They say it's dark chocolate and yet it contains milk products

I love dark chocolate and in fact, if I had the money I would go and get some right now, but unfortunately I have to wait for our new bed to come. But that is not the question. Now milk chocolate bars obviously contain milk, that is why they call them dairy milk or milk chocolate bars and yet if you consider dark chocolate bars, are they of course not supposed to contain milk? So why do they put may contain milk products on the label? Does that refer to the butter they use to make it?

That almost answers it, but is it the milk itself, or the butter that they refer to.

Milk products are things derived from milk (lecithin and casein). I have a friend whose children are allergic to milk and all its biproducts. This is why they even list "milk products" when milk is not in the list of ingredients. Emulsifiers such as these are used to suspend one liquid in another. They help in the "mixing" of the product. In my friend's case, her children could not have ANY type of milk product and are thankful about this type of labeling. So unless it is in the list of ingredients, milk as we think of it is not in the ingredients but rather a byproduct of milk may be there. Can't say for sure if it's butter unless it's in the list of ingredients. Look for lecithin or casein (sp?). Those may be the culprit. What either of those two things actually look like, I have no idea.

I have a sister-in-law who is allergic to milk, so it's good to have it on the label. So thanks for clearing that up for me. I thought lecithin was made from soy products or plant oils.

I like what you are asking that is pretty good one....I love Dairy milk chocolate bars or any other kinds of chocolate. But the dark chocolate is use for cooking with more so then the dairy milk I agree with you about that they put the milk in to make it sweet.

I think they still add milk because it can dilute the bitterness of the chocolate. Sugar can sweeten, but the bitterness needs to diluted and they add milk to do that. Pure dark chocolate would be so bitter you wont be able to eat it. I like both milk chocolates and dark chocolates as well.

Then would they not just add sugar to it? That would make sense. I have made brownies with eggs, flour, a little salt, butter, and sugar, and no milk, and they were not bitter.

That sounds silly. Dark chocolate is better for you so why sabotage it by putting milk in it?

Maybe they have milk in them but not alot of milk? Not enough to make it creamy milky anyhow. Have you tried the dark chocolate peanut M&M's very good.
. I tried them and didn't know if I would like them but they were good.
I would think though that they all contain some milk products but maybe just not as much as their counter part milk chocolate.

I have a box of Black Magic dark chocolates on my desk which I bought yesterday and I would of happily of offered you one my friend! I think nowadays manufacturers have to be so damn careful about labelling because of fear of being sued they have to put warnings on everything and yes you are probably right there is some milk that goes into dark chocolate because of the butter content, they do it to cover themselves for allergy sufferers, after all they could sue the makers of the dark chocolate if they have an allergy, crazy world isn't it!

If there is the slightest chance it may have even a speck of dairy in it, they put that warning on it, because so many people are allergic to milk. If it was produced in the same place as milk chocolate there is a chance that it MAYcontain milk products. There are also texturizing agents that come from milk products that can be used in dark chocolate. Like Casein.
