Why do people eat chicken hearts and gizzards?

I think eating chicken hearts and gizzards are to extreme. It is clearly gross. Your eating a internal organ and heart for gosh sakes. I wouldn't want someone eating my heart when I die or my liver. I can't even imagine intestines. The thought of eating a heart makes me want to gag! Some people like it but I just find it so inhumane and gross. People will eat anything. I mean some people eat head cheese. That is another thing wouldn't touch if someone paid me. I believe some parts of animals should not even be concidered eating no matter how good or gross they taste.

I don't eat chicken hearts. I have never tried them either. I have tried gizards before though, when my mom bought them. I do not like them either and they are very chewy. She buys chicken livers also. They have such a dry, nasty taste also.

It only goes to show you how rich and spoiled we Americans are. There are people in the world who would get down on their knees and thank Almighty God for such a meal. There may come a day that you join them. Thank God for living in the land of pleanty and waste not, especially what you kill to eat, for this is the greatest sin.

I agree with you that it is very gross to eat those body parts. I would never eat them either. I think that it all started because there was not enough food for everyone so they had no other choice but to eat those gross internal organs, etc. Then the recipes or ways to cook it were passed down through the generations to the point that it is now a way of life or tradition in some cultures. Personally, if that is the only meat available then I would just rather eat a salad. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

I just find it so inhumane... Of course that's inhumane! Chickens are animals. You forgot? I wouldn't want someone eating my heart when I die or my liver. I love chicken hearts and gizzards (and yes, I do eat chicken intestines from time to time) but even if you give yourself for free, I will never eat your heart or liver and neither your meat nor any part of your body or of any one else. Because I am human but not a cannibal.

My husbands niece like to eat chicken's heart. Whenever my mom in law would prepare chicken curry, she would look for the heart part and that's her favorite. About the other internal organs of chicken, hhmm i guess in my own country they like it a lot. You can find it particularly in the street where vendors sell grilled intestines of chicken. We call it "inihaw" or grilled. These barbeque is somewhat tasty, no offense. But if that is taboo to you, i respect that. All people have different tastes. They say that even a frog tastes better than chicken, just like my hubby who was able to eat rice field frog and he said it tasted even better than chicken. Many of us have our own versions of food that we don't like. Some exotic foods that for others are taboo, to some, they are just normal food. Happy Mylotting.

Hello from the Philippines. I like to eat exotic food and this was being influenced by the Chinese. I like to eat the chicken heart, liver and gizzard as its one of my favorites but I seldom eat it as its expensive. I also have eat Iguana, it taste like chicken meat. Deer meat is so tender and really good. Even though I like exotic foods, I don't want to eat bugs or insects and worms - a big no-no for me. I would rather eat Balut (fertilized duck egg).

We, as omnivores, eat both veggies and meat, correct? Actually, the organs of animals are highly nutritious. Our ancestors hunted animals and coveted the organs, realizing that they were the most important part of the animal. In many Native American tribes, the tribe member that killed the beast got to cut out and eat its heart while it was fresh. Either that, or it was taken to the tribe chief, who got his first cut of what he wanted, which was typically organ meats. Wolves, who are also mammals like us, will only eat the most nutritious parts of their kills during times of plenty. Bears will only eat the heads (which contain the brain) and eggs of salmon when there are plenty to go around. Organ meats are very, very good for you. Liver of ungulates, such as cow, sheep, goat, etc., are perhaps the best source of iron on the planet for us. You can get many natural vitamins and nutrients from eating brains, spleen, heart, liver, tripe... It may sound gross, but it is the way of our ancestors. We have simply been removed from our ancestry by the advances in our technology, and by what we have been taught. Apparently, in order to be "civilized" you shouldn't eat these things. This is a ridiculous notion, because it is what we were designed to eat. It is in our heritage. The U.S. is perhaps the unhealthiest country in the world. And we are the ones who turn our noses up at wholesome, nutritious foods in lieu of McDonalds, Burger King, or Taco Cabana. There are many other countries that not only don't have a problem eating the organs of animals, but they look forward to the nutrition that those organs provide. It is your choice whether or not to eat it yourself. But keep in mind that it goes beyond just being "gross." One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I am sure it all started with not wanting any part of the animal to go to waste. Back when you coudln't just go to the store and purchase a package of whatever chicken parts you wanted, you had to actually kill your own chickens and make use of them. When times were tough you had to do what you had to do to get by, and if that meant getting a little extra protein into your diet bye eating the organ meat of animals, that is what you did. Aside from that, these particular pieces of meat are generally packed full of lots of vitamins and minerals and other substances that are good for your body. Very nutritious, even though they might not sound very appetizing.

well i want to tell you my friend that I used to always use hearts and gizzards in the gravy, especially the Thanksgiving turkey. I am a little more carefull now as I had one person become somewhat emotional when he found out they were there. (He was the same guy who only ate canned veggies .. I never met his mother, but I did wonder.) There are recipies in Russian cookbooks for piroshki filled with hearts and gizzards. I have never had a chance to try them, but they sound good.

yes it is extreme and gross. But if there is nothing to eat except chicken hearts, if i don't eat them, i will die, maybe i will eat. After all life is much more important than anything else. Some anthropologists found that in the ancient time, in order to survive, human ate human too, i believe this behavior cannt be regarded as cruel, it is necessary for human kind.
