What does Religion and God mean to you??

Religion and God - The symbols of different religions in the world..

People have different perceptions about Religion and God . Some feel that it is whole way of life. Religion influences everything in their life including the way they dress and eat. Their relationships and now even the legalities. But at a personal level what exactly does Religion have to do with your life? how much of an influence does it have on your life? Personally speaking, though I am not too bothered about God or Religion, I really cannot help certain influences becoming part of my life. Like lighting incence sticks which I do, because I like the fresh fragrance, but it is a religious practice to do so, and it makes my mother very happy to see me do things like that Celebrating festivals is another practice which you do automatically, because everyone around you is doing so...And your family would feel left out without any celebration, and, after all why not have some festivity in your otherwise drab life? So how about you all, what does religion mean to you and how far does it influence your life?

Hi Kiran! Religion, I believe, is something which is practiced by us. We follow the religion as we find our parents and ancestors following it. It is in a way inherited by us. I think to follow the religious beliefs e.g. going for prayers to a temple or watering shivlingam is matter of personal faith and choice. Those who want to practice it may be allowed to do so (even if they are our family members) and those who do not want to follow it, may not be forced on this issue. There are many who consider them theists and they do believe in existence of God. However, if one is atheist, s/he should not be mocked upon and ridiculed. Existence of God has always been a matter of controversy and this issue is related to 'faith'. I believe in the existence of God and I feel that whatever I am or I've gained in my life is because of HIM.

Hi Kiran! Yes, we need something either our own self or faith or God to fall back upon. This way we easily gather courage and strength.

Hi deepak, Thanks for your views. As you rightly say many customs and rituals are passed on to us by our elders, and we take pleasure in carrying on the tradition, sometimes without analysing it. But what matters is the faith which gives us inner strength. May be for a believer it is God, but for a non believer it is something else, may be faith in himself...either way we need something to fall back on or to derive strength from..happy mylotting

Yes deepak, I agree and thats how we become gullible. Some people are too trusting where God and Religion are concerned, and the God men are only too happy to take them for a ride

I firmly believe that religion is a necessary factor of one's life.God , strictly speaking , is an abstract concept and we cannot comprehend it totally. To me God represents an unseen Omnipotent force who will guide me and protect me through my life. All these practices of lightng a lamp or following certain rueles and regulations or saying prayers are devised to inculcate some discipline in a household. Faith is instilled when young and when the child cannot understand any abstract concepts. We as adults cannot comprehend this. As such , it becomes easier to identify with stories propounded by our religion .Basically, religion teaches us to be peaceful and gives stability to the mind. Because we are imperfect ,w e have to resort to some sort of practice and this is best done with religion. So, religion tries to render some concrete form to the abstract concept of God by teaching us all this through religious books.

Moreover, as you rightly pointed out festivals are made to add colour to our life. When it is associated with religion and some stories are given it lends greater charm to the concept. For example, when we celebrate the birthday of LordKrishna it is so heartening to decorate the house with tiny cherubic steps symbolisng the birth of Lord Krishna and His visit to all our places leaving an imprint of tiny beautiful feet.Similarly, there are other festivals that are associated with triumph of good over evil[Diwali], thanksgiving to Nature[Shankranti], etc etc..,All this fills me with a speical joy and thanksgiving.

Thanks a lot for kala for all your views . I do agree with you when you say that religion is needed to bring in discipline and peace in one's life. that was the whole purpose with which it took its birth in the early years ...God and religion are interlinked , n doubt about that. But as you say one can be religious and practice religion without being fanatic about it. As for the festivities, they are all colorful and gay in all religions. We visit our friends who are christians to celebrate Xmas and my children love it..the same with id..all the best and take care

For God, I guess its more about FAITH... Faith that if we do good we'll be better.. Faith that we will be protected from the WRONG.. The simple concept of Faith, drives us to different religions.. different gods.. it doesn't matter what religion we belong to or what god we believe in.. its the Faith that matters.. (and i am talking about the Good faith.. for those who try to read between the lines.. i am not talking about people who have Faith for their wrong intentions) For Religion, I totally hate those various castes which exists inside a religion itself. And i get much angry, when same religious peoples talk bad about each others castes that we are high caste and they are low caste. Religion to me is an utter waste if it is just about blindly believing in something without being able to question. if religion hampers free thinking, then it is utter rubbish religions are not god sent. they are all man-made. the difference being that some were made to dominate and control, and these are more political than spiritual in nature. others were made as a means to achieve harmony with the entire surrounding environment. but there is no one true religion, other than the manav dharma, humanity. respect for life and for all living beings. the other parts of religion such as festivals, rituals, art and music are more cultural, but are also important, because they bring joy to people from all walks of life. but they should never take precedence over the manav dharma. Even if there was no religion, I would have been the same person, doing the same whatever I do now, helping others, still being Honest and having the Responsibilities with me. Have a nice time!

Religion means rules and traditions which I believe has nothing to do with what is in the bible and what God has wanted for us. I believe in God and I have faith like no other. I have such a strong faith that I don't care if the governemnt in the United States takes our rights to free speach and free religion by passing a hate crime bill, I will continue to say and do what I believe. If they want to lock me up or fine me for that they can go for it. See I believe that all one needs is Faith and nothing more and nothing less. Faith is a strong tool and can get someone through anything and everything, not the holy water, not the pritty dresses, not the churches, not the pastors, prests, and so on. I am a born filled Christain and so I live by Faith not rules and traditions ran by religions.

