Giving up smoking has been seriously bad for my health......

Seriously, I am not joking. As of this minute I have gone, 3 days 14 hours and 21 minutes without a cigarette. I started off the first day on patches but decided from the second day to go cold turkey. I have been so ill I can not believe it, I have been bedridden for nearly two days and can hardly walk due to aching joints,I have been unable to eat since Sunday. I am so gutted because it is new years eve today and I had been invited to a party tonight and now I cannot go because I am just a mess. It is like a full dose of flu but I know it is not it is because of not having ciggies, my hubby gave up a few days before me and he had exactly the same so that must be what the chemicals in them do to a person, all I can say at this point is if I ever smoke again then I am stupid!! If anyone else is trying to quit smoking then good luck and I really hope you do not become as ill as I have been!!! Oh and Happy New Year to everyone!!!! xxxx

giving up smoking - Keep it up and be persistent, my dear friend. I wish you successful in the new year.
Happy New Year, dear gemini_rose. While being happy for your determination to give up smoking, I am so sorry that you are not feeling good after giving it up. But I am sure that you can do it together with your husband if you are persistent in your ambition. My mother used to smoke as well, but she was a light smoker and my mother succeeded in giving it up years ago and now my mother does not have any desire to smoke any more. Such is the case with my father-in-law, who is a success in giving up smoking. I have confidence in you both since you are aware of the harm smoking can bring us. Keep it up and be persistent, my dear friend. I wish you successful in the new year.

A happy 2009 to you and your husband ^_^ i bet this year would be much better sans the first- and second-hand smoke. I know this sounds sappy, but i hope it would do some help. My dad quit smoking 11 years ago, and he never experienced even a slight complication. I believe it's because he gave up smoking on December 8, 1997, in honor of Our Lady. I'm not sure if you have some sort of religion, but if you do, maybe you can do the same. My dad never craved for another stick since then, thanks to Whoever's watching over him.

Oh dear! You do sound as if you are having a hard time. I hope you feel well soon and are able to enjoy your New Year - even if not tonight. Just think how much better you will feel once all the poison is out of your body :¬) I wish you strength to get through this hard time. All the best for the New Year and may 2009 treat you well. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Once all the horrible symptoms wear off I'm sure you will feel much better and fitter. My hubby gave up a few years back and also went through certain aches and pains - the worst of which was a very sore throat ... but once that healed he was much healthier other than that he put on weight and developed IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). He also stopped suffering from chest infections every time he got a cold. Then he started smoking again (2 years later) and he is back to his usual weight, no longer suffers from chronic IBS and is once again getting the chest infections. Seems you can't win!!! Anyway good luck with not smoking Happy New Year Violetdreams

yes that is called withdrawals, and it is terrible to go through but once you get the nicotine cravings out of your system you will feel much better. It is very hard to go cold turkey that is why so many people fail at quitting but please please keep strong and you will get through this.

I'm so proud of you that you are trying this, and staying with it even though it is hard. Have you tried the gum that helps quit smoking? I don't know what it is like because I never smoked, but I imagine going cold turkey on any habit is extremely hard. But at least your husband is giving it up as well. You have a partner in all this misery (for now, hopefully you'll feel a lot healthier as time goes by).

thank you that means a lot to me, i am proud of me too, or i will be once I do not feel so ill! I have gone nearly four days now so I am going to continue cold turkey i mean to start using a nicotine product would be like taking a step back now.

I smoke like a freight train and would never give it up until I had to. I know it would cause me to gain wieght if I stopped and it would not be good for my health either.

poor thing.. and grats on yer few days without nicotine. keep it up! ive quit twice in my life when i had both of my girls.. and, thankfully, didnt experience what yer experiencing. i had no withdrawls whatsoever, didnt have any problems at all. was only slightly fidgety needing something to do with my hands.. and with a new baby to tend to, i didnt have difficulties finding something to do to keep myself busy. the only advice i can offer to shorten the length of yer suffering, is to try to flush yer system out. drink alot of fluids, plenty of vitamin C, exercise and get yerself sweating to work it out of yer system a little faster. i wish you luck hun. ;squishes;

I'm proud of you for making this change. I'm sorry you are feeling sick, but I'm not surprised. Quitting any addiction is bound to have physical symptoms from it. But in the long run you will feel much better I'm sure. And if you miss this New Year's Eve, look at it this way - you'll be around for many more of them in the future! Happy New Year, and keep up the good work.

Gee, Gemini, that sound terrible. If it's that bad, you may want to go on the patch again, at least for awhile--maybe go to a lower dose patch. I tried to quit last summer cold turkey, and I was a mess. Anyhow, whatever you decide, congratulations! I know that I need to try quitting again--and I plan to soon. BY that way, Happy New Year!

yes, sometimes stopping a habit suddenly makes us feel really sick. thats why most doctors say you should not do it continuously. it better to stop gradually. if you used to smoke a lot before.. just reduce it to half.. and divert by doing something else.. doing workout or running helps a lot when quitting smoking.. then limit to one or half per day and finally stop.. doing it suddenly cant make our body adjust itself... thank you happy newyear

That is probably what it is but I have done it now and should be over the worst of it so I am going to carry on with no help. I did not smoke much no, my hubby did but I did not.

I really hope that you persist in giving up smoking. It's a sign of withdrawal symptoms. You have to expect such things but you will be better soon. Remember that you are damaging your health if you continue to smoke.

And now that 5 days have passed since you posted this discussion, how is it going? I have quit smoking so many times and started again because of being sick and once I actually quit for 6 months and things didn't get much better, still not feeling good, and I started again. That was the last time I tried to quit. I know that I should try again but I have to admit I like my smokes. I don't smoke a whole lot, a pack lasts me about 2 1/2 days, but even that is too much. But I like smoking so if I were to quit again I think it would be really hard because I really don't want to quit, other than the money part. I have tried every single method there is to quit smoking, from cold turkey to the patch to hynosis and achupunture and pills. Nothing seemed to help me with the withdrawl symptoms except the patch. The patch did help me. It did make it a little bit easier. You might want to rethink using it. I hope you are successful in quitting, if that is what you really want, you should be able to do it. It is all in the head, determination. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Just hang in there, your body is getting rid of all the poison you've been feeding it. The pain will get better, try to exercise, even if it's just a very little each day, drink lots of water to flush out poisons and know that you are not alone, many people are going through what you are.

hi gemini, smoking is bad and it effects whole family and it is so nice u gave it up.. it is not smoking but may be.. your husband caught a virus and gave it to you, and it's just bad timing. Or maybe it's just your body coping with withdrawal and getting rid of all those toxins. Whatever is causing it, you will feel better and better now you've given up. Congratulations ... it's the hardest thing to do, but worth it. i hope u have not picked it again.. virus and smoking both.
