I hate when I get the wrong mail delivered to my house. We have been living here over 6 months now and they still deliver mail to us that belongs to the previous people who lived here. How hard is it to fill out a change of address form?? I have to run to the post office today anyways, but usually it's such a big hassle I just want to toss it. Do you get mail addressed to other people? Do you throw it away if its something they probably won't need anyways? Or do you return it to the post office?

I get mail for other addresses on my street and even mail for other streets! It is at least once a week. I swear, we need a new mail carrier if she/he can't sort mail any better than that! Makes you wonder how much of your mail that you never get! I have had bills missing before and with service like this there is no wonder!

I know what you mean. If were getting all of this other mail for people then our mail has to be floating out there somewhere too!

OMG! I totally know what you mean. We've been in this house for over 3 years and we STILL get mail for previous owners...yes...plural! There apparently were a few different residents in the house in the years before we moved in. We actually get more mail for the residents before the last one more than we do for the last occupant! We've complained to the Post office, the postmaster general at the post office, and even put a note on the inside of our mailbox. No luck, they only sort by address, not by name. So if it looks like "real" mail, I put it back in the mailbox with "no longer at this address" written on it. Otherwise we just toss it.

Were getting important things for these people. They have to be missing them. We already started getting their W2's. Shouldn't they be concerned about getting them? I never thought about writing on them and throwing them back in the mail box I always just make the trip to the post office. Thanks for the tip!

I usually give it back to the mailman. I put return to sender on there and that does it. You never know what could have happened to prevent them from putting in a change of address. That does not bug me as much as getting someone's mail that live close to me. I do not mind giving it to them, but it makes me wonder where some of my mail may be going. To me, that is a nerve wrecking thought.

When we bought our house I sent the previous owner's mail onto their new address for ages. This carried on for over a year and I got fed up so now I just write "not at this address" and post it back in the mail box.

I always throw the mail that is not mine out. I don't even give it a second thought and besides why do I want to waist my precious time on someone's elses mail. If the previous people don't have the courtasy to change their address then this is not my problem. Crocket.

I know what you mean. My husband and I have been living in our house for over 5 years now and we still get the wrong mail delivered to our house. I have done the kind thing and wrote:No longer lives at this address please stop sending mail. It doesn't work, we still recieve the same mail from the same companies looking for someone who hasn't lived here for I don't know how long. I think that it should go on record right away so that I don't have to keep sending back the mail.

Not anymore....but I used to get it often when I was staying with my parents before marriage. One of my neighbours had the same first name as mine and her initial was the same too; our house number was different by only a single digit. I always used my surname and not initial...but I would invariably have her mail delivered to me...when it was not delivered by our regular postman (postwoman actually). And there have been instances when I've opened her mail without realizing that it wasn't mine...but I've always handed her mail to her.

I have lived here for 2 years and still get mail for previous tenants and NOT the ones who lived here just before me. A couple of days ago, I got mail for someone on another street!! I also get mail for my children, but that is because they sometimes have things sent here for themselves. But what I do is circle the address and write on it "not at this address" and stick it on my mailbox for the mailman to take it back. It used to be that I didn't like to do that, but when I asked him one day about it, he said he didn't care, that it keeps him employed!

When me and my fiance moved in an apartment for the first time we used to get alot of mail addressed to someone else. It was mainly junk mail anyways. So i just threw it away. I think there was one important letter one time and i put it in the outbox. So the mail carrier probaly took care of it.

Not exactly the same, but been living here almost two hears and still get catalogs and things like that for the former tentant. I just throw it. If it were mail, I'd bring it to the post office and explain. I believe it's illegal to throw out someone else's real mail

I know what you mean.. It's annoying! But I guess there's nothing to do but return. It's better when it's just you next door's mail then it easier. But yeah, fill out the form! Doesn't people care about their mail? :-/

One time we had some parcels with baby clothes delivered to our house, the post code was no where near us and the package was about 90 miles away from where it should of been. It had absolutely non of our house details what so ever on it :S. We get mail for a house round the corner, our house is number 2 there flat is 2a so thats ever so slightly acceptable, but it still annoys me to think that my mail could end up at there house and they might not at all feel the same way and just rip it up and throw it away. We sometimes send it back with(in massive writing) "NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS" on it and that nomally stops the mis led mail arriving for a week or two.

We get wrong mail every once in a while. Usually, it's just somebody on our street, but we've had a couple times when it's been someone not even close to us. If it's someone on our street, we'll bring it to their house and give it to them. We've had people do the same for us. If it's someone far away, we'll put it back in the mailbox with "return to sender" on it. The mail carriers definitely need to do a better job with getting mail to the right people because we've got things that looked really important like bank, tax, or other financial mail.

We have lived at my home for 22+ years and we still recieve the wrong mail. We get next door neighbor mail, we get mail for people that we've never even heard of. Sometimes we place it back in the mail box with wrong address written on it and they take care to deliever it next time or if it's really not important we just toss it.

We have been here for almost 3 years and I still get mail for everyone that has lived here since the house was build. None of the previus owners has given the post office the new address so they cant reach them anyway. I just collect it and when I go to the post office I give it to the people working there.

I also experienced the same after transferring here in our new home. The privous owners' letters keeps on coming. But what I did was returned it to the mailman so he will be the one to return it to the mail office. I keep on reminding him that the people are no longer living here. That we are now the new owner of the house.

I know what you mean and it's really infuriating! i guess the best thing to do is to report it to the post office so they won't deliver the wrong mail to your house anymore..

It's actually uncanny that you have created this discussion as this as this took place for the first time today! I received one letter that did not belong to me so I guess I'm just going to repost it. I wouldn't dream of throwing out someone else's mail though. I think that the appropriate thing would be to place it back into the post box down the road. I can understand how irritating this must be though when you have received countless pieces of mail in your letter box. Andrew

I think it's just the lack of paying attention that we all get someone else's mail. I have lived in my apartment for over two years and I still get previous resident's bills, junk mail... etc. I have tried talking to my local post office, and they always say "we will get to the bottom of this," and they never do. I think they just say it to appease me and to shut me up. Also, sometimes we get a mail carrier that fills-in for our regular mailman, and he ALWAYS gives the wrong mail to the wrong people... not old residents, but the wrong letters in the wrong box. I am always delivering mail to my neighbors (all over the place) mail for them that was delivered to me my mistake. Now you know this guy just doesn't pay attention to what he's doing! SO IRRITATING!! XOXO
