Oil, Arcrylic or Water

Having been artistically inclined since a very young age, I drew and drew and drew.
I got into ink drawings, started adding color.
One day a friend of mine gave me a ton of water paints and water color paper.
I was in my glory for months and months.
I love the painting.
I think I would like the brilliance in color of the acrylics but haven’t tried them yet.
A couple years a go, the same friend turned me onto oils. This is a blast. They a bit messy but appreciate how forgiving the oil based medium can be.
The colors are much more to my liking. The texture is something to get used to. It is fun experimenting.
I have not tried acrylics yet but I would like to. The idea of water base appeals to me.
What mediums do you use in your art work and what is your opinion on each of them?
I want to use acrylics next. All input is appreciated.

Hi! i'm an art student and i much prefer acrylic than any medium. oil is too messy and watercolor is too opaque.. acrylic is just right :)

Nice, I have a hunch that I may find that as well when i try the acrylics.
I am so looking forward to that. I understand what you say about water being too opaque.
I love the water soluble medium but I love brilliant color. I think the acrylics are going to be my thang.
Thank you for your response.

however, the oil paint would be nice if you would put texture in them.. texture like sands are great because it sticks well and have a nice effect.. but if you're a beginner i suggest that you use acrylic first :)

and may i just add, oil paints are really bad for my nose since i have an acute sinusitis so my art professor stopped me from using them. :) it's nice to know that someone here in mylot is artistically inclined too :) take care and God bless :)

Like you I've been artistically inclined since I was a kid, and at the age of six actually did my very first oil painting. My mother was an artist herself and used to live to watch her paint..One day I asked her if I could do an oil painting and I guess to "amuse" my whim she gave me an old canvas board and some of her paints...painted in oils until my college days. I also introduced myself to acrylics and love how they dry fast..much faster than oils. I also have fooled around with watercolors as well--I went through a "fairy" phase and did a series of watercolor paintings on a fairy theme--here's one of them---My means of using watercolor is more in keeping with acrylic type painting though

Pyewacket; Thanks a bunch for your response, I have really enjoyed your painting.
I love the history of your painting. Great story. Thank you for sharing.
Do you still have the oil painting that you first painted?
I haven't tried acrylics, yet. I want to and eventually I will. I have been way too busy lately, with moving and all that I have had my artistic endeavors on the back burner. I tend to still use the water colors. I have a bunch of oils and am still messing around with them.
I have tried using a heavier water color paper and adding some oils and ink as additional mediums which proved to be rather interesting.

Hm, water colors are tricky. You must paint in a way that leave the white, acting as your highlights. For this reason I find oils much easier as I like to paint how I draw with pen and ink.
I can stink real bad too. I waste so much paper it's not funny. I use the real heavy stuff for water color too. So I paint small pics if i have been away for any real length of time. I like to have all my colors that i want to use out, wet my paper and go for it. One stroke painting I find is the best and leaves a nice clean and professional look. For larger areas I use a big brush. Smaller areas where I want detail, i use a smaller brush naturally. I will add different mediums too sometimes. i have even used oils on a page I have painted with water. lol
It is a good idea to get scrape paper and practice with paint on the brush and strokes to get to learn how to paint in one stroke to get the desire you want. I use a corner I cut off of a sponge for skies and backgrounds. Works really good, on paper I have damped with the sponge in clean water first. Not too wet or the paper curls. You can use a painting tape and tape the paper down first. This helps stop it curl but again, not too much or the paper goes weird.
I love to paint.
Thanks for your response AmbiePam.

I wrote my first short story at around 8 or 10. I'm really not into drawing or painting, my drawings have always been horrible I used to make my teacher upset looking at it. From what I heard, acrylic is the best for painting. I don't know why and I never try it, but that's what I heard. Also the type of brush is important factor, but I guess you already know that one :)

Thank you for your input. Yes, brushed and other applicators are a major factor in painting. I hear a lot of good things about acrylics and I am still stuck on the water color. I can loose myself, with no sence of time whatsoever in a painting.
Even though it can take days from start to finish. Each session is a great way to indulge myself.
Congrats on the writing. I used to be able to write and I still try as I am interested in pumping out a book. Do you still write and have you been published? Cheers.

yes a short story in English. I thought it was horrible but the editor thought otherwise. Years gone by I never wrote again. maybe someday.

I don't have the patience for oils. They take forever to dry, unlike acrylics, so if you want to make layer on layer of colors without mixing them you have to wait until almost the next day before you can do the next layer of color. I don't have the patience to create anything that slowly.

Interesting. I guess I am the type who, since a multi-tasker at heart, can be found to have three or more paintings going on at once.
One day, when I start an oil painting again, I can see having one 1/2 done, set aside, drying as I continue to dabble with the watercolors.
Sometimes I find that water dries much to fast.
Oil takes to long.
Are the acrylics a happy medium? I must try the acrylics!!

Hello, I have tried both mediums,as for me,oil is easier to use,I love using them before ,reason why I shifted to acrylics ,is because of the smell,it's kinda toxic for me so that's why I changed to acrylics,it's kinda challenging to apply than oil, although I haven't tried yet a new oil paint medium that is water base.Maybe I will try that soon.

Hi and thank you for your response. I have heard of the water based oil paint. I wonder if it still has that over bearing scent?
I just keep air circulating.
I am looking forward to trying acrylics.

Water colours was the first thing I tried. I liked it, and I spent a lot of time experimenting and I enjoyed it a lot. Sometimes I forgot everything around me because I had so much fun. Then I started using acrylics and I forgot about the water colours, because I liked acrylics so much. I didn't plan on using acrylics, but one day my ex-boyfriend bought me some acrylics as a gift, and that is the way I started. That was 5 or 6 years ago and I still love acrylics. I have never tried oil paint, but I would like to try it in the future. I don't think that I will give up acrylics, but I am curious and I think it could be interesting to try oil paint

I used to draw, use ink and add color. That is what I did most of. Then one day a friend stopped by with a whole box of water color, paint brushed and decent quality water color paper. I have painted with water color ever since and that was about seven years ago. Since, the same friend has brought me oil paint, brushed, thinner, and canvases. I am still trying to master the one painting. I am having a time of it.
As oil paint is so much more forgiving, I have mastered the water color. using oil and I suppose acrylic is exactly opposite. As in water, we save the the uncolored space for highlight.. if that makes sense.
I have not yet tried acrylic but one day, soon I am going to try. I love the brilliance in the color that I don't get with water color. thank you for your response.

Nice! Acrylics are a lot like oils but do dry faster. Oil paint is very forgiving indeed. I am having a time getting used to them however, as I am a water color painter. That is where I started in painting. I love them but I am so much interested in the brilliance of the oils, as are acrylics. I want to try them next. Cheers.

I'm not an artist, but know some artists. I've always heard oil was hard to work with. So, I'm glad you enjoy it. I also heard somewhere, over time, something happens to oil paintings. I think they fade, but this is after a long time. I've heard watercolors are easiest to work with, but acrylic gives deepth. Not sure what that means.

Hi smartie, I understand what you are saying. You can actually coat an oil once it has completely dried to help preserve it.
Water colors are easy but can be tricky. It is a good idea to think ahead and plan your painting before applying the paint.
I am looking forward to trying acrylics. Thank you for your response.
