Food or Cake?

We went to a birthday party today and it was a lunch party. We were all talking for a very long time and the host brought the birthday cake and the kid cut the cake and they started serving the cake to everybody. me and my husband were surprised to see this. We usually cut the cake after lunch so that people can eat it as dessert. If we order separate dessert, people will not eat cake or the ordered dessert. So we usually don't order dessert. After finishing lunch, we will cut the cake and serve it. Thats how we do everytime. But in our friend's place they first cut the cake, served it and kids didn't eat their lunch properly. which do you think is better, first cake and then food or first food and then cake???

I'm going to have to agree with you. I prefer that the cake is served after the meal especially if there are kids. My kids are the same way, they will not eat their lunch if cake is served first. Not only will it fill them up, they get very hyper with the sugar and would rather be playing.

As you said, they didn't let us eat and they became very hyper after eating the cake. After spending four hours in their house, we came back home, they were hungry and became cranky...

I think cake should be cut before lunch and served after lunch. Its because the table is usually empty and clean and people are there for the birthday party. So the first thing they should see is the birthday cake rather than food. So in my family we do it like this, cut the cake take photographs and then serve food, and after food we bring out the cake to serve to the guests. keep smiling

I agree with you. First food, and then birthday cake. That's the way we have always done it too. I have never heard of the way your friends did it, and I'm not sure that I can understand why anyone would want to do it that way. Food first, and then cake, so they will have eaten their lunches properly.

I just don't understand why they did it like this. They became our friends recently from my kids' school and we got the invitation from them. We just went to make more friends

there may be various points to look at it. I think what you say is really justified. but at our [place also, first cake is cut and eaten. then the lunch or dinner

i think that the food should be served first before the cake...Firstly because cakes are desserts, and we usually eat desserts after meals right? secondly it's because kids are like that...they will eat the things that they like, such as cakes, and after eating all the cake, they say that they're really full already and can't eat other stuffs anymore... that's why i think food should be served first, followed by cakes or desserts.

well, Im with you i do prefer food then cake. It is indeed add to do that kind of serving it does reminds me, when we visit to a place and we end up eating in a restaurant that we don't know the name, since we are all kind of hungry we ask the server that we go ahead to order then, before she ask every one what to they want i said that we're getting this kind of appetizer and then, the main order and we say it last the dessert. And quess what happen?lol....we are very worried why the food we order took so long to come out and finally it come, and they, serve it all at once. We are very shock! because we are all hungry we did not return the food but we manage to tell the management that it was wrong.lol. It was not good at all. Your friend might be glad if you tell her that next time the dessert would be serve last. Just an opinion but say it in a very nice way because some people is easily been offended.

I've always done the same as you: eat the lunch foods first then cut the cake as a dessert. I've never heard of having the cake first or just cake before. That is really strange. I still think having regular food is better first because sometimes people's stomachs can't handle being empty then eating something sweet. They should have something in their stomachs first before eating sweet desserts.

I think first food then cake is much better, but the children here always can't wait for the cake on my birthday party, hehe.

hi vidhyagowri! i have to agree that this is a bit unusual that cake is eaten first before the meal. probably because the kid (probably a spoiled kid) wants the cake first before the meal itself, and the parents (especially if the kid was a spoiled kid) happily obliged. however, i think this is not good, because the kids ate dessert first and probably didn't eat their real lunch well. and this is not good just for that moment, but it is not good for the rest of the kids' lives, because they were taught that dessert can go first before meals. and since kids love desserts more than real food, they were accidentally taught that real food is not a priority. this is bad because of possible malnutrition since kids would want sweets more.

I think food would be better. Cake has a lot of sugar that would make someone feel full after he or she ate that. They might not enjoy the other food.

The hunger grumpiness is the worst for my kids. They get all crazy and start to talk back. I can't stand it but I bear with it. My wife always keeps some sort of snack in her purse just for these types of situations.

Food first than cake for the kids. They need a balance to all that sugar. However, if it was me, I would vote cake every time. I love cake.

Well I'd probably serve lunch first since that makes more sense to me. But, I guess if its a child's birthday I can see them doing this. Kids have smaller stomachs and if filled up with lunch they wouldn't have room for birthday cake and ice cream. And this one day cake and icecream for lunch shouldn't be a bad thing.

i would also do it in the order you described. as the cake is the main centre piece that is all the children will want to eat. usually the food is there during the party then the cake is cut near the end so people can take a piece home with them in a party bag. happy mylotting

Food first then cake. I think it's more enjoyable in that order. That's kind of weird. That's how you also get kids to eat their food because they know that unless they've eaten all their food, there will be no dessert.
