from my parents. That was years ago. This year is fun because I signed up on a couple of forums I am on to send Christmas cards. We were split up to about 15 per group and we are sending cards. How fun it has been to receive cards from all over! My daughter of course is enjoying this as well. I still love Christmas cards! Great post by the way! ((HUGS)) Momma B
