I do not eat corn products. They have no nutrients and affect blood sugar levels, so I do not eat, buy or serve anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup, but reading this was very upsetting but also made me happy that I decided to NOT use it long before this information was discovered. Please go to this link and then, after you read it, click on the link in the article and tell me your thoughts. http://healthychild.org/blog/comments/much_high_fructose_corn_syrup_contaminated_with_mercury_new_study_finds/

Thanks for the information, but I can't worry about all the things being wrong or bad with our food stuffs. After a while, I wouldn't know what to eat! I do use corn syrup but I think for now on I'll cut down on it or like you said, use more honey.

I know!! It is like, "What the !@#$%%^&*()_ do I eat?!!" I have cut back on a lot of stuff but I still eat much of what I ate. I do not eat many carbs, sugar and corn products, and do read labels, but then again, can you REALLY trust the labels? I guess we all need to grow our own food, but then again, the water to feed them is probably bad.....

Sorry, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but this just doesn't hold enough true facts to worry about. I agree that HFCS can be dangerous to your health, but read that article carefully. It states that a "detectable amount" of mercury was found in... what was it? One out of three products and then it goes to to state that "in 2005, 90 percent of chlorine production was mercury-free" and that only four plants in the US (out of how many?) still rely on mercury cell technology." (The clincher? Senator Obama introduced legislation against using mercury technology. How convenient to find that fact.) Ok... do you eat fish? Shrimp? Oysters? Any seafood? Watch out for mercury. Do you use the new CFS light bulbs? Never, ever break one, because they have mercury in them. And so on...

Hi Peavey. Yes, I know about the CFS bulbs. I have them recycled and, thank goodness, have never broken one. I cannot eat lobster, due to the mercury and eat fish, occasionally but most of it is local from our streams. I have not had problems there but I do have a sensitivity to mercury, so I know when I have something with it in it because it makes me very ill. The problem is, some is hard to avoid but in corn syrup? Just makes you wonder.

I just actually did a long article for Associated Content about High Fructose Corn Syrup in general and also had a small section mentioning about the mercury aspect...it seems in some vats where the HFCS is processed they use the mercury....WTF for I don't know. The scarier part is that this HFCS is in practically everything, even foods you don't expect it to be in, like Wheat Thins, Campbell's Tomato soup, Salad Dressings and of course ketchup. I recently threw away my ketchup and managed to find an organic ketchup that has no HFCS...I'm beginning to become a lot more conscious of what I'm buying now and read ingredient labels like crazy

PS--many feel that the vaccines kids get and which contain thermisol which is a form of mercury may be responsible for the rise in autism and ADHD....but could it also be the exposure of foods with HFCS that may contain mercury be the culprit too???? Just a thought there

I use a low carb brand of ketchup that has no HFCS. My daughter has not vaccinated her daughter, yet, either, because of the additives/preservatives in the vaccines. She is waiting until she is older and will not do multiples, either.

Phew...nanajanet...where does it stop? I do use Corn Syrup..it is one of the ingredients in my son's favourite "Pecan" tarts! And now, I find out I am poisoning him! Where does one sort out what is safe & what is not, these days? Spend all one's time on the internet researching? Guess we'll all have to resort back to the olden days..we grew sugar beets & made our syrup out of them! It seems like there is "toxic" news like this weekly! But thanks for the heads up...I printed the article, and am passing it on to family & friends!

I know, it bothers me, too. I just found alternatives to sugar and corn syrup. Honey is safer, if it is organic and local.

nanajanet...I am looking into the alternative "stevia' for myself..as then I will know what I have got! We have a wonderful "organic honey" farm on Vancouver Island that offers all flavours, of supposedly "organic" honey! They plant organic plants, they grow organically for their bees...but their fields are in an Industrial Park, under a airline pathway...and beside roads! Organic...I am sceptacle? My ex-husband was a Airline Pilot (now retired) and I know all about fuel dumps, for take-offs & landings! CFC's scare the dickens out of me...I think it is another of the Government putting the cart before the horse...people are disposing of these things in their garbage..and it's going to landfills! Yikes!

That's an amazing find! I was reading that a lot of parents are blaming this for the rise in autistc children! This could certainly be the cause of many illnesses and problems among our children today! Corn syrup is used in almost everything sweet! Interesting dicussion yet again nanajanet!

Thanks. Forget the mercury part, corn syrup is just plain bad for you and what annoys me is that now they have freakin' commercials saying that because it is natural, it is okay to eat. Ummm, cyanide is natural, too!

Like other grains, corn is a high-carbohydrate, high-fiber food. Eighty-one percent of the solid material in the corn kernel consists of sugars, starch, and dietary fiber, including insoluble cellulose and non-carbohydrate ligning in the seed covering and soluble pectins and gums in the kernel.* Corn has small amounts of vitamin A, the B vitamin folate, and vitamin C. I guess the only ones with the mercury content is the corn syrup. I have never tasted a corn syrup yet. I guess the mixture they used to make the syrup contained the mercury that was detected on it. I guess we just have to stay aware of what we eat around us and be aware also of factors or news concerning our health.

omg, if we could only go back to making and growing our own food and drink things. everything we consume these days seems we find out sooner or later its bad in some way.

Our main food is product of corn.In lunch and dinner we eat rice and curry. In breakfast we eat rolled bread with curry. We also eat various type of cakes. These all are corn products. It's not possible for us to change our food habit. From Pakistan to Japan the main foods are product of corn. Then it's almost a global problem.I think in your site there is no remedy of this problem. However I shall visit that site.Thank you.
