2 gb of memory is the best, but you must see on the site of your laptop the capacity of ram that you can insert in.

Right, it does depend on what your computer mainboard is able to handle. Most of the new ones can go up to at least 4 gb of ram. So buying 2 gb sticks might top it out. It also depends on the Operating system. I believe XP will not be able to use all 4gb.

Xp does use the maximum of 4 gb, any more, and xp will not use it. personally I am more than happy with my xfx motherboard with windows vista 64bit, running 8gb of memory :) But DEFINATLY go with the 2 1GB memory stick options, though I would suggest buying a pair, not one at a time. I would suggest checking out http://www.tigerdirect.com for your memory as you can get a rebate on certain types of memory :)

The bios see the maximum quantity of ram installed on pc, but windows xp and all the 32 bit operating system don't see more of 3.3 gb of memory...

Unless your using demanding programs that require absurd amounts of ram I would say go with two 1gig sticks, also they will run in "dual channel" which increases there preformance slightly.

Is that where the extra memory comes into play i know i have 1gb as 2 512mb but when i look at the memory amount in the system setting it reads i have 1.11GB. This would explain how that happens and i believe makes it better to have two sticks as opposed to one. Thanks for the help

If you decided to buy a RAM of 2GB ,then make it as two RAM. In case of failure of any one, we can manage with the other without any interruption in our work, but with slower speed. IF your laptop can be upgraded further, then at the time you can buy card for 2GB so that your is having 3 GB with a spare card of 1 GB.
