How can you prevent bread from getting mould?

I find that the bread I buy gets mould within 3-4 days and sometimes even faster!
How can I prevent this or at least delay this.
I try keeping it in airtight jars or containers.
Is keeping it in the refrigerator a good option?
Any other suggestions?

What kind of bread are you buying? The better options won't have so many preservatives in it so it will mold sooner. Do you have several open at one time? I usually keep my extra loaves in the freezer until I am ready to use them. Keeping them in the fridge is a definite options. You can always toast or warm them in the oven before serving. Bread will thaw from the freezer relatively quickly as well.

I am not sure what to tell you. My bread lasts quite awhile. Three or four times longer than what you are saying yours lasts.

I guess I'm prett lucky because I can leave my bread out on the counter for a week and be ok. Mold is caused from a few things - heat, dampness and lack of light. Eliminate those things and you can leave it out. Some you have no control over, but try to keep it in a cool dry place - and for lots of people that's going to have to be the fridge.

In the summer time I keep it in the refrigerator. During the winter it stays on the counter, unless I know I won't be using it for a while I just keep it in the refrigerator. It last there for a long time. I have also brought bread 2 for something then I just freeze one of the loafs.

i guess a good way will be to put it in the refrigerator..
because those moulds form because of the humid condition present..
so in the refrigerator i guess it will be harder for the mould to form..
but seriously, even if there isnt any mould on the bread, if it is many days old, please do not eat it..you never know whats inside..

What I do is to store my brown and whole grain bread in the freezer, and just put the loaf I use in the fridge. If you keep it out on the counter or in the bread place, it will get mold because it is confined and the damp air has no place to go.
It also could be that your place is too damp. So if you are going to use it, keep it in the refrigerator and if you buy ahead of time, keep the rest in the freezer.

i keep mine in the fridge,it seems to last a bit longer.
i was having a mold problem too,but that was due to high humidity in my kitchen, particularily the bread box itself!
i use it to store peanut butter now,it's really no good for bread.

Hi pitstop. Try to put your bread in the freezer. It actually works for me since I bought or made lots of breads and its only me who like to eat bread in the morning. I take out 4 slices which normally I consumed for two days and the rest are inside my freezer. It lasts more than a week.

Hi pitstop...I find that putting it in the fridge is our best bet. Even if it's put in a plastic bag it usually gets moldy. But for some reason it stays nicely in the fridge. Good luck with the bread!

I usually put my bread in the fridge after I open it and it lasts a long time. I usually buy two loafs. I use one and then freeze the other. It works out good. You just have to toast the bread longer than usual to defrost.

Keeping it in an airtight container won't matter when heat and humidity are a factor. It is best to keep bread in the refrigerator. It lasts significantly longer when you do.

I went and checked out a site and it says the same thing all the other responses have said. It said keeping bread in the refrigerator or freezer helps keep it from getting mould do to the fact that the cold keeps it from getting mould on it. Also it says to clean the refrigerator out real good.
