Let Them Eat Cake (even if it's almost midnight!)

It's near the end of the month, and there's no "real food" in the house (we get paid in a couple of days but not today). I picked up a couple of frozen meatloaf dinners at the drug store on the way to the coffee shop, and we ate those. They were good, but not very filling. I went to the burger joint next door, and their credit card machine was on the blink, so we coudln't even get burgers! By 11:30 at night my husband and I were thinking of gnawing on the legs of the furnature. Then I remembered a cake mix I had in the cupboard. Not sure how long it had been there (probably since I moved in here) but it was airtight, so I knew it would still be good. It had never been opened. "How'd you like some cake?" I asked him. "Hey, that sounds alright!" he responded. Hubby's a whiz in the kitchen, and loves to throw food together. I read off the instructions and gathered a lot of the ingredients, and he blended them all together, and popped it in a greased cake pan. It's now in the oven, with the timer set to go off in half an hour. We'll let it cool for about 5 minutes, and we'll eat our nice warm cake for a midnight snack...literally, because that's what time it's going to be ready! Anyone else on here do crazy things like that?

Yeah, actually, I do things like this! I'm a college student, so this may be more expected. My suitemates and I sometimes make late night pancakes or cereal runs. We call these "midnight breakfasts". It's fun! They're like study breaks. For the average person working, though, they could be considered life breaks... or a snack for bed. I don't know. All I know is that it tastes REALLY good. But I'd be careful what you put into your mouth this late. Sugar can keep your mind awake - which isn't very good. Make sure that what you're eating isn't going to conflict with your sleep schedule or make you feel worse in the morning. So you're definitely not the only one! Cake, pancakes, cereal, ice cream... all of it makes me happy, and having these foods once in a while is definitely worth the good feeling inside - especially after a long day!

I'm pretty much nochturnal anyway, so it woudln't matter if I ate a half a pound of coffee beans! (mmmm that's a good idea. I think I have a bag in the kitchen) Even if I did sleep reasonable hours, food and stuff doesn't really keep me awake. I like to be up at night to listen to the BBC World Service which runs on the local station...but only at night. LOL

I have done things like that also. I eat and sleep at different hours each day, it seems. I never have a real schedule anymore.

I cannot afford to stay up until midnight most nights. I should be in bed right now, in fact, but I am expecting honey in the back door any minute now. Yes, if we are up we will do stuff like that. Actually hubby is more the icecream kind of guy. Or a sandwich. I just had soup at 9:30, cause I got called in to work.

I can't say I've ever actually cooked anything which became a midnight snack. I have, however, when I've been short of a meal, found a can of macaroni cheese in the oven, sliced some mushrooms and a little onion, cut a rasher of bacon into small pieces, cut some tiny florets of brocolli and mixed them all in with the macaroni in the dish... then topped it with grated cheese and put it in the oven. Then, I've baked a potato, and eaten it with the macaroni cheese in order to fill me up! It was tasty too! Gave a whole new meaning to macaroni cheese! lol. Brightest Blessings.

I feel for you, I know it is when you have to wait for money to eat. I do that all the time. I just uesed the last of our eggs yesterday so I couldnt even make a cake. But if thats all I had to eat then that is what we would have. We are having sausages for dinner tonight and fter tonight then I dont know. I'm sure something will come up.

Guilty as charged! Me and hubby fixed some chocolate chip cookies last night and it was about the same time we plunged into them! But oh they were soooo good!

Sounds good to me, the only thing that would make it better would be some ice cream to go along with it. I wish I had a piece of cake right about now, don't even need the ice cream, just the cake. Enjoy!!!!!

Yep, sure do! If I am hungry and don't have much in the house, I will eat what I find OR what I have a taste for, no matter the time. If the stomach is calling, I try to answer it!! lol

I like to bake in the middle of the night when i cant sleep. The other thing i like as a snack for late nights is a pot of kraft dinner - but ya gotta eat it right outa the pot while you're watching TV.

What's wrong with baking a cake at midnight? That's not as bad as some of the things I've done in the past. My daughter and I used to run out to the all-night supermarket at 2:00 in the morning for a pound or two of chocolate in bulk. Sometimes, we'd run up to White Castle for a couple dozen belly bombers in the middle of the night. Lord, I miss White Castle! They're only in the Northeastern United States.

I don't but my daughter and son-in-law do. They eat anything at anytime of day or night. I can't eat anything after a certain time.
