Another sad story in the news this morning of this baby boy who was living with his grandma at the time and she dosed off to sleep after putting him down to sleep on a pillow on the dining table in the front room only to find when she woke up, that the child had been taken from the table by the family pets a Jack Russell and Staffordshire bull terrier and had sustained serious injuries and died It is rather sad, you can read the full story on the below links... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7887994.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7876508.stm Thinking - how could she leave him on the dining table in the first place???!; if she did not hear any commotion when all that occured!; it is possible the child may have woken up or moved then fallen off the dining table or something..startling the dogs...if they did not take him off the table as is thought.. The dogs have been killed following the incident but what an awful way for a child to go...! negligence on the grandma's part and such a shame for the parents... I have never been keen on pets but there is no way I'd leave a young child unattended in the presence of an animal of any kind, however tame I think it might be!! What do you think of this story?

That is a terrible story. You never know how pets are going to react to a baby, so it is really best to keep pets away from them if you are not going to be right there in the room with them.

I think so too...animals get easily startled...I doubt they were that hungry to maul at a human if they were house-trained, baby may have fallen off the table or cried and they got startled, even them trying to comfort the baby the way they do their young would be fatal Sad story..

I don't know why she put that little baby on the dining tabble in the first place when she's sleeping ! Don't they sleep together on the same bed!

Its sad. Its even sadder to see dogs now adays some becoming violent towards people. And children suffer worse. I know from experience. My dog when i was around six bit me on my face and i had to have stitches. I have a scar barely noticeable thankfully. It reminds me though how violent animals can be but has not stopped me from being a dog lover.

Woo, you are brave to still be a dog lover coz I was chased by a dog on a couple of occassions when I was little and I am very fearful of animals now, I cannot go near them! This story is sad really, cannot imagine what the child went through

It is strange really leaving the child sleeping on a pillow on the dining room table then the doing off... I wonder if grandma was well or even in a fit state at all to be looking after such a young baby on her own

Putting a child on the dining room table? Why not in a bed? It would not ever dawn on me to do something like that. What was she thinking? I know this is horrible but if I am taking care of my granddaughter and feel sleepy, she will go in her crib and room, where she is safe. We always had pets but unless I can keep an eye on the pets with the child, no matter how good the pets are, I could not take the chance, for whatever reason.

The whole scenario with the child on the dining table is surprising! Grandma may not have been in a well state of mind coz how you'd leave a baby on a dining table that can wake up and move is not normal.. It's a shame!

What i have never understood is dog owners! Everyone of them thinks that "their dog would never hurt anyone" HELLO people wake up and think.... I hear stories like these and it just gets me so angry, that people would not stop to think, and that innoncent children get hurt. what a waste, and if gramma is full of guilt - GOOD

I agree with you... winds me up when people say that! I am not one for animals and whenever I am out and my child is nervous about an animal and people say that, it winds me up! Keep your dog to yourself, I do not need it coming near me or my child and you assuring me of that...! Anyway, the whole 'bull terrier' in the scenario... these have been known to be a danger to children and adults too I do not understand why people still keep them as pets... Sad story

Putting the baby on the dining room table? Dogs associate the dining table with food. What was the grandmother thinking? If she wanted to take a nap, she should have taken him into the bedroom with her and closed the door. I mean she probably had a bed, so she could have made sure the baby would not fall off and he would have been safe, but to leave him alone with the dogs who saw the sleeping baby and thought it was a roast or something.

Why in the world will his grandma put him on a dining table to sleep, in the first place?? That sounds so weird to me.. Even if the baby boy wants to sleep, she could have put him on a sofa or elsewhere.. I guess those dogs must have taken the baby boy as a puppy because of his size, and that they wanted to play with him.. IN the end, it's a case of mistaken identity.. It's really sad for a baby boy to die in this way..

Yes, whether the animals were playing or trying to comfort the toddler if it was crying (bull terriers have been known to be very dangerous around kids), it would have ended fatally! Don't know how tired the grandma was not to hear anything at all or whether she was in a well state of mind going by her actions! The parents would probably never forgive themselves and don't know how this grandma must feel..jeez!

Thats a sad story, I don't know why the grandmother didn't wake up, surely there was a lot of noise going on, while it was happening, she possibly could of saved the child. I would never think that a Jack Russell would do something like that, we have one, and he is so gentle and good with kids, my nephews play with him all the time, as for the bull terrier, I don't know much about that breed. Its just sad...

'Bull Terriers' if I am thinking of the same breed are rather dangerous and you are required to keep them on a leash in parks here as they are not very child friendly either... My feeling is that the dogs may have tried to comfort the child if it was crying or if it fell or something...cannot imagine the whole thing! Wonder if grandma could ever live this down, does not seem like she was in a fit state to be left with the child going by the scenario

Bizarre. The dogs must have been very hungry and mistreated. I cannot believe that they would do such a thing. And I would like to know what what up with the grandparent that would leave this child in such a precarious situation.

OMG! thats awful why would she leave a small child unattended on a dining room table, and not even think something might happen, she should have been a lot more careful in my opinion, thats a very sad story.

I think this is such an awful and tragic story...that poor baby. I think mainly there was a huge amount of carelessness that has caused this to happen.

It is a tragic incident and because of the negligence of grandma. How could she leave the three and half month’s old baby in dining table? She is also treating in hospital for shock. It is natural but I wish she could sleep with the child; really I can’t digest her logic. I hope and pray, this news will be an eye-opener and in future people will take care of avoiding such tragedies. I really feel very very sorry.

Oh this is a sad incident. No and never trust a dog because their temperament were very unconditional. A year ago I was also bitten by my own dog though it was accidentally happened I could tell that we should be aware of our dogs. Yes, I think that the grandmother has nothing to do with the dogs but she should put the baby in the safety place before she went to sleep. But I think it would be not be excuse anymore.

Oh my gosh that's so sad... The family must be totally devastated, but I really think the grandmother should have paid more attention to the child, shouldn't she have put the baby back in the crib before going to take a nap? It's such a simple thing to do, and it could have prevented the entire incident from happening. I feel sorry for the poor dogs too, although they were also to blame in this.

I have seen this new in website. It is an awful way for a child to go. I hope by seeing this incident parents will realize about child care. My request to parents who has children is dont neglect children at any time, particularly if you have a dog or cat at home.

That's just sad. Some people just don't realize the dangers a pet poses to a child. They are still a wild animal and needed to be treated as such. And what is up with letting a child sleep on a table??? At times I don't think certain people should be allowed to have children or grandchildren.
