I Just Called To Say, I Emailed You!!!

Earlier this week my employer decided to give me my own company email address. This was supposed to help eliminate me having to called many people during the day, instead I could email them. I was okay with it, it isn't really a big deal to me. Well, today I was working and my warehouse manager came across the intercom and paged me to call him at his extension. I called him and he said, "I just want you to know that I sent you an email that you need to read". I'm sorry, but I found this funny. They gave me email to help eliminate me having to call people and talk to them and now they want to call me just to tell me to read my email. I just think that it defeats the purpose. Now, I'm wasting time talking to him about him wanting me to read my email, then after I read the email, I had to email him back. Have you ever had someone call you just to tell you to read your email or something to that affect? Crazy, isn't it?

actually, that is good business practice to make sure that you did receive the email or fax. you see, technology is not only to do away the petty things in life but to also to do away with paper. it is a practical medium , a tool to make things easier to transmute documents but if it is just a hello letter and they call up to ask if you have received it then that is funny.

This seems to happen all the time where I work. I admit, it does seem kind of foolish at first, to call someone to tell them you emailed them or received their email, but sometimes I find it can be a great tool when someone is avoiding their emails, or if they simply have too many unread messages in their inbox and you want to make sure your message gets prioritized. I'll sometimes call even just as a follow-up to say, "hey, FYI, big info in your inbox, let me know if you have any questions" similar to if I had sent a fax and I want to confirm that the recipient actually got it. It is crazy though, to have all this technology making things "more efficient," when sometimes it seems it just creates more work!

I just called to say , check ur email........ Wow, that was really crazy. I thought that email was supposed to be something of a personal nature and that you could check it at ur own convience not when somebody tell you to.........

That does kinda defeat the purpose as you say but they also use less time on the phone talking about it and it is easier to just send mass emails so that you won't have to keep repeating yourself over and over again on the phone about the same thing. Well, I hope that it has helped productivity some.

Ok, I am sorry, but that is just dumb. My brother called me the other day to let me know that he PayPal'ed me some money since he does not have his debit card yet and he wanted me to take the money out for him. I was sitting in front of the computer when he called me.

He may have just known of it's importance and wanted you to know of it's importance as well. Either that or he'd emailed you earlier in the day and had forgotten and when he paged you and you called back he'd remembered he'd emailed so he said "I emailed you" instead of what he was initially going to say?

I do the same thing. Just to verify that they do read it. I have friends call or email me- Did you get my email? It is a human thing. We all want to be recognized and I think too that we get inpatient and want it five minutes ago. And, I get ansy to just be sure it is done before I forget so I might call because of that. Crazy it is but I can sort of see why this person called. I will wager that in afew days all will be organized, everyone will know you have your own email address and they won't be calling.

I know just what you mean. I think that any new technology takes time to work it's way into people's habits. After that happens we all wonder how we ever got along without it.

I would have laughed about that as well. My favorite email ever was one from a customer and in the email they said, "Let me know if you don't get this." Yeah, sure I will.

I don't think he will make a habit of calling you each time after he sent you an e-mail. He probably wanted to know something right away. The problem with e-mail is that people's expectations are raised. They want instant results. I had a manager once who spent most of her days sending e-mails to her staff. She expected that the notification that told you an e-mails had arrived was on at all times. If you did not get back to her within the hour she would come around to your work station and demand an answer. Since it was a very busy job I was in the habit of reading my e-mails twice a day at a specific time. Obviously this was not good enough for her so I had to interrupt whatever I was doing each time I saw that an e-mail had arrived from her desk.

That's funny! Although I know why he did it, at my last job I would get email and not know it because the computer wasn't configured to make a sound when email was received. I adjusted it to ding when it received an email and to show the little envelope at the bottom in case I was out of the room and missed the ding.

That is funny! I can see why he did it though because I have been waiting for replies to emails that will be read god knows when and I have felt like phoning the person but I sent a text instead! What made me smile was that the email system was introduced in order to cut back on phone calls!
