Isn't this a Weird Phobia?

I just realized that I have a really weird and uncommon phobia, or at least I haven't heard of it until lately while surfing the net, and even then I had to dig it up. I have more than one, but the one I'm speaking of now is my carpet phobia. I don't feel this way about any carpet, just certain textures. I can't stand to touch certain carpets or walk on it, especially if it's dirty or wet, YUCK! It's makes me nauseous and it gives me the goose bumps to even look at it or smell it. I remember when I was 12 years old, my mom and dad had a brown, ugly, fluffy carpet in their bedroom, and I couldn't walk on it, oh heck I couldn't just stand there either and look at it. We have towel floor now, but I can't stand the bathroom rugs my husband bought from the dollar store. He uses the rugs to step on when he gets out of the shower, and that literally drives me nuts because he wets the rugs, and it's so yucky and makes me nauseous. Every time I go into the bathroom, I would kick the rugs up with my foot/shoe while holding my breath, to keep from walking and standing on them. Can you believe he doesn't even know I have this weird phobia? I know he wonders why the rugs are always kicked up or either thrown into the dirty clothes. I'll tell him soon I guess. Do you have any phobias yourself, or know someone that does?

I cannot touch raw meat. I thought it was normal, I didn't think I had a phobia for something like that. I don't know why I can't touch raw meat, it just disgusts me for some reason.

Oh my gosh! I have the same carpet phobia. It's not all carpet, but certain ones I just can't bear to step on. So glad to learn that I'm not alone on this one.

I have to admit that I think that's a strange phobia. But feet are sensitive--I can't stand for my bare feet to touch the slimy bottom of a river, I get hysterical. I also have a phobia about roaches, I hate them more than anything!

What really gets me is that they are the most resilient creatures on earth. They can survive a nuclear blast! They might spread disease but they also take care of waste. They are actually an important part of the cycle of nature. I think what gets us is their antennae. An ant has antennae, but they are fairly short and not really obvious. A cockroach's antennae is in our face, very obvious, and that's foreign to us and other-worldly. And maybe they even originated from another planet--that's what some people theorize about spiders, why so many people are terrified of spiders. Well, whatever, they are DISGUSTING!! I can't even stand to crush them, it grosses me out. I've been in my house for 2 years come May and have never seen one, thank God. But I have spray on all four floors, upstairs and downstairs, basement and attic, in case I see one. I know I'm ridiculous but that's just how I am.

Oh my goodness! Did you say roaches? I freak out everytime I see those disgusting busters. We try to do whatever we can to keep those nasty creatures away.

Hi, miraclefreebies! I don't really think that your phobia is wierd. I mean, you just don't like the feeling off a rugs texture. I know that I am picky on sitting on chairs behind others. Like when I go the doctor's or anywhere else there are public seats, I will have a funny feeling about sitting down on them. I have sensitive skin, so when my skin starts to itch that means something is unclean. I am very funny about many things. Like who bed that I lay on. Who house that I eat from... I guess at some time in our lives, we all get like this. I have seen shows where people have phobias that are scary. They will soon have to face their phobias sooner or later. I myself, don't like wet carpets, it makes me think of hidden mildew and germs.

Yes, it will drive me insane too. The wetness drives me into thinking that it is wet full of moisture that is infected with many germs. I will keep the rug dry as possible.

I got a better idea. Take it outside and dump it into the nearest dumpster and walk away.

Hello how are you doing? Long time no hear from. I can't think of any phobia's but I know I don't like wet rugs either. I have the same kind of rugs in my bathroom as your husband has. I just put mine out to dry when they get wet or even when I finish using them after a bath. Most of my floors have vinyl tiles. My living room and my master bedroom has carpet however, I love the carpet on those floors.

Hello Chevee! I'm doing much better now. How about you?..... Wet rugs are disgusting creatures. YUCK! Tiles are my friend everytime. Oh, and some carpets are OK as long as it's clean and dry and flat.

Your rug phobia is similar to mine, except mine is outside! I hate walking barefoot on grass; just thinking about it just now sends goosebumps all over me. I hate walking barefoot unless it's inside in the house. I'm okay at the beach or public swimming pool providing they're clean. I don't know why I feel that way in regards to walking barefoot. I'm not a germ phobic or anything like that in other areas. I am quite afraid of heights too.

I guess it's good to know I'm not the only one with such a strange phobia. I feel so weird about it. I like walking barefoot on sands on the beach and swimming pool, but ugly, dirty or wet carpets are just flat foot YUCKY!

I do not like messy hands, but I guess that means I am a neat freak, and that cannot be a phobia. But I cannot stand looking down from a high height, I get very dizzy. Being some place high does not worry me if I move my feet down and climb down without looking down, but if I turn and look down, I get very scared. I may have other phobias, but I have no idea as no giant mouse has come knocking at my door, and I have not been attacked by a guy who uses a knife to slice bread. Yes there was a painting in an old age home where this guy was slicing bread with a sharp knife and I told my husband that i did not want to go in a place like that because with the guy slicing the bread -

Sounds like a scary painting. It's a good thing it can't come to life, I would run myself. I also get dizzy when I'm up high and looking down, but I try not to get into that position.

