A few days ago I was talking to my Stepmom up north and we were talking about their cat and how it’s always chasing things that get in the house. Now Morgana, our cat, does the same thing…if a bug, spider, worm or anything creeps in under the front door she’s after it. She’ll play with it till either we take it away or she kills it. Most of the time catch her and put it back outside, she isn’t happy with that though b/c we’ve taken away her toy.
Anyways, my Stepmom told me that they’ve gotten mice, birds, stray insects and bats in the house. The bats part stunned me. BATS??? Yup, bats…those little black or brown winged creatures of the night. They live out in the country and it’s not uncommon I guess for one to try to come inside for a little snuggle. She said their cat goes crazy jumping all over trying to catch it!!
I think Morgana would have a heart attack if one got in our house LOL The worse we’ve ever had was a bird that came down our furnace in a house we used to live in. I still don’t know how it got in there. It was wild trying to get it out of the house.
So, have you ever had bats in your house? What’s the craziest thing to get in your house? Does your pet go nuts when a little something creeps in? Is it up to you or your spouse to get rid of it?

A Bat in the house would freak me out. I have had stray cats come in before. I once went out on my porch and a ferret was out there. I had a raccoon try to get in once. But I think the biggest and oddest critter to find its way in was a snake. I am not talking about a little snake, I have had them find there way in too. This was a 4 1/2 ft. long snake. He was stretched out across my stove and microwave, heading for the sink. He was thirsty, I was about a foot away from him when I spotted him. To my way of thinking he wasn't real, I thought my hubby had put him there. I went and hollared at him, he thought I was playing a joke on him. At this time we both think its a fake snake, that is until he moved. Then it got exciting at my house. He looked like a diamond back rattle snake, it turned out he was a Texas Rat Snake. I live in Ohio, go figure. After a wild time, we caught him, named him Jake The Snake and put him in a critter cage. It turned out he was a nice snake. As for my cats, they do like to play with bugs when they find them.

Jake the snake evidently could not read the maps that said he was a Texas critter. I forgot, until I read your discussion, that I had a possum come in to eat cat food one morning when I propped the door open.

Years ago when I was expecting Niall 15 - I came home from work and went upstairs to use the bathroom only to get the fright of my life - there was HALF of the hugest rabbit you had ever seen. It must have been 3 times the size of our cat Barney and I have no idea how Barney got it through the cat flap or up the stairs - I freaked out and made my husband come home from work to get rid of it - I was desperate to pee and couldn't pee with that in the room! lol I have NEVER had a cat flap in any other house after that! lol xxx

Your stepmom needs to find out where the bat got into the house and seal it off, because if it returns with friends, there can be a huge infestation in a relatively short period of time.

We have seven cats. Most of the adults are nutty or atleast parcially so. They are so curious and cute when it comes to bugs or even objects they find in obscure places. My mother had our cat bring home a rat and scample and play with it for quite awhile until finally killing it. I still remember the sound of the crunching bones and all. Ugh! It is odd to witness.

Hi twoey...Yes I have had mice and bats in the house...We used to have a house out in the country on a lake. The mice would get in somehow and I would set traps for them..One day when we were away for the weekend, I set those sticky traps on the floor hoping I would catch them while we were away. When I came home, I saw fur sticking out and said great, we caught the mice
When I got close up, they were bats!..Two of them...i never thought about them eating the same stuff as a mouse but they are mice with wings anyways...lol..
Then one day we were laying wood floor and a bat flew down from upstairs and nearly knocked my head off..
I wouldnt sleep til hubby caught it...the walls in this house didnt come all the way to the ceiling so the bat might fly in while we were sleeping. I blocked the ceiling off with sheets so it couldnt get in, and the next day, my hubby caught it. Supposedly, you are just supposed to turn off the lights and open the door and it will fly out. But how do you know if it did if its dark out??

I have had bugs and birds but never bats, so far. I have an acquaintance that had a bat come into her house in the dark and she inadvertently killed it trying to shoo it out. I can say that at my clients' house we had a small snake come in. I caught it and took it away outside.

worst we've had were rats, and the cats couldn't catch the darn things - tho The Doctor once found a baby snake in the house (I rescued it and released it.)
HOWEVER, my friend that lived in Pennsylvania for several years, her big black cat caught and killed many a bat.
The landlady wasn't too sure about the cats until Dabbie started killing bats, then he was her BEST FRIEND!

Hey twoey! My cats will cry if they see a spider or a fly
or any other insect in the house! And if they can't get to
it they will go crazy and keep cry and climbing and screaming
some more until either it is out of site, or they do get it
or Mommy gets it for them! The worst thing I've had in my
house is bees which I am deathly afraid of because I am very
allergic and have to inject myself with Epipen and go to
the hospital if stung. Thankfully my kitties seem to be able
to get the bees for Mommy! But, flys and spiders, no way!

