Why Is It So Hard To Get A Little Support, Sometimes?

i've mentioned on here in the past about the road construction in my hometown, and how it's paralysed the bus system in my area of town. They've moved the bus stop a good 4 blocks up the street, and that's too far for me to walk. I moved into this apartment specifically because of the bus stop. I got a bright idea, and that was to borrow a wheelchair from a relative (the wheelchair belonged to a deceased relative, and I thought that this person's son might still have it!) and use that to transport myself to the bus stop. The busses in town are almost all wheelchair accessible. So I call my mother, and ask her if she knows if this relative still has the chair, and what his cellphone number is, since he's a hard guy to catch at home. Do you think she likes the idea? Nope, not a bit! First off, she's worried I'll roll down the walkway hill, right into traffic. Oh yeah? Surely she knows me well enough to know that I will WALK DOWN the little hill, and get into the chair on the lower level of the sidewalk. As for the smaller hills going up and down the street to and from the bus stop, yeah, hard work indeed, but inpossible. If there is one thing I know how to do, it's control a wheelchair. At first my husband had his doubts too, until I reminded him that the chair I would be getting would have full-sized wheels that I could control myself, and my city has decent sidewalks. The last time I used a chair was in AZ, on bad roads during construction season, and it only had little tiny wheels, and he had topush me. The hills were a lot steeper too. My husband is the most reasonable person I know, and it only took that little bit of calmly explained logic to get my point across, and he loved the idea. I decided to forgo calling this relative, forgo talking to the family alltogether about this issue, and get a chair elsewhere. I called the local Red Cross, and they hd one for me to use till the busses get back on track. I went out yesterday with the chair, put my plan into action (Hubby went with me to see me do it!) and it was a complete SUCCESS!! I am not one to open my mouth about something, unless I know it is going to work. Anyone else have this problem, that they put an idea out there, and people who never have, and may never need to be in that position just don't get it? My step-daughter was in a near fatal car accident, and does not have the option to stand up and walk for a few minutes when the hills get too steep for comfort. If she can do it, why the hell can't I? And I DID!!!!!!! :)

Amen to that. I am always looking out for what is best for me and my family and others also. I hate it when I see a clear picture of something but no one else seems to realise it or care to make an effort and try it out when I know what works and what doesn't.

I'm glad you got yourself a chair and can get around to where you need to be! I hope they get the road construction finished so you can get back to normal again! Any idea how long they'll be working on the streets?

I am glad your very calm reasonable husband listened to you and you have found a way to deal with the the moved bus stop. I know you could not have kept on paying cab fare for the duration of the construction. That is too unpredictable. Some road work seems to go on forever and a day.

That's great that you were able to get something to help you around town. It must be difficult not driving. I always think through my ideas before I throw them out to others to listen to. I hope that your new ride works out for you.