Ok. I must say that this is the first time I heard about carpet phobia in my life. I do not like wet carpets either but I do not have that kind of strong aversion that can be classified as a kind of phobia. I mean, sure wet carpets are ucky but I do not really go crazy if I see one. Anyway, I think you should tell your hubby that you do not like the rug. Get rid of that rug fast!

I thought I was the only one with a carpet phobia until I read a few stories from other people online about having the same thing. And yes, the rug has to go.

That's indeed quite a weird phobia especially when it's not those furs or whatever that scares u, instead, it's the wetness and smell.. hehe ^_^ MOst phobias from carpets starts when we are kids and we are not used to those furs on carpets.. haha =D But as we grow up, we will outgrow that phobia of ours, and that's normal.. However for your case, i wonder what causes u to be so scared of it when it's just wet and the smell is something that cant be helped Luckily for myself, i dun have any phobias yet, and so far, nobody around me ever told me that i'm scared of something.. haha =D

The wetness of carpets is probably the worst part of it, but dry carpets that are ugly, dirty, or not flat, will send me insane too. The texture plays a big part. I hate thick, fluffy or furry carpets. I prefer a flat surface, that's why I love tile floor.

Hehehe well that sure is a weird phobia.. A phobia or morbid fear is an irrational, intense fear of certain situations, activities, things or people. It is an excessive, unreasonable desire to avoid the feared object. And according to American studies phobias are the most common mental illness among women in all age group and the second most common illness among men older that 25. I don't know if this is considered a phobia but I'm afraid of injections. Maybe that's why I am used to self medication. My brother has a weird phobia too. He hates seeing and wearing ripped clothes. Even clothes with small wholes he hates them and he says he gets a yucky feeling wearing them. Not like me, wearing clothes that feels breezy hehe. Ciao!

Hey miracle! Of course we all have weird phobias! I guess it's ok to have a carpet phobia! Why not? I have phobias too! I hate heights, closed spaces, crowds! I don't really care too much about carpets though! I much rather have bare floors! I don't think that you should be upset about it or hide it from your husband. You should be able to tell him everything afterall he is your husband! People have lots of phobias and it isn't the end of the world so don't worry about it! It could be alot worse!

I don't know why I haven't told him yet. I think I just wanted to be and feel normal and ignore it, but I decided to face the truth and accept it, that's why I'm gonna go ahead and tell him about it. It won't hurt.

Hmm, well I never really thought of it that way. If a little water got on the carpet when I came out the shower I never made a big deal about it. I think what bothers me the most is when I go into people's homes and see how they take care of their home, if its messy then I'm going to be very paranoid, even if it has anything to do with the carpets in there. I'm an EMT and I sometimes drop people off who live in projects and it is downright disgusting and I don't wanna imagine what's under their carpet....... if they have one.

I believe that comes under the heading of being tactile defensive. I have certain things I will not do, if given a choice, but they do not reach the extent of being a phobia. My husband, however is that way about pasta. I have seen children who are that way about mixed foods, like fruit cocktail and even cannot stand to look at coleslaw. Maybe your hubby could learn to pick up the rugs after he showers. What do you step out of the shower on?

I step out of the shower onto the bare floor, because I dry my feet before I step out of the tub. It works just fine for me.

I guess I have a toilet phobia. I do not like for the toilet lid to be up. Lids are there for a reason, I hate looking into toilets. My husband is very good at putting the toilet seat and lid down when he uses the bathroom. I can always tell when someone was at my house and used the bathroom, because the lid will always be up. I know the water in the toilet is clean, but I have cats and do not like the idea of them maybe going into the bathroom, drinking the toilet water.

Hi sweetie. Maybe your mom and dad's fluffy carpet is where this phobia began. I try not to think of all the little bugs and stuff in the carpet or I would probably have the same thing going on in my life. I have Agoraphobia to some extent and clostrophobia. And panic attacks and social anxiety. I think they all intertwine and have to do with one another.

Hi miracle, That really sounds strange, but I have a phobia of worms and snakes, I couldn't even look at a worm, I run for my life when I see it so that is why I can't dig in my garden. My friend got a snake and I won't go round there, she has to come to my place. Tamara

I had a chance to have my carpet cleaned and the stuff they pulled out of it was really embarrassing. I'll bet your phobia has something to do with that nature of rugs and carpeting. It's just yucky dirt and hair pretending to be a rug.

Hi miraclefreebies, I have no problem with some rugs just some shaggy rugs though I don't feel nauseous seeing them, I just don't like touching or stepping them when they are wet dirty lol... I have a really terrible fear of heights . I can't even take looking down a terrace even if it's just the third floor. My palms and feet will get sweaty and tingly. My nape and spine with also feel tingly and I freeze on the spot... lol I think you should tell your hubby about this so he will know what to do with the rugs ... Happy Easter! ^_^