Well once, a squirrel came in my back yard. and my two dogs chased after it. They chased for about 20minutes or so before I realized, at first I thought that they were playing with each other until my niece screamed that my dogs were murderers. too my dismay, I was shocked! what does she mean my dogs are murderers? so I looked out side and I see my dogs attacking the poor squirrel, without a second to spare I ran out in to my back yard grabbed the squirrel away from my dogs, it was still alive I could see its chest breathing, moving. I rushed the squirrel to the vets and they tried to save it. now the squirrel is my pet =) this is because it can no longer survive by itself in the wild after the surgery. If I let it go it would die.

We have not had anything too strange enter our house except the odd bug and lots of ants which are driving me crazy! My cats go insane chasing them.
You mentioned bats and it reminded me of my grandmother's house. She lived in an apartment on the fifth floor and whenever she left a window open at night big ugly bats would fly in and when I stayed there once, one got behind a wardrobe and my grandmother had to get a neighbour help get it out. When the wardrobe was moved the bat flew out and was going for my grandmother's hair! It was the scariest experience a child could have!

I do not have a bat house in my experience, but think about that very terrible. I have seen a bat, at that time, I will not consciously think of the television to see off the bat will suction the blood! Is a kind of aristocratic cats pets, cats are a spiritual animal, but if you see a black cat, though it could be tens of millions of eyes. Otherwise, you will be brought to evil!

Well, the house I used to live was quite old. Our neighbour used to look after it when we were away. Anyhow, one day we came back, and he said,"I think a bird got inside somehow. There's all this white poo up the stairs, and a couple of ornaments have been knocked over on the window sill."
It certainly looked that way - lots of bird-like poo but very little damage. We couldn't find it, so reckoned it must have got out. Anyway, one night I heard this scream from the living room. My husband had been watching - this is no lie - Christopher Lee as Dracula. His face was white as a sheet. He said: "A bat just flew across the room!" I did the usual, yeah, yeah, tell me another thing and asked where it was. He said it flew into the linen basket. There was no sign of it so I said he must have been dreaming.
No sooner had I left the room than he came straight out after me, yelling this thing had divebombed him! Again, I didn't see it.
For the rest of the week we stayed out of the frontroom. My hubby was convinced he was being haunted by a demon. One night, I thought I heard one of the kids moving about in there. I opened the door and WHOOSH, the biggest bat I'd ever seen darted out of the linen basket and zoomed up the chimney!
It never came back down, but I think my screams saw it off for good. Oh, and hubby had a very relieved, "See, I told you so!" look about him for a few days!

I have never had bats get in the house but there are birds that have gotten in the house. My cat has passed away three years ago but this would happen when she was alive. She would go crazy trying to catch them. I always tried to open the upstairs window and try to shoo it out the window. But my cat would always get mad at me.

When I first moved in here (a major fixer-upper that had stood empty for at least 6 months), there were mice running around like they owned the joint. Then one day a squirrel got down the chimney and crawled down the flue to the ground floor and came out of the old wall furnace that was missing its back. I managed to chase it out of the house but it was so frazzled that it turned around and ran back in to the house before the door closed! Had to call in an exterminator to get him out and seal off the chimney.

My cats are the same way. Just a week or so ago, my cat Bobo caught a dove and brought it inside early one morning. Hubby heard a commotion and got up to investigate and found him with the dove. He said it was still alive but mangled up pretty bad so he took it outside and put it out of it's misery. I told him that I didn't need to know that much! Being an avid animal lover, that just tears my heart out!
About bats, although they're ugly creatures, they're very good to have around because they eat millions and millions of bugs at night. I know they carry rabies and such which is a really bad thing but as long as we keep our safe distance we all should be ok. We can only hope anyway. For some reason, we have to have the good along with the bad and it's no exception in this case.

Morgana sounds like a totally normal cat! My dog, Cookie, will kill anything that's not human. She's a little rat terrier and can catch birds, rabbits and other things. I don't dare have a bird bath outside because of her. When birds come down my chimney she makes short work of the poor things. When I got a new chimney last year they were supposed to put a grate on it but lo and behold, a couple of weeks ago a bird made its way in. I still have to call them about that!

Hi twoey68,
Once a few years ago one of my cats brought in a bat, I couldn't belive it and I told the cat to drop it, he wouldn't let go but I managed to get him to let it go, it was still alive so I put the little black bat in a box and give a little stroke on its head, he was so soft, I put the bat on the top shelve where the cat won't get it rang the the bat sangturay, the told me I was doing the right thing, I went bed that ning and had my bedroom winow open as it was a hot summer, when I got the in the morning the bat has gone, it flew out of the window, it was so sweet.

Some animals made a nest in my parents chimney once. They had to call the chimney guys to come and get them out and put a new cap on the chimney to keep them from coming back.
