are you a vegetarian?

I started being a vegetarian because I was brought up next to a farm that kept cattle. I used to go and see them every day and they were like friends - there was even one I used to ride! When I realised that some of them were being sold for meat, I couldn't bear the thought of eating them, or any other meat except chicken. Then it got to the point that I couldn't justify that either. I think the benefits of being vegetarian are huge, and the best thing is that I can look an animal in the eye without feeling guilty! There are many different reasons for being vegetarian - what are yours?

I am a vegetarian. Being a person in India with vegetarian upbringing, there is nothing particular about being so. From Hinduism point of view (also Jainism) , vegetarianism is the most recommended food habit for good health and spiritual progress. In Indian philosophy, non-vegetarian food is Rajasik and Tamasik. They build muscle, create and sustain animal passions and influence your character negatively. Some people say, human intestine (particularly the small intestine) is essentially designed for processing veg food. C.V.Rajan

Humans are not designed to be vegetarians. If they were they would be able to chew their cud like a cow and have bigger grinding teeth. Our nearest relative is chimpanzees who eat a lot of fruit, some leaves, insects and some meat. They are onmivores just like us. You can eat strictly vegetables if you want but you need a source of vitamin B12 and iron otherwise you will sicken. As far as the Indian vegetarians and Jains, their food is not clean due to few pesticides and they accidentally ingest insects and insect parts in regular small quantities. When the come to "clean" places like North America they develop nutritional deficiencies. Chimps and humans have ominovore all purpose teeth, not all big flat grinding ones live herbivores, and not all sharp ripping ones like carnivores. They also have the medium sized intestines of an omnivore, not huge like a herbivore and not short like a carnivore. We also have binocular vision with out eyes place in the front of the face like carnivore hunters so that they can keep prey in front of them in sight, and not at the sides like herbivore prey who have to look forwards to see where they are running, and backwards to see where the hunter is that is chasing them. Physiologically then we survive on an omnivore diet. We should take a tip from our nearest cousin and eat more fruit and insects. I realize that vegans take food to a fanatical level, and propagandize how healthy they are, but many sickly vegans suffer long term health problems that are caused by the very diet they are expecting to one day miraculously cure them. I have no problem if you decide to go no meat, that is your choice, but please stop trying to proselytize others if you do so. Like the statement about the human instestine being designed for veg food is just wrong.

Im not vegetarian but I respect the people that is, but I just want to know how do you replace the proteins present only in the meat? Theyre more than necesary. By the way, a lot of areas of the human brain where activated and developed because of the man starting to eat meat, that really shows how necesary it is...

There are many different sources of protein - soya, nuts, cheese, and lately there is Quorn which is very high in protein and made from some sort of mushroom.

Yes, I have heard that vegetarians live longer, I don't know if it's true. It may be that vegetarians are generally more careful about what they eat in general.

Everyone assumes that it is healtier, but I have a vegan friend who also did it macrobiotically and rides his bike to work every day. He skiis and is thin, but guess what his cholesterol was 600. His doctors also say soy is not a good enough protein and it also causes bad heatlh effects in the pure forms ( like destroying your thyroid as you get older). Many on that diet do not take enough supplements as there are protein needs thst are not filled by this diet. Now that he consumes fish, chicken and some meat, he is healthier...... Try getting rid of carbs, they are the real killers. NO one gets ill from lack of carbs. http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/sugar.htm

I would find it extremely difficult to be vegan, and I can't see any point from my point of view. The reason I am a vegetarian is that I don't want to eat animals, I don't mind drinking their milk or eating eggs.

No I'm not a vegetarian, but my sister try to become one for a short time, but she couldn't stick with it, never the less, she and I have a lot of respect for those who have made the choice to become a vegetarian, because for those of us who have grown up eating meat its not easy to convert, and I understand how growing up near a farm that sold animals that you had become friends with for food, would upset you, that must have been tough for you to deal with, but I think being a vegetarian is a personal choice that one hast to make for themselves, and may not be for everyone, my sister try it mainly because she thought it would be a healthier choice and she felt it might be better for her, but its not as easy as it seems to switch from eating meat to mostly vegetables and soy, especially when you've grown up most of your life eating meat, but thumb's up to those who can and have converted.

