http://www.snopes.com/photos/military/ussnewyork.asp Steel from the World Trade Center was shipped to Louisiana where it was melted down & made into the bow stem of an amphibious transport dock ship. It was built 12 miles north of New Orleans, Louisiana. It was christened on March 1, 2008 & will be commissioned in mid to late 2009 in New York. It will be docked out of Norfolk, Virginia. The crew will be made up of 360 Sailors and 3 Marines. Commander Curt Jones will be the Prospective Commanding Officer. It has 4 engines & will support amphibious assault, special operations, or expeditionary warfare missions throughout the first half of this century. Helicopters will take off & land from this ship. In 2002, New York Gov. George Pataki said, We're very proud that the twisted steel from the World Trade Center towers will soon be used to forge an even stronger national defense. The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combating terrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets the evil attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the courage and strength that New Yorkers showed. This ship will be almost 700 feet long & weighing in at around 25,000 tons when fully loaded. It will be able to run at approximately 25mph (22 knots). For my friends here in the USA, what are your thoughts on this ship???

I think it is great that they put the steel to good use this way. Thank you also for the link you have here. I do know if I had lost friends or family on Sept.11th I would feel so honored to have that ship out there working to keep us safe so hopefully nothing like this will ever happen again.

I think it is wonderful that they are putting the materials to use. I also like that they are doing it in a very respectful and patriotic way. It is also good what it will be used for. I think it is a great idea in a lot of ways. Who ever had this idea was very smart.

I know the men and women of the military who will be stationed on that ship will feel different than being on any other ship. This has truly brought a tear to my eye since I lost some friends/co-workers there. The memories of all those who lost their lives will live forever in our hearts.

I light a candle every year - I light a candle every year in memory of those who lost their lives on that terrible day & to thank God for those that were spared. As long as I live this day will be remembered!!!
I didn't know anyone who lost their life that terrible day. However, i do feel a connection to each & every one of them. I would think it would be a GREAT honor to serve on that ship. For as long as I live, I will remind people of that day. It is right up there as one of the worst days in my life!!!
