Do you get scared about visiting the dentist?

I recently had a dental appointment and didn't see it as a big deal. When I told people about it though, many told me they were frightened to going to see the dentist... this made me feel frightened about my own appointment. Anyway, I had nothing to be scared of in the end, sure it's not the most pleasant experience but it's not the worst either. Or maybe I feel that way because I had no major dental work done. How do you feel about visiting the dentist?

I really enjoy going to the dentist for some reason. There are a lot of people that cannot go to the dentist, and to be able to go to the dentist is a real privilege I believe. I remember when I was younger we were poor and I was never able to go. I went ten years without a check up. Now that I am able to go I really sit back and enjoy the fact that my teeth will be okay. Your teeth should be taken care of and you will have good confidence in yourself, they are a good investment for you to have and you should not let them get unhealthy. But anyways, happy mylotting and have a great night or day!

I think I am like you, and I enjoy the fact that I can be taken care of, because I was not as a child. It is good for you all over to have healthy teeth.

Same here guys, I'm not afraid of the dentist, in fact I long for the moment when I'd go visit my dentist. I guess it's all about training and correct information. Probably the fear comes from the mother's that try to threaten the child if he/she doesn't behave. I could really relate to this, my dad is a surgeon and it's funny that kids are afraid of the injection when an insect bite is much much painful. Well, this is due to the moms and the nannies who always try to make the kid stop crying by threatening him/her that the doctor would inject him/her if he/she isn't quiet.

if I have a reason to be scared of going to the dentist, it's only for one thing: the price I will pay. Literally, the professional fees, and other expenses that I may incur in any dental work. In our place, going to the dentist costs much.

You're not alone, I agree - the cost to have even a check-up is way too high

No, it doesn't scare me. When I was a child it did because I knew I would have to take the fluoride gunk that tasted nasty and made my mouth dry. But now I don't have to do that, and going to the dentist holds no fear for me. I had a root canal once and feel asleep during it. My dentist said he has never had a patient sleep during a root canal before.

I don't mind going to the dentist as long as they don't have to use needles. As far as just getting your teeth clean its no big deal. I had to have a needle put through the rouf of my mouth to fell a cavity in one of my front teeth and I'm telling you that was painful.

Not really. They are pretty good well it really depends. If you keep your teeth good then it wont hurt that much. If you dont take care of your teeth and its pretty bad then they do a bunch of junk to you teeth to get them better. That hurts and alot more. Thats why people get scared of them.

Yes, you're right. We all should all take better care of our teeth and maybe that'll stop people spreading painful stories about those that don't look after their teeth and did need a 'bunch of junk' done to them!!

I have heard that dental treatment was a lot more gruesome than it is now, so I really do feel for you. I guess it's all for the greater-good though eh?

For me the scariest bit is getting the bill, it's not cheap having your teeth seen to and I dread having anything done! Even just a check up can be expensive and that's without any fillings or worst, tooth work needed to be done. Fortunately I have been lucky, I have good teeth, I look after them, but I know that if I don't I face hefty bills and the dreaded drill, that is one thing I hate and dread the most, the drill! You think with modern technology they would have done away with the drill by now, but no, it's still there to haunt me, many a time I've had the dreaded drill that is what I get scared about!

I understand, you are the second person to respond with a comment about the price. I know what you mean about the price of just a check-up. I really have wondered before why they charge so much.

Hello UK_Shree. I always feel scared when visiting the dentist. There was this time when I went to the dentist because I had a cavity and had to have it pulled out. It was my first time having my tooth pulled so, I was shaking all over. I think it took me three hours for me to finish. It took so long because I was having a tough time convincing myself to relax.

Yes, I was given a medication to ease the pain. It took me so long for me to finally relax.

I can imagine how frightened you must have felt. Were you given any medication to help reduce the pain or the anxiety?

I do not like it. It is something that has to be done is my attitude, I find my dentist a nice enough guy and use a walk-ion dentist service so I do not have to wait in apprehension waiting for a couple of weeks or so. If I have a problem I can usually get in that day or next and it works out great. If I had a choice I would rather not go, but there are other equally things I do not like doing. With the pain relief I usually get by, and if I could I would be knocked out. I got a general only once and it was great, sat in the chair and the next thing I knew I was waking up in the recovery room, did not feel a thing. I think the people who are really apprehensive might look into sedation, it can really help.

Yes I do agree that the apprehension is what makes the whole thing way worse. In addition to chemical sedation do you think techniques like hypnosis might also work?
• Canada
18 Feb 09
I am not familiar with hypnosis nor accupuncture and I think their results might be mixed depending on the individual. There is nothing as effective as nitrous oxide gas or a shot of pentathol though. Difficult patients should consider general anesthesia although there is a slight risk in being put under. Most people do not need it though. I think the dental industry should consider more hypnosis and accupuncture in their practices though.

That's good that you have the right attitude about the dentist. It does make sense when you think of the overall picture and the fact that you are looking after your own long-term health

I guess the best way to avoid seeing the dentist is to look after our teeth. That way we can minimise any treatment

I grew up in the 1950s, and I learned to hate going to the dentist. I still hate it, even though dental procedures are nothing like they used to be. I had to have a tooth extracted and some reconstructive work started last week. I was in the chair with my jaw propped open for almost 4 hours. There was nothing scary about what they were doing and virtually no pain involved, but it was still an uncomfortable situation that left me with a sore mouth and aching jaw. I'm glad that they can repair the damage time has done to my teeth, but it still isn't fun having it done. My daughter has neglected her teeth since she left home 10 years ago, because she hates dentists so much. Now she finds herself needing a ton of work done, mainly because of the neglect. It would have been a whole lot easier for her to have a yearly appointment and maintain her teeth than it will be to repair them now.

Oh I don't even like to imagine what dental treatment must have been like back then... you are right though, if we just all maintained our dental health a little more sensibly, we might have very little to fear

I used to be frightened at the mere thought of visiting a dentist. The fear of pain, the stress, just about everything about going to the dentist wasn't right for me. I guess that was way back when I wasn't comfortable with our dentist. However, when I found the dentist who could make me feel at ease even while she was pulling my tooth, it all changed for me. Now going to the dentist isn't a difficult thing for me to do. I could easily visit my dentist if I need to, without all the fear that I used to have. Here's a thread I wrote last year on my visit to a dentist http://www.paulynramirez.com/dentist-day/

I was afraid with the dentist when I was still a kid. Until I found out the importance of them when it was taught in us in school. I now regularly visits them to have my check up.

I've never had a fear of dentists. I don't completely understand why people do. I have never had an unpleasant experience though, and I attribute that to always having great dentists, both personably as well as their professionalism. Let me also say that I did get all four of my wisdom teeth removed while I was concise with minimal discomfort. Following the surgery I had no visible swelling, I healed quickly and had no need for perscription pain killers. So I think the fear might come from having very unprofessional or just generaly uncaring dentists.
@UK_Shree (3603)

I agree - the fear arises from either having a bad experience or from hearing stories about other people's bad experiences

Going to the dentist is an issue for me to because I'm scared of the way how he picks up the affected teeth. It is so painful to me but I think, we should not leave our teeth. In such condition in order to avoid the teeth decay spreading to the other.so going to the dentist is mandatory for me.

I feel fine before going to a dentist, I attend dentists once a year for a checkout. Earlier when health care wasn't that great here in Latvia, I was afraid from all doctors because dentists include lots of pain because of the technique. I know people who are scared of dentists, they don't like the idea about it. They better prefer to break an arm than go to the dentist and let him/her bore a tooth.

Its mad isn't it? I guess its all because of how sensitive the mouth is compared to other parts of the body
