This shot is of the 2nd tomato that I bought recently and the removal of those annoying stickers. The first I pulled off quickly and it ripped a good chunk of the skin and fruit from the tomato. This shot shows the sticker with the skin on it of the 2nd one I bought. I peeled this sticker off real slow to avoid ripping the tomato to shreds. Ever have a sticker on fresh fruit/vegetables that ripped it when you removed it? I hate those stickers but they do tell what it is and all for the registers to ring up the right price(s). HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I don't like them either. I usually forget to take them off and when I cut a vegetable I'm more than likely to find it in the stew or whatever I'm making! I do like them, though, since I prefer self checkout and they save me the time of looking up the item.

Hi GRANDPA BOB, Why do they put stickers on the tomatoes anyway, can't they just stick the label on the package. Tamara

If they are sold individually they have the stiucker which has a code number so the cashier punches that number in and the tegister knows the price right away is why the stickers are there. The packaged veggies are preprioced with a UPC code on the package though. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I read a book from this woman, and it was about her life and the things she had gone through. She told about one time when for some reason she got the idea to take one of those fruit stickers off a banana she had purchased, and stick it inside of one of her husband's shirt collars. Well, the day he wore that shirt, he came home and didn't say a thing. The next day she felt something itchy on the inside of the tag of her skirt. She pulled her skirt around to find that her husband had put the sticker on HER skirt. And this went on for weeks before one of them finally gave in and mentioned it.

I don't think I have had that problem with fruits or vegetables. It seems like the little stickers that are on some of them come off real easy. Now I don't want to get started on toys for kids at Christmas time that have stickers on them that are impossible to come off.......dang, where does Santa get those toys, I thought the elves made them? hahaha

You are right they are supposed to be there for the cash register as there is supposed to be a UPC code on the little stickers. However I never see the cashiers at the stores I go to scan the tomatoes or other fruit. I do not peel off the sticker until I am ready to use it. I do not know why I do this but I guess it would save doing what you did and then damaging the tomato or fruit. When I am ready to use I wash it and remove the sticker at the same time. I confess though on having neglected to remove a sticker or two and find a neatly sliced label in my salad.

There is no UPC just a product code number is all for the stores register. They are converting to a laser embedded code in time as well. A laser imprints a code into the skin and it is not visible to the eye just to the scanners at the registers. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I always thought that the number was a grower code. I see bar codes on a lot of them now and I suspect there is more information as there are two rows of bar codes which seems a bit much for four numbers. However the subject made me do some research.. Those stickers are PLU stickers. PLU means price lookup. The cashier should be able to look at the number to see what kind of apple, tomato or pear it is. Here is an article on the subject. http://xmb.stuffucanuse.com/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=5170 Article on tattooed fruit http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/19/dining/19fruit.html

Well, it can be a pain when they do not remove these stickers and then make us have too. But since they have had everyone in a lot of stores anymore have to memorize the codes and such, or have to ring up everything now via a Code, there is no way to really prevent this. It would be nice if there would be places year around like Farmers Markets to only sell Fruit and Vegetables but since places cannot grow these in the cold weather we have to rely on them from the stores as well.

I hate them too. It reminds me that the price of produce has gone so high through the roof that they have to put a sticker on everything. And when you cut them up for salads, mix the greens all up, there is this piece of green or red pepper or a bit of a tomato with half the sticker on. I mean soon someone is going to eat some paper.

At least they do not put stickers on the Roma tomatoes. They are too small, but they do have them on the beefsteak.

I didn't know that the stickers are so sticky that can pull off the skin too! In my town tomatoes in the supermarkets don't have those stickers, but fruits have them. Apples, oranges, plums, pears, bananas etc. So far I've been able to remove them pretty easily without leaving adhesive residue, perhaps I've a knack for removing stickers. Many of the stickers have a 4-digit number on it, perhaps it's the product number, so it's somewhat fun to see a series of numbers obtained from the stickers, where we used them to buy lotteries at times. Happy peeling!

I've had a little apple skin rip off but none of the fruit really. They're annoying but I can live with the silly things.

Yes I have had that problem many of times, Grandpa Bob! I get so tired of these stickers!~ It gets in the way of my fruit. I get big chunks off of them. I just peel it off very slowly.. I don't know why they put stickers like that on the fruits and vegetables.. I am going to start buying the vegetables that are wrapped in a plastic wrap if possible. And my fruits as well.

One of my daughters used to love collecting those stickers, and had them plastered all over her lunchbox! They can be a nuisance, though - especially if you are sitting watching telly and forget to check before taking a mouthful of something! I didn't know they were used for scanning the price, though - I thought they were just a brand sticker.

I always have had that problem!! And it's more annoying when just the sticky part stays and the top layer pulls off only. But when I was a cashier, and there was a new type of produce in without the numbers, it was frustrating to go search the code and price, etc.

I've had that happen with the occasional plum or ripe pear but I don't think I've had it happen with tomatoes... probably because I rarely buy them. (I do grow them, however.) Nancy White, a Canadian singer-songwriter, recorded a song in 2002 on the Borealis label, that she called Stickers on Fruit. Guess what it's about...

I hate the stickers like you do. What I hate even more is going to a restaurant and finding the sticker on your tomato in the salad you are eating.

i hate those ol' stickers to. i buy lemons all the time for my ice tea. the stickers don't hurt the lemons like they would a tomato but i just hate having to take them off. i don't notice stickers on the tomatoes at the grocery here. i usually buy roma tomatoes in the winter & i don't thin they ever have a sticker on them. i'll be soooo glad when honegrown ones come in. it's usually july before we have those.

i do notice them but they are not sticky and they don't in any way damage the skin of fruits like tomatoes. cause they are actually easy to come off. and they are actually small stickers.

Did you look at the photo I attatched? The sticker is on top upside down with skin on it. You can see the area of the tomato that the skin was peeled off with the sticker. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Never had that on a tomato before, which shop did you buy them from? I have only ever seen them on skinned fruits like bananas and oranges, and ofc apples.. Apples being the most annoying one imo. It's always a pain to get it off and you are, without exception, left with a little bit of glue on your apple.