It really is a personal choice. All I am sure of is it's right for me. You mentioning about it being hard to stop eating meat when you are used to it - it's the same the other way round. I would find it very difficult to eat meat now!

Animals are human friends for thousands years, and we eat their meat for protein which is an important nutrients for body growing----that is why people in developped countries are more strong than poor ones. Often when i stare a goat ,a cow ,or even a chichen & i can find something in their eyes---- neither the big eyes of the cow or the tiny ones of a cute chicken. So now i barely eat meat. And today many diseases of man are caused just eating too much meat, what is more, someone are infected with fatal virus. In my opinion,we should eat more less as we growing more older. That is beneficial to our health and mood^……

It is true that many people eat meat to get protein, but there are so many alternative protein sources becoming available now, so in many parts of the world eating meat is no longer necessary. It is good that you don't each much meat.

I like my share of vegetables daily but that does not mean that I don't take non vegetables. Yeah, vegetarian diet is good healthwise but non veg diet is also not bad if taken in moderate. And I love my non veg diet which I won't be able to abstain from. Good luck friend!

I am a vegetarian. I don't like any meat including fish and chicken. For me it is mostly taste and also that I don't like the thought of eating something that was once alive.

Hi.. well I've been eating meat since I was a kid. I've been really used to it. But I tried to be vegetarian for health reasons. I tried but it lasted for a very short time. I mean, I think I was a vegetarian for only a month or two. Then I found myself always craving for meat since I've been really used to eating meat. Then I was introduced to a vegetarian restauran, BODHI. They have what we call vege-meat, it's something that is made of vegetables but looks and tastes like meat. But then it was expensive to always eat there. And what made it harder was, it was only I in the family who was trying to be vegetarian. It was hard to see them eating chicken, beef, pork while I was eating leaves.. So I was a vegetarian for a short time.

When you start being a vegetarian, you do sometimes get meat cravings, but I found the cure for that was bacon flavoured crisps! Also it is difficult if you are surrounded by meat-eaters.

No, I am not a vegetarian. I like my veggies, but I also like my meat. I try not to eat to much red meat, but I really do enjoy a thick juicy steak once in a while!! I could not bring myself to kill an animal myself though. If I had to kill an animal to feed myself, I would probably starve. Growing up, we had many animals, mainly chickens. Dad would joke with us and tell us that we were eating one of them, but he didn't do that too often becaue if he said it, I just could not eat the food at all.

That seems right. When you are so close to anything you grow sort of closeness with them, be it human beings or animals. In your place even I would not be able to eat their flesh. I am not purely vegetarian, I mean I take non - veg food too. But my wife is a haed core vegetarian. There is one advantage of being a vegetarian and that is you have less of health related problems and I have seen those who are more wit ailment of this or that are all non veg. I am trying to be a veg and hope I succeed in my mission.

It is healthier. I don't eat alot of meat either. And I can barely have my daughter eat it. So at some point I am sure it will end up that we go veggie all the way. Just haven't gotten there yet.

i tried vegetarianism but it is just not for me. i was always hungry. i do not eat tons of meat and chicken but i do need to have some in my diet otherwise i do not feel satisfied. i like meatballs and meatloaf too much to give it up completely. i think a good balance is the best diet. i love my vegetables and my fruit so no problem there.

I really really wish I could be a vegetarian. And yes, I agree that the benefits are huge and I applaud you for your efforts. I know it's not easy. I've tried to do it several times but I cant seem to give up my chicken. One of my new year's resolutions this year was to push myself to be a vegetarian. so far, no go. I think you really have to have passion for it, which unfortunately I still dont have at the moment. anyway, keep it up! I really envy you vegetarians out there. :)
