Well today I went to Lowe's thinking of plans on what I'm going to do to the yard this year I have a couple of flower boxes and some yard that I have dedicated for my veggies and fruits and other plantings. I have a window sill green house of herbs that I got and then I got 2 little things for watermelon and two for pumpkin and my other half has gotten a window green house to start his pepper plants.. I'm thinking if we can get two tomato plants and some cukes and lettuce that will help out.. So have any of you decided on starting a garden of veggies and fruits due to the economy?

I am not able to as I live in a very small apartment and there won't be space to do so. But it's a great idea to plant and re-seed your own food instead of buying them, if you have to time and patience to do so. Food accounts for a very large expense in everyone's life, and being able to sustain yourself with the food you have grown and not being a slave to the increase in prices. What's more, people will tend to appreciate food that they have grown themselves. To save even more money, you could try out these devices out there that takes moisture from the air to create drinkable water. You could use the water gathered from these devices to water your plants.

have you thought about planting on the window sill at least some fresh herbs for you to use?

Well we do (when I say we I mean my other half and Niamh - you do realise that right?) try to grow some veggies every year Bella honey so we will continue to do that but not just due to the economy! I have to say hat if we had more empty space on our garden we would try and grow more but as it is we usually just end up with potatoes, carrots and tomatoes - we shall see what happens this year! xxxx

Yes I am planting some vegetables and grapes to cut short some of the vegetable bills. I am thinking of planting more than the one I am doing right now. I think we can save lots of money by cultivating vegetables and fruits. I think you are doing a good job and would advise you to do more. It is always great to have some good plants in our home.

Yep you just have to make sure you have big enough planters for the tomato plants. They all can be started on the window sill and the herbs can stay there and if you get a big window sill box you can do many things.

yeah. i have been planning to but since i have don't have garden nor enough soil to plant i may not be able to. but i think that tomato is easy to grow even with some can or pail or soil only. but it is quite hard i think . it is better if you really enough garden to plant on. cause few tomato plants will not be enough help or provide enough.

Actually i have already started mine. It has corn, okra, potatoes, brocolli, chives, carrots, rosemary, and lettuce. I started it last week and have already gotten some starters. The corn is really taking off. I started a garden for my parents and planted Tomatoes, okra, corn, Kail, cilantro, lettuce, pole beans, bell peppers, and peppers. although they haven't taken good care of it, the tomatoes are the only thing still alive. But none the less, i think with a little love i can get it back to the way it was.

I always grow herbs, tomatoes and strawberries, but I don't have an awful lot of room for anything else. My garden is not the biggest of areas and is already planted with well-seasoned heathers, flowers and shrubs. I do, however, buy from local farms, who often put their wares on the roadside, down the country lanes and leave a box for the money to be put into. Brightest Blessings and good luck with your growing venture. xx

You should be able to grow from seed indoors and then plant out later. I wish you all the best of luck, anyway. I have pics of my garden but not when the tomatoes and stuff are growing. The strawberries are in a big pot and fruit yearly, and the herbs are just being planted ready for me to prepare a place for them in the garden. :)

I really want to do one but I don't know if it's going to happen b/c it has to be done at my Moms (we don't have a yard) and she's putting it off. I hope we do though b/c it would save us a fortune. My Dad puts in a huge garden every year but he lives in Michigan and we live in Missouri. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

That's what we've been talking about. We only live like 3 houses apart so it wouldn't be a big deal to share it. Though I'm wondering if there isn't going to be a big increase in garden robberies. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

If you feel there might be a bigger increase in garden robberies then maybe one thing to do is plan ahead like a little bit of chicken wire fencing and also plant extra that way if someone does come by and take something you planned ahead and still have enough...

See if your mom would mind if you came over and did the prep for her so that the garden would be effortless almost for her in the start up category. I'm going to try and use my yard and my grams yard and hopefully I'll be able to get enough for both of us.. LOL!!!

We want to have a garden this year but don't know if we'll have enough time to get around to it with all the projects we have going on! Sometimes I wonder if we'll ever get this or that done so we can get started on our garden but then it rains or we have an appointment or this or that and the other comes up. lol Where's that emotican that shows a person pulling their hair out because that's me to the root!! lol

I plant a garden every year and it always gets over run with my tomato and cucumber plants, no matter if I follow the spacing instructions or not. Your melons aren't going to grow any bigger than a large grapefruit I hope you know. They will still be sweet but they don't get big enough in our climate for more than one person to enjoy. That is if you are like me and can eat your weight in watermelon in one sitting. lol I am planting 3 kinds of tomatoes, green beans, peas, cucumbers, and carrots. I used to plant green peppers but now they give me heart burn so no more peppers for me.

thanks hun.. I love having fresh stuff but I'll probably only plant enough for us for the summer and I don't think I'm going to have enough for me to store for the winter but it would be nice I wanted to put in a black berry bush and a blueberry bush. Yum.. But I think ryan will kill me if I put those in.

Yes, I plan to have a vegetable garden, hopefully get it planted this weekend. For those of you that don't have a backyard, there are ways to grow a veggie garden with out the need for a yard. Here are a couple of ways that you can create a veggie garden for yourself. If you have a balcony this should work pretty well, if not, you can do it inside as well. By using a growing light, you can get some great veggies out of an indoor garden. Pot gardening is a great way to create a vegetable garden, you can use just about anything to create a pot. If you would like to have root veggies like carrots or radishes, these can be planted in the long flower pots in rows, radishes of course grow rather quickly. You can do tomatoes, cucumbers, zucinni (can't spell HA), peppers and many other veggies. Of course you will have to make sure you water regularly so that they will grow nicely. If you feel that the soil you use doesn't have enough nutrients, you can use miracle grow or one of the off brands to give your plants a boost. You will be amazed at what you can grow veggie wise in pots. I have done all sorts of veggies that were great and the kids loved them. Have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks Chulce, I'll have to remember this for over the winter I might be consulting you to keep my growing season going all year round .. Maybe I can find a nice spot in the basement and have a go at it with a grow light.. Hmmm thanks.

I do a garden every year no matter what the economy is doing. It's one of the best ways there is to save money!! I try and do enough so I can fill the freezer with enough to get by during the winter too. Plus, when you plant your own veggies, you know exactly how they were grown. Besides, lol, they just taste better than anything you could ever purchase at the store, don't you think?!

I think that this is a good idea. It would save you money in the long run and you know what you are eating. You are having a more genuine product. It gives you a purpose in life and something to look forward. If I had a garden I would do the same too. How are you doing with your gardening after a year that you have posted this discussion?

Well, with the rising cost of food today, it's more than worth it to plant. If you know that everything will survive and bring you a good harvest, then it's more than worth it with the money you'd be saving. I will be planting when I move, I'm sure that the home owners will like it too.

Last year I hayve planted vegetables in a very small space I have in my house. Some were planted in improvised pots from empty softdrink bottles. I planted, tomato, bell peppers, okra and pechay. For months, I did not buy vegetables and I was able to save money.

I was thinking of findeing a place in the house to set up a couple grow lamps and start and indoor garden one that I can keep going during the winter. LOL!! But that is going to tak alot of work if you know what I mean.. LOL!! The only place that would be avaialble to me would be in the basement and I don't think that the basement will stay warm enough for the plants in the winter.

Have you thought about a simple window box garden for herbs then. My mom live in a town house and she has a patio that she gets a planter and plants a tomato and pepper plant. Maybe you can do something small this year and then next year do something more.
