What are your three top proteins?

Ours are normally chicken, beef, and pork, in that order. But my husband and brother are "having a cow" over the beef prices. "Two steaks $14.99, we can't afford that!" Every so often one protein source gets too expensive, so you switch to another one. We eat beans once a week and my husband has cheese for lunch every day so he didn't want more beans or cheese. Fine, it never dawns on him to look at the prices of fish. So I told him to look at the fish, whiting at Price Chopper $1.99 a lb. So he went to Price Chopper and the heads, tails, fins, scales were still on, so by the time you took all that off, he didn't think that was a buy. Then he found cat fish for 50 cents a pound (lb American). He was soooo proud. It was fileted, too. No head, fins, tails, bones, scales, all pure catfish flesh. Problem solved and he found some ground beef (hamburger) that was cheap, too. I knew he could do it. He just had to put his brain into it and quit thinking we have to have beef all the time. I grew up with rabbit sometimes, venison sometimes, whatever we could afford. He never had any fish besides cans of tuna. So he never thinks of fish. What are your top three sources of protein? When one source gets too expensive, what do you do? Thanks and take care.

I guess because I grew up in a household where we ate fish, esp. this time of year, I take it for granted that people think about it. Thanks and take care.

Top sources of proteins? For us this time of year it is venison and chicken. Beans and fish tie for third with the rest of my family, but I eat peanut butter almost daily, so that is a main source for me.

Good Morning, writersedge....I am surprised that in your area the price of beef is so high! We are experiencing lower prices on beef, chicken and pork, due to the decrease in fuel prices/transport prices down! Any dairy is protein rich, so I like to make the pasta dishes like; lasagna & cannoli that use a lot of cottage cheese and cheese! I tend to seek out sales...and my favourite is Turkey, usually after the holidays, turkey goes on sale....Utility (which means that they are just aesthetically not pleasing--a broken wing, a missing drumstick) for 99 cents a pound! I find, the "sky is the limit" when it comes to the amount of things one can make with turkey! We eat a lot of fish, seafood...because of my proximity to the Pacific Ocean and often use it to replace beef in a lot of recipes, as we find seafood lasagne just as pleasing as beef lasagne! All lentils, & nuts are high in protein, too! Cheers!

Excellent list of proteins. They're telling us it is because soy went up, fertizer went up for the soy, flooding in the midwest, gas went up, etc. Thanks and take care.

I'm actually on this new "way of life" where I'm trying to keep my blood sugars in check (not diabetic, yet) and, hopefully, lose some weight. So, I keep track of everything that I eat and I realized that I my protein numbers are out of balance. And, protein helps to keep the sugar from spiking (one way or another). I, too, recently was looking for a good, everyday source of protein. We do a lot of chicken. I do eggs for breakfast when I can. And, we also do turkey, a lot of times ground. We actually don't do a lot of beef unless we are eating out. So, in looking for a good source of protein I thought that I was gonna have to really get into the beans and lentils thing. But, from reading the posts, I can achieve something by putting more fish in my diet. And, for me, this is not a problem. Thanks for opening up the topic.

Lentils are beans are great, just keep them to a time when you're not going anywhere, (lots of gas unless you know how to cook them better or unless your body processes them well). Fish are an excellent protein, but they recommend only once a week. Thanks and take care.

I always have the beef, chicken and fish in a week of groceries. I also have some cheese but I seldom have milk as I don't like it. So i guess am doing pretty good for my protien needs so far. Sometimes we buy tufo in a chineses restautrant in place of fish.

Sounds like a good bariety of protein. How do they prepare the tofu in the Chinese restaurants, do you know? I like it there, but not crazy about it when I do it. Thanks and take care.

That should have been variety, not bariety, sorry.

We eat lots of chickens and pork over beef. Around 7-8 times a week or even more. We rarely eat beef but if we does, we prefer steaks over any other dishes of beef. We also serve eggs on breakfast. Sometimes ham, hotdog, or even bacon. I'm getting hungry while typing this. hahaha

Oh how I WISH fish was inexpensive where I live but it's not :( I end up using canned fish of all different types in salads and recipes... better some of the nutrition that way than none at all. I do use shrimp fairly often, too, which is surprisingly cheaper than buying filets. My sources of protein are generally chicken, eggs, beans (I make a lot of crock pot soups and always include beans for the protein), pork, nuts... sorry, more than three on that list there LOL

That's OK, a lot of people gave me their top three plus a few more. I wish my husband ate eggs, I do, but they give him gas (even worse than the beans once a week). Also, I can't see him counting that as a substitute for meat. Thanks and take care.

Sounds like a good variety of protein. I wonder why your joints hurt with red meat. I have to eat red meat or I don't have enough red blood cells. Just goes to prove how varied human beings are, doesn't it? Thanks and take care

That gets complicated. I tend to have a problem eating a lot of animal proteins. But I love chicken and beef. More then chicken and beef though, I am a fan of dairy products! I love cheese and milk as good protein sources. We eat a lot of peanut butter as well. Right now we have only been eating venison. We had a deer given to us awhile back and have been eating that as our real meat solution. We eat a lot of cheese, milk, peanut butter, and beans as well. One advantage is I made some truly remarkable steaks the other day from the venison. They were fantastic!

I really love venison steak when my brother does it. You're lucky someone gave you some venison. I was given two cuts of it, one from one person and one from another before Christmas. So I've been lucky, too. All great choices of protein. Thanks for responding. Must be rough having trouble eating a lot of the animal proteins. Take care

One of the guys that my husband works with had a lot of permits (I think 25) this year. His family doesn't really like venison and that is way too much for a family of three to eat. So, he gave us the deer. We had to pay for processing, but it was still a good deal. It did make me miss real cold weather. We used to live in Michigan and when I was a kid and someone gave us a deer we would leave it frozen and then bring it in and place it in the bath tub to cut up. Here in Texas, it is way to warm for that and we had to pay for processing. Of course it was a lot easier! Anyway...we have been enjoying it. We were also given a moose roast and some moose and buffalo burger. I haven't cooked the roast yet, but we have tried both burgers...

I've had buffalo, but not moose. The sub-zero and the ice I wouldn't miss if I was in Texas, but it is too hot for me down there. Oh well. Thanks and take care.

Good idea to get veggies in there and exercise to create muscle to use the protein. Thanks for pointing that out. Congrats on joining Mylot. Please try to create 4 sentences, questions, etc. so that you can receive more $ at Mylot. Thanks and take care.