Hi, friend. I presonally believe in God only. I believe that there is only one God of which we all are children. God is the one omnicient, omnipotent and omnipresent. Also, i do not believe in religions. I believe that religion is another name given to faith in God and the obligation to practice what the God has said to be righteousness. Since, people have made their own gods, they practice diffrent religions. But, if God is one as i believe, the faith should also be the one and thus there is only one religion in this world. Happy Mylotting!!

Well, yeah. There is a way and that is the greatest commandment i.e. love. If you can love others as yourself, all other goodness automatically flows into your deeds and move towards becoming what we call as GOOD. In right sense, good is God and God is good. So, once you become good, God is inside you, you can percieve him, you can listen to what he says, in short you can reach out ot God. So, Love (without selfishness, that is true and pure love) for everyone (even your enemies) is the path to reach out to God. But, mind you, this is considered the most difficult path. But, I am sure it is achievable. Happy Mylotting!!

Hi kiran, I don't think of myself as religious anymore but as spiritual. Rituals mean nothing to me really, neither does attending church. To me life is prayer and there is no need to have a special time for such things. If everyone followed the golden rule, "Treat others the way you want to be treated", there would be no need for anymore religion. Blessings.

Religion is man-made, God is forever I live my life like God is right there beside me and trust that he will steer me the way i need to go in this humanely existence until Im reading to advance on to eternity, if anything my religion is this experience here on Earth which helps me to develop the faith I need to advance from this universe and trust in 'things not seen' but that's becoming easier and easier as God who created this earth has an ironic simplicity about him and reassures me that he wants everything for my salvation from this challenging journey, he's did it.

God means a lot to me I have a great belief in God and a great amount of gratitude. Religion however is a seperate issue. I am not totally against religion, but I think it has gotten out of hand and is now more of a business than anything else. I think it is wonderful to pray and worship with others but when it becomes more important to church's to profit then to serve the people I think it is wrong. I also don't like the ways many churches change the rules and beliefs to suit them.

Religion and God is great part of my life. I observe religious activities such as reading the Bible regularly if not on a daily basis, praying several times a day, attending worship services, attending cellgroup meetings and leading home Bible study. For me these activities are not tiring for me but have been a source of my joys. I am happy to have a constant fellowship with God through prayers and Bible meditation. They take away my stress and anxieties brought by the difficulties in my daily life.

Hi Kiran, My daily life and my social interaction is my religion and men I serve in my capacity are my Gods and also the other creatures. Please do not take this faith of mine as demeaning. I am neither a Hindu, nor a Christian, nor a Muslim, nor a Jew, nor a Jain but a compromise. I never seem God at the Temple. If at all HE is there he can not be luxurious to stay at the Birla Temple in Delhi like our politicians. Nor he would choose to go to kailash or Qaba. Thanks....

Hi krajibg, Thanks a lot for your response I never ever take any one's faith as demeaning, esp not when someone is having such practical ideas about religion and god.If all of us start thinking more about our immediate surroundings and give less importance to things that we don't see life would be much more peaceful- But each one to his own , all the best and happy mylotting

My religion is not that stable, i was born a Catholic but my beliefs are those with the Christians'. Their teachings for me, has a lot of impact. The way each Christian talk with the other. The way they learn the Bible, they interact with each other. It amazes me every time i get to understand a specific chapter of the magical book. In a Catholic's way, a certain priest will just sermon, and lucky for you if your questions are answered. No offense to Catholics. I respect all religions, i just have a different perspective. God bless to all!Ü

First of all religion in itself, can be a wide variety. To say one is religious opens a wide door. However, to say that you believe in God, that is a very powerful statement, since there is only one God. As far a lighting fragrances, i suppose its ok, i mean God does enjoy good smells, the Bible gives us that information. Some celebrations are not Godly celebrations, and have many origins in them that are not of God, so it's important to know what you are celebrating to start with.

Hi Shirley, i agree that God and Religion do connect in some ways and do not...I am a Hindu, and I believe that Hinduism is more a way of life with its customs and traditions and festivals most of which like Deepavali and Holi are fun filled festivals. I generally do what I want to do without really giving any importance to the religious part of it..all the best

Hi zed, Thanks a lot for your response . I think Religion has its way of bonding people and families together. I see many Muslims giving meat, money, fruits and sweets to poor people so that they too have some happiness during Id and other festivals. Christianity is known for its charitable work and I see many poor people being served a good meal on Xmas day at our local church. In many Hindu temples there are free meals served to poor devotees every day..This is the best thing about every religion...Have a great day zed

recently, I've been leaning more twoards atheism than anything else. For 16 years of my life, I was a typical God fearing christian. However, recently I have found that I need God less and less, but rather I rely on my own power to get things done, rather than just praying for it. Thats not to say that I have some grudge against religions, I think that the way that they promote peace and charity in some cases is very beneficial for our society, even if I dont believe in all the religious voodoo that they preach

Religion is a common aspect in life, although when I'm away from the Internet I try to avoid discussions about it.. I don't believe in God, and I refer to myself as an Atheist. My family is filled with Christians, and I respect this, even though they have no idea how I feel about the religion. From what I've seen, people have fought over religion in the past, present, future, just for what they believe. My parents rarely go to church. Perhaps once every two years, but it's obvious they still feel strongly about their beliefs. Before dinner, my family usually prays and gives a blessing. Due to the fact I like to debate, or mostly read them, I have a tendency to feel religion plays a strong part in my life. As I'm constantly thinking about what is fact and fiction. What's right or wrong. How things came into existence. I respect everyone's way of life and what they believe in until they start becoming rude and stuck up about it. Overall, religion effects my life quite a bit mentally.
