The Great Power in "Little Things"

Yesterday I was in a bad mood, and I went outside wiht a black cloud over my head to get some air, my head filled with dark thougts, when my glance happened to pause at something on the grass. I saw a gorgeous black butterfly with iridescent blue trim and delicate white spots. AS I watched it sunning it's wings, my mood lifted and I forgot all about whatever it was that had made me cranky. The whole day got better and the world seemed brighter and prettier. Today I sw a yellow butterfly wtih black trim on its wings flitting around the flowers in my yard, despite the overcast gray day we're having here, I had sunshine in my heart at that sight. The "little" things in life can do wonderful things with us if we allow ourselves to enjoy them, whether it's the sight of a butterfly or pretty bird or maybe a lovely flower that has sprung up in some unexpected place, they are precious gifts that we should cherish, even if only for a moment. Are there any "little things" among life's surprises that help you to forget your troubles when you stumble across them?

hi angrykitty oh yes I have had something similar happen'to mne back when we stillhad an apartment.I was in a down' really black mood because my son was having problems'at' work as he really didnt like the person he worked under. as a mom I cared about my son and was sitting on the'wall waiting for the access bus to come pick me up for a visit'to my doctor. I had shingles. anyway the wind was gusting, and'I saw this tiny ruby throated hummingbird trying to get tothe'hawthorn' blooms on the bushes behind me. she finally got out of the'wind' gust and very leery of me she sipped nectar from the blooms,'her tiny wings beating so fast it was unbelievable. then in a few minutes she flew off.but then the sun came out, the wind settled and ijust'realized I wasnt hurting, and I was smiling. a tiny humming bird 'fighting the gust of wind,so I could make out great myself.

Thank you also for waking this thread back up, I'm having a bad day and REALLY needed to see something that would make me smile and remind me of those wonderful little blessings in life. Hummingbirds are such gorgeous and amazing little creatures!

LOL! {{Angrykitty}} you and I are so much alike ( mood wise) I too have had the same black dark clouds hanging over my head too this week; Mad as hell one minute, sad and in near tears the next; its been a roller coaster ride from hell is it a FULL MOON WEEK or something?? I don't have a calendar that tells me that but I would almost bet it is huh? When I go out to water my flowers each day I usually see a few butterfly's they always make me smile too, or the beautiful cardinals here; I always say out loud when I see them, Thanks Mom, I know you are sending them to me; When she was alive she too loved loved loved the beautiful cardinals and butterfly's; So yeah seeing those and my hummingbirds always do lift my spirits. They are indeed precious gifts to us;

I can be in a bad mood and start seeing those little hummingbirds flying here and there and making the little noises they make especially when they are going after another hummingbird that is on their turf. They are so tiny and beautiful. They buzz right by you or will get pretty close to you and just kind of hang there looking at you then they take off again. I especially like the red throated ones.

Things like that do help, because when you notice those "little things" you realize that your problems are so much smaller than that. When I go outside to lay on the hammock and feel a nice breeze where the trees wave back and forth I notice the beauty in that and I drift away from my problems. Everything else in life is so much bigger than the problems that may haunt you day to day, you just have to remember that and soldier on.

Oh I so agree with you on that. I can get so upset but has soon as I step outside my backyard I will have a smile on my face in minutes. We have beautiful butterflies flying around plus hummingbirds, roadrunner and rabbits. So for me just to sit outside in my yard I'm alway finding myself smiling at the wonder of nature and its beautiful animals. I will sit there for awhile watching what they are doing. In fact the other day I found a rabbit drinking water from a dish that I have out there for the birds. It was so cute to see.

I actually live in a very troubled season right now. I also have found those "bright spots" like butterflies or flowers. It does somehow brighten the day to have that little connect with nature!

that's an awesome story kitty! And I definitely agree that a butterfly or a flower should make us see how beautiful life can be. Everyone on this earth has problems and negative things going on but sometimes I just have to look outside at the beautiful things God gave us to see and it cheers me up too. Life can be over in less than a second so we need to appreciate what we have to enjoy it more.

THanks for the reply, I totally agree with you; life is too short, we'd better enjoy the wonders it shows us while we can!

i experienced that feeling too. it seemed as though all the problems have been stuck on me and there was no way out of all the mess. i was too engrossed in what i was feeling that i didnt notice my young boy, age 3 sitting beside me. i then knew he was there when i heard him singing twinkle, twinkle little star... i turned towards him and saw his angelic smile, that little thing he did for me was all that i could bear. i hugged him tight, thanking him for for the greatest thing he did for me that day. all the bad feeling were set aside from then on. my boy taught me to smile everyday, even through the heaviest of rain, and the gloomiest of day.

black and blue butterfly - A close up of the butterfly that adopted my girls last summer.
Butterflies follow my daughters everywhere. They land in my oldest girls flip flops when we are out at the lake swimming. I tell her its because they like stinky feet. And they also chase my avatar. So butterflies can't help but bring a smile to my face. I'm including a picture of our pet butterfly from last summer. Wild flowers, and fluffy white clouds in weird shapes force smiles out of me no matter how bad my mood is too. But above everything else a smile, kiss, or giggle from my kids will turn my mood around so fast I even forget what my issue was to start with. Kids are great!

You are so right. So many of us,go about our day to day lives without thinking about the beauty around us.I love to see the rain fall, and smell the air after a rain.My daughter and son in law live on an orchard, and they depend on the rain.So we do not take it for granted.

My daughter used to get irritated with me, stopping on walks to look at the minutest, yet most perfect flower, and marvel at the creatures that "keep the coggs turning". Mother nature is wonderful, and it makes me happy that there are still people like you to appreciate. Never stop....and pass it on. You already doing a good job!

Yes and one of them is my daughter. She is 7 months old. Every time I feel upset or not in those good moods, a smile from her will ease all the negative thoughts and feelings that I have.

There’s a bird nest Marianne right across my balcony on a tree…though not ‘small’ I believe its one of the many things that help me maintain my sanity and keep my feet firmly on the ground. First thing I note is the amazing nest building skills that birds have…no matter the intensity of the storm or rain, the nest is there, safely ensconced between two sturdy branches…every morning when I start my day with a sinking feeling of boredom yet when I see the birds flying in and out and so busy just to feed the chicks…it somehow balances out the negative thoughts in my mind…gives a new purpose to my day that yes, I might be doing the same old thing over and over again but at the end of it all, there is definitely a purpose, a scheme to it all…my efforts are not in vain. If I may paraphrase one of Tagore’s thoughts here…I’ve gone to see lofty mountains and vast oceans but I could not ever step out of my house and appreciate the beauty of a glistening dewdrop on a blade of grass….yes, Marianne, it’s the small things around us that matter if only we open our eyes to them.

American Black Swallowtail - image of an American Black Swallowtail
Being a nature lover, I'm always in awe in seeing butterflies, beautiful flowers. Where I live there really isn't too much "nature"--so seeing things like this in a city environment makes it all the more special...just down the block is a small patch of earth belonging to this apt building...right now there are a whole array of flowers growing...cosmos, black-eyed susans, sunflowers...and once in awhile, I'll notice a butterfly fluttering about--and yes, it cheers me up Hope this cheers you up even more...its a photo I took sometime ago of an American Black Swallowtail that I "rescued"--uh, yes, I actually took it home--it's one wing was kind of busted and couldn't fly..so rather than leave it to some horrible fate I took it home and took care of it until it decided to go to butterfly heaven
