Good afternoon my fellow myLotters, I am an avid reader however after taking a look at my book shelves (and thinking about the books in the attic) I realized I need to get rid of some of them. There are authors and/or books that I will be keeping however I have a problem...I don't know what to do with the books that have to go. I know that libraries will take some but not all but what happens to them afterwards...they go in the trash. I hate to throw books away but I don't know what to do with them. So I thought I would put the question out to my fellow myLotters...what would you do with books that you need to get rid of and the library didn't want but didn't want to throw away? Thank you ahead of time for your suggestions and to reading this post!!! Happy myLotting!!!

What kind of books are they? If they are appropriate to a specific age group, you might look at different organizations that cater to that group. Maybe donate them to an old folks home or something. If you want to take the time to post them online somewhere, you might try that. I know that I am part of freecycle which is a yahoo user group that you post free things that you want to get rid of locally. I hope these ideas help.

I don't usually get rid of books. LOL. I try to pass them off to friends or I'll take them to our church to sell at their fundraiser garage sales. I'm also thinking of putting some of my extras up for sale on my website - when I get it back up and going anyways. I have such a hard time getting rid of books - especially if I like them. They tend to pile up around my house. Then I'll find that I've got a couple books in my "uncollections" that are by the same author so I'll put them together and try to find a spot for the new collection.

I have shelves of books also, and yes I know how you feel about your books. I love my books and will never think of getting rid of them all. Maybe I will pass it down to my children or grandchildren... :-p

I gave tons of books away on FreeCycle. I just organized them a bit by category and gave them to people who wanted them, with a request that they pass them along or keep them, rather than throw them away. Several people in my community have now told me they've read some of the books I gave away since they've now been passed around a lot.

You SHOULD sell them on eBay. Who knows that if the book you are trying to get rid of might be the dream book of someone else!

Well, there is a second hand market for them, you probably won't make alot of money, but you will be rid of the books. I would suggest donating them to Salvation army or Goodwill. You might also see if there are womens shelters in your area, they might appreciate that kind of a donation. The other thing I've done with some of my books is bring them to my work. There's always someone looking for a good book to read.

My husband and I both read a lot and we accumulated a large collection over the years. We trade in a lot of our books at used book stores in our area--some of them will buy them, but some will only give you trading credit toward other books. We trade many books this way and save a lot of money on buying new ones.

Hi. Thank you for commenting. Those are the types of bookstores that I love. I don't mind getting credit towards other books. I have found great books that way. :) Sadly there are no bookstores around me that do this type of thing :( The closest one is 3 hours away and the amount of books that I would have to take would weight down the back of my car. LOL! Hoping that I missed a store here locally. Happy myLotting!!!

hi, i am with you. i hate to throw books away but hopefully here are some ideas... you could freecycle them, you could take them to your local thrift store, dont rule out the library (even though they may have not wanted these books.)

Hi Thank you for commenting. Thanks for the ideas. I am trying everything possible to get them a new home. Being that some of these books are what some call outdated...my friend's grandparents read them...it's hard. But I will not throw books away. I've even thought about having a garage sale and getting rid of other stuff too. :) Happy myLotting!!!

In my home country second hand book shops take books that are in good condition. Some people sell their unwanted books on Internet sites like Amazon. I know charity shops are grateful for books they could sell. It can be challenging to throw out books so it helps if they will go to good homes. Good luck with your clutter clearing of the books you no longer need.

Hi, You must be having too many books and thats why you are planning to get rid of them. I too keep buying books and collecting them, but so far have never thought of getting rid of any books. there is a lot of demand for second hand books , so why don't you try some of those shops that sell old books, you can make some money out of your books, also try ebay - I have seen many people selling old books and magazines on ebay - all the best

Good morning to you LeavaoDe, all I can advise is don't do it, don't do it. I bitterly regret parting with heaps of books when I moved countries, I didn't think there would be room in the new house to bring them all over so disposed of many to charity shops and friends. Unbelievably the second hand bookshops which still existed just weren't interested apart from one guy who took a few as he must have recognized that a leather bound Smollet book was probably worth something. You won't believe how many times I've gone to the bookshelves now in search of something to realize I don't have it anymore and kick myself in frustration, how could I really have believed that at some time in the future i wouldn't want them again.

Hi. Thank you for commenting. That's one of my problems I have done that before and didn't like it one bit. For me the books that need to go are the books that I don't frequently read which include books that were read and given to me by family or friends, free books, books that I don't read but somehow found it's way onto my bookshelves (via family and friends) LOL, things like that. My plan is to keep books by authors that I love to read and get rid of the rest. :) I don't want to part with books of any sort but I must or I can't get anymore. Happy myLotting!!!

I also buy books a lot. I buy several books a week. When I feel that I already have too much books, I usually give them away to family and friends. If they don't want the books I gave them, they return it to me. I then donate them to any random charity. You can also try selling these books on Ebay or some other online site for selling things.

I actually "get rid" of my books by lending them to other people; I'm the type to freely share my readings without expecting that they'll come back. I also do book exchanges with my friends: after I finish a book, I'd call up a friend to swap a book with which make everyone happier in the process. You could also try joining BookCrossing [http://www.bookcrossing.com/], it has an interesting way of taking your books off your hands.

Luckily for you, there are all sorts of options on what to do with your unwanted books. In my town, there is a used bookstore that will buy books from customers. You might want to check to see if there are any in your area. Or you could sell them on eBay! If you aren't interested in the hassle of selling, you could always try contacting local school libraries to see if they are interested in book donations. I remember my old school's library was in desperate need of more books, but there was no room in the budget to buy any. I'm sure that with recent budget cuts, school librarians would be thrilled with donations! Then there is always Goodwill or the Salvation Army. The money made off of these donations go to charity and you can write off large donations on your taxes next year! Good luck with sorting out your library!

I do four things with my unwanted books, and I am an avid reader so I am always collecting and getting rid of books. First option is a used book store, this way you get some money back and keep the books in circulation. Second, donate them to any of the numerous charity's that are around. Third, because I live downtown, I just sit outside with a pile of books and a sign that says free books. People usually grab them up pretty quick. Fourth, if absolutely no one wants the book or it's too old and ratty to try and give to someone or sell I recycle it. Never throw them in the trash!

Assuming that I don't have any friends that want my old books, I usually try the used bookstore first. Libraries tend to order new books and old ones that people donate are resold in the library's used book store (where old things that don't sell get thrown away) or thrown out immediately. So, I sell what I can to the used bookstore. What doesn't sell there I try to sell on ebay. If it doesn't sell there, I just donate it to the salvation army.
